While I agree, the point isn't about one being better than the other, it was that there was a paradigm shift in how FF dealt with exploration that remained consistent for two console generations.

The trend had already been well underway before FFX. For Squaresoft you can look at Chrono Trigger which minimized it's importance. A series like Breath of Fire went from standard in 1 and 2 (SNES), to something a little more like Chrono Trigger in 3, then finally in 4 (still on the PS1) they did away with it all together in favour of a standard point & click map

Furthermore, I'd think some allowance should be given to X as it was the first iteration on a new console generation. FFXVII-IX while they used 3d models should be considered more 2.5D games. X was the first FF to come in full 3D, with animated character models and full voice acting. Like how the 3D models were really really ****** in FFVII, I personally consider the loss of exploration in FFX to be the 'tech up' trade off. And unlike FFXII, both VII and X were released in a very timely manner.

Hell even Ocarina of Time did something very similar. 'Hyrule Field' went from being a large map you could explore to a largely empty circular field you crossed over to get from one place to the next.

It's okay for XIII, that game was no good IMO.

You gotta try one more time for XII, wait for the HD Remake if you do.

I will do that. I got further in to XII than I did XIII. After seeing how well the FFX remake was done I am confident that I could get through the XII remake. Balthier was my favorite character in FFT: WOTL and Basch is my favorite char in Final Fantasy Record Keeper so I am hoping for different results this time. :)

As much as I liked Oblivion and Skyrim, I absolutely loathed Morrowind. I got that game back in 2005 and I still can't bring myself to play it again. I should probably mod the **** out of it like I did Oblivion to make it playable.

Everquest 2 was a far superior game to WoW.

The poor graphic engine that required a high end PC to play it was it's downfall but if you had the PC it was the better MMO.

You could replace Dagoth Ur with Thomas the Tank Engine like was famously done with the dragon from Skyrim :D

For my money, FFXII has the best story in the series besides VI and VII. It's just the game had such an unexpectedly crap battle system, confusing character management, ugly and distracting graphics and colours, and a godawful soundtrack. I will absolutely buy the HD remake, and hope that they've fixed some of these things - which prevent it from taking it's place high upon the FF pantheon.

Anyway, I don't know how unpopular this is, but EA hasn't made a good NHL game in the better part of a decade. The best sports gaming franchise going right now is MLB The Show, and it's not even AINEC.

ESports aren't sports, and moreover, are absolutely toxic for the kids who pursue glory in them as a career goal or 'profession'. Like, potentially life-ruining.

Oh and, I liked Mass Effect 3's ending. Not the 'which flavour of galactic smoothie' bit, but the concept of the ending. It was earned.

I feel a very large percentage of gamers lie to themselves about using guides or playing games blind.

I've seen numerous people claim to have played dark souls blind, and then when pressed about a particular spot admit they referenced a guide. The amount of times I've seen a person fess up to this makes me question if its even possible to beat these games without a guide or notes.

I'm going to have to disagree on both fronts. One series having less to explore around, doesn't negate the other series who emphasized exploration, so you can't really use that as a trend to pinpoint where exactly that exploration took a turn for the worse. Final Fantasy still had quite a decent amount of exploration within the same generation as Chrono Trigger. Same applies to Breath of Fire III and IV, which was in the PS1 era and filled with other JRPGs that had different approaches to exploration. Not to mention, the many different developer philosophies behind the games.

I would accept OOT as an example, but the problem with using OOT in the same context is that later games such as Twilight Princess repeated the same problems where Hyrule Field was even bigger, but it was devoid of anything interesting for the player to do. So the player is just wasting time travelling around in a boring space. At least in games like Majora's Mask and Wind Waker (to an extent), you have enough variety in an area that you're motivated to explore more simply because you have no idea what is coming up.

WoW is trash. The most fun I ever had in it was making a Paladin named "Ernest P. Worrell", then running around only attacking trolls while yelling lines from the movie

Somewhere, there are people with low opinions of WoW because, in their experience, it was just filled with trolls with joke names running around killing people while quoting movie lines ;).

Here's an unpopular opinion: WoW is a great game. It's just popular to hate on what's popular after it no longer appeals to you, and the open-ended and subscription natures of WoW mean that most people play it well past the point at which they should've stopped. By the time that they cancel, they're bitter towards the game and that informs their opinion of the game forever, rather than the time that they enjoyed in the game.

chrono trigger absolutely blows final fantasy oit of the water

xbox one is a literal piece of **** (not sure how unpopular this is)

earthbound is massively overrated. it pandered to hipsters before hipsters existed (or at least were recognized as a group). the fact that it goes for 200$ (when its not even that rare!!!! is nuts)

indiana jones and the infernal machine (does anyone even know about this game) > tomb raider
