It's a wolf v2.0
While I agree, the point isn't about one being better than the other, it was that there was a paradigm shift in how FF dealt with exploration that remained consistent for two console generations.
The trend had already been well underway before FFX. For Squaresoft you can look at Chrono Trigger which minimized it's importance. A series like Breath of Fire went from standard in 1 and 2 (SNES), to something a little more like Chrono Trigger in 3, then finally in 4 (still on the PS1) they did away with it all together in favour of a standard point & click map
Furthermore, I'd think some allowance should be given to X as it was the first iteration on a new console generation. FFXVII-IX while they used 3d models should be considered more 2.5D games. X was the first FF to come in full 3D, with animated character models and full voice acting. Like how the 3D models were really really ****** in FFVII, I personally consider the loss of exploration in FFX to be the 'tech up' trade off. And unlike FFXII, both VII and X were released in a very timely manner.
Hell even Ocarina of Time did something very similar. 'Hyrule Field' went from being a large map you could explore to a largely empty circular field you crossed over to get from one place to the next.
