Jimmy Murphy‏Verified account @MurphysLaw74

Just got a text from an NHL exec after my #WillButcher tweets: "#Habs are more than a wild card!"

This was in the Weber thread and not here for some reason. Looks like we have a legit chance to land him. Would be a fantastic pickup

Murphy is a tool and a Habs troll. I don't see the Habs being in on him as a wild guess, but also don't think he's anything special. The only good part is that he's a free asset but wouldn't be a big deal if they signed him.

So at 21 he enrolls to university and decides to play for them? I'm guessing he didn't get any offers from NHL or AHL teams.

I know he was invited to a dev camp this summer ( Winnipeg's I believe) but I guess the interest wasn't there for a contract. No other team must have felt strong enough about him to give him either an ELC or an AHL-ECHL deal right off the bat. That or he really wanted to go to school . Canadian college isn't the worst place to wait for a better opportunity, there's been a few players that came out of there to the NHL in the past.

Maybe his is but it would make sense for him to sign here. We're weak on the left side, strong on the right and have cap space for when his ELC expires. I don't see why we wouldn't be in on him.

Butcher holds the big end of the bargaining stick and if I had to guess, he'll get a team to agree to have him in the NHL in his first season.

If we're serious about signing him, as we should be given our depth on LD, then I don't think you can start talking about developing him in the AHL for a little while before bringing him up.

He isn't any better than Alzner/Schlemko/Davidson , at least from what I've seen. I can agree though there is no harm in having medium/high potential LD on a cheap contract.

We should sign him because it's never bad to get prospects for free essentially. However I doubt he signs here if he wants to start in the NHL or be a first call up.

He is making a wise decision. Odds are extremely low for him making the NHL and he now gets a good education. The odd CIAU player still gets tryouts for NHL teams so if he dominates he will get a second look.

Yeah it's not quite the black hole it might seem to be career wise, there's been a few players here and there that managed to get an NHL deal out of it. Darche, Ward, etc. You never know.

Plus, he is probably using his CHL scholarship. If he signed an ELC and didn't make the NHL, I believe that scholarship would have expired before the end of his contract, leaving him with no big money career and no education. For a player on the bubble of being a pro, this is a wise decision indeed. He can still try to carve out a minor pro career after he gets a degree.

I like this. It's being reported Butcher isn't looking for a guaranteed NHL spot. It can let some hope he signs with Montreal live.
