Seriously? Couldn't come up with any other name? I wouldn't wish that upon my worse enemy, not even UNB... "thanks for coming out. We've hired Bob Mongrain". ...

It is B.E.S.T. - Better Every Single Time. He breathes the continuous improvement model in his coaching, and expects his players to buy in. Coast during a game, even a blowout, and you will hear about it. He is a workaholic ... no one can keep up with him. And yes, he is extremely competitive and wants to win at everything. Everything. He has some interesting approaches to motivating and having guys buy in for starters, he creates games within the game (ex: we will win the last 10 minutes of every game for the next 2 months) to keep players motivated, he's a quirky dude and I've seen him bag skate the team and yell through an entire practice after a blowout win over Dal 4-5 years ago.He definitely keeps guys on their toes and despite the Ned Flanders look , he is one intense S.O.B who is obsessed with winning. It obviously runs much deeper than this, I'd love to read a book some day on some of his coaching philosophy. He's a good guy though and when the group is bought in, players love playing for him.
I saw him bench a dude for 25 minutes after a bad penalty. hopefully it works out in SJ, but there might be a few guys who wont like his style. It is B.E.S.T. - Better Every Single Time. I'm guessing some of those kids in Saint John are in for a wake-up call. And they'll probably be better for it.
Bit of a surprising late departure, James Phelan signs in the ECHL.
Pretty sure he finished his degree and studies...CEGEP...had a head start when he came to UNB.Bit of a surprising late departure, James Phelan signs in the ECHL.
Will miss his grit and willingness to go to the net. His point production tapered off in the playoffs (well, to be fair that was the case for the whole team). Take the optimistic view - creates another opening for Gardiner to fill, and he's getting a ton of good PR from the Memorial Cup.Bit of a surprising late departure, James Phelan signs in the ECHL.
I found he was never quite the same after suffering that injury against SMU.Will miss his grit and willingness to go to the net. No doubt, but you can see the UNB footprint all over the way the Sea Dogs are playing in the tournament for sure at both ends of the ice! Pretty amazing to take a team with less than 6 weeks and get them to this position to play for the cup!Tweet from TSN Darren Dreger:
Gardiner MacDougall is a terrific coach. But, Gordie Dwyer deserves some credit as we watch the
@SJSeaDogs at the Memorial Cup. Coach change decisions are often very difficult. It seems to be working out, but Dwyer has some influence in this teams success.
I have no idea what systems they had before they lost in the playoffs. I do know that the team underachieved so perhaps it's just a matter of a different voice saying the same thing. Not a knock on Gards, but this is not the Mighty Ducks movie. The pieces were always there. Looking forward to the game on Wed.No doubt, but you can see the UNB footprint all over the way the Sea Dogs are playing in the tournament for sure at both ends of the idea! They're all going to UNB.It will be interesting to see if any of the overage juniors from the Memorial cup end up at UNB?
One of the Bulldogs may be UNB bound?
A USports coach is not allowed to talk to protentional recruits during playoffs. Since the CHL playoffs are completed as of last night, he and other coaches can now talk to any players they want now. So yes, Gardiner can NOW talk to Reynolds about coming to UNB, and Lawrence as well (who still has his overage year left to play). What is the rule about recruiting players for Gardiner? I know some would say it would be an advantage just having coached the players? For example, IF he wanted Reynolds or Lawrence?
