He has some interesting approaches to motivating and having guys buy in for starters, he creates games within the game (ex: we will win the last 10 minutes of every game for the next 2 months) to keep players motivated, he's a quirky dude and I've seen him bag skate the team and yell through an entire practice after a blowout win over Dal 4-5 years ago.He definitely keeps guys on their toes and despite the Ned Flanders look , he is one intense S.O.B who is obsessed with winning. It obviously runs much deeper than this, I'd love to read a book some day on some of his coaching philosophy. He's a good guy though and when the group is bought in, players love playing for him.
It is B.E.S.T. - Better Every Single Time. He breathes the continuous improvement model in his coaching, and expects his players to buy in. Coast during a game, even a blowout, and you will hear about it. He is a workaholic ... no one can keep up with him. And yes, he is extremely competitive and wants to win at everything. Everything.

I'm guessing some of those kids in Saint John are in for a wake-up call. And they'll probably be better for it.

Couldn't agree more. But will they buy in?

Gards can be an "Iron Fist, Velvet Glove" type of coach at times. These players have underachieved in the post season and need a swift kick in the ass.

Be fun to see how it plays out over the next 30 days.

I saw him bench a dude for 25 minutes after a bad penalty. hopefully it works out in SJ, but there might be a few guys who wont like his style.

Bit of a surprising late departure, James Phelan signs in the ECHL.
Will miss his grit and willingness to go to the net. His point production tapered off in the playoffs (well, to be fair that was the case for the whole team). Take the optimistic view - creates another opening for Gardiner to fill, and he's getting a ton of good PR from the Memorial Cup.

Have to think with his improved play at the Memorial Cup Fredericton's Peter Reynolds might be on Gardiner's radar. Ever since he wasn't drafted his play with the Sea Dogs hasn't looked that focused, but he seems to have found new life under Gardiner.

I found he was never quite the same after suffering that injury against SMU.

I saw he recently posted something on Instagram talking about his time in Fredericton and thanking different people…so I figured he was moving on.

Definitely going to have lots of forward spots to fill…

Tweet from TSN Darren Dreger:

Gardiner MacDougall is a terrific coach. But, Gordie Dwyer deserves some credit as we watch the
@SJSeaDogs at the Memorial Cup. Coach change decisions are often very difficult. It seems to be working out, but Dwyer has some influence in this teams success.
No doubt, but you can see the UNB footprint all over the way the Sea Dogs are playing in the tournament for sure at both ends of the ice! Pretty amazing to take a team with less than 6 weeks and get them to this position to play for the cup!

I have no idea what systems they had before they lost in the playoffs. I do know that the team underachieved so perhaps it's just a matter of a different voice saying the same thing. Not a knock on Gards, but this is not the Mighty Ducks movie. The pieces were always there. Looking forward to the game on Wed.

Lots of holes to fill but these four guys are a nice start.

If they can land the other forwards previously mentioned + a top D that would be an A+ off-season IMO.

No surprise Gardiner MacDougall got Saint John to the promise land.
It was perfect-case scenario!

Saint John had a really good team.
They got upset in a 5-game series in the opening round of the Playoffs
So they end up healthy and rested.
The other 3 teams battle there way through their respective League Playoff's...Losing key players along the way.

MacDougall knows how to win Tournaments.
The Sea Dogs are at home.
He is a really good technical coach.
He always has his teams ready to start games.
Press Forecheck, activates his D's.
Doesn't middle-zone break-out because he wants to eliminate turnovers in front of his own goal.
And he had 21 practices to get his team ready.

Everyone in New Brunswick knows how good of a Coach MacDougall is....know everyone in the Country does!

What is the rule about recruiting players for Gardiner? I know some would say it would be an advantage just having coached the players? For example, IF he wanted Reynolds or Lawrence?

A USports coach is not allowed to talk to protentional recruits during playoffs. Since the CHL playoffs are completed as of last night, he and other coaches can now talk to any players they want now. So yes, Gardiner can NOW talk to Reynolds about coming to UNB, and Lawrence as well (who still has his overage year left to play).
