UNB Reds Thread (Part5)

Not sure the impact it will have. It’s an in-person ticket deal (child is free/parent 1/2 price)….but it doesn’t seem like there will be many walk-up tickets available.

Hopefully it is a legit sell-out/packed rink and not one of those “sell-outs” with 1000 empty seats because the ticket holders decided not to show up.
A buddy of mine got turned away at the door for game 3 in 2020 against Acadia and their was minimum 600 empty seats . I kind of have a hunch they set aside elementary tickets to give away . Can’t wait to have my seat kicked and people walking in front of me all game … hopefully campus security actually enforces the rules tonight.

The offense left over the break - that's the problem. They only had secondary scoring and that wasn't enough.
Yup…they had guys who were forced into playing higher in the lineup than they probably should have been. That’s what happens when you lose 3 big recruits over the summer and 2/3 of your top line at the break (not to mention the guys they lost over the shutdown). They just lost too much offensive talent and haven’t been able to replace it yet. Need to bring in some top line talent and push guys back down into a more favourable role.

Shows you how spoiled for snipers UNB has been for the last several years. The work ethic of this crew is unparalleled - they can shut down teams like no one's business, but they can't buy a goal sometimes. You have to have all the parts, and they didn't this season right from the get go.

Certainly the weakest UNB team for at least 15 years.

Not sure what will happen this Summer. While UNB obviously does a great job at recruiting it is difficult to get freshmen snipers.

I have compared this years team to the 2012 team. Still a very, good team…good enough to get through the AUS…but just never felt they were quite at the level needed to win the UCup. IIRC that team relied heavily on Carroll/Bailey/Culligan after Wiebe got injured…this year was kind of the same with the top 4-5 forwards needing to do all the scoring.

One problem is that some of their top scorers (SD-M/Rassell) may be moving on so they will also need to replace that offense. Fortunately they should have 3 roster spots to work with before any departures (I’m guessing Becker/McQuaid were just fill-ins for this season).

A lot of teams lost players during break. Hockey Gods decided it was Ryerson day which isn’t a bad thing for usports hockey

Dove-McFalls has signed an AHL deal.

They’re going to need a massive recruiting year…a 2007 (Bailey/Tremblay/Gallant/Yeomans) or 2018 (Boucher/Rassell/SDM/Gatenby) type of class.

Good for SDM, I am probably in a minority but I view him as the most likely NHL’er since Boyce. I’m not saying it’s going to happen but I could see him succeeding in your bottom 6 forwards , this year with the loss of Boland and Guay as well as loosing Gilmore for the second half we got to see him play up the lineup and he put up pretty solid numbers, at the CIS level he reminded me of a Patrice Bergeron.

FFS, you'd swear that UNB had never won before and this was their only chance. They have a very spoiled fan base. If they don't win by 5 every game, it's a bad game. UNB was getting 40 shots/game and clinched 1st place in October. They had a good team this year, even after the guys left in Jan. Look at other teams in the AUS who have never won anything for years and be thankful for what UNB has done over the past 15 years.

<Rant Over>

This is the time of year I really turn my attention to the QMJHL. I’ve noticed that there is a lot of overage offensive talent this season. Hopefully something UNB can take advantage of.

They'll be a lot of AUS teams looking to get players. SFX is pretty good but they also need to fill a few holes. Should be a fun recruiting season.

Apparently there are a ton of 19 year olds with the Saint John Seadogs this season. Only three of them would be able to stay as 20-year-olds next season with Saint John. Considering the Sea Dogs - UNB pipeline it has been suggested to me to watch where those overagers land up next season, and consider a number of them being UNB bound in two seasons.

Rassell was in his first year of his MBA to the best of my knowledge, I would expect him back in the fall and a very likely candidate to inherit the "C".

I wonder if any of the 4th year players plan on staying an extra season?

5th year is Not their option, it's Gardiners. He decides if he wants a guy to come back.

There have been a few 5th year guys, but they were special. You need to be very careful who you bring back.

You can't have a roster full of 5th year guys and then have nothing next year.

Peter Reynolds would look awfully good in Red and Black

I’ve been following Josh Lawrence…but he is having a great year (admittedly, on a stacked team) in his overage-1 season. Might get some pro looks.

Their overagers this year include three really good players - F Philippe Daoust (signed with Ottawa), F Ryan Francis (I thought he had signed with Calgary but Elite Prospects says otherwise…might be a target, from Halifax), and D Vincent Sevigny (undrafted).
