I'm not sure that these 2 players have played in the same game this year as Randell always seems to come out of the line-up to make way for coach favourite Talbot. I'm wondering how Julien justifies this as Talbot gets played as an energy forward on the 4th line but is incapable of doing this at any level. A washed up french guy brings back bad memories for me of Begin and many other cooked vets that Julien has played way, way, way too much over the years but I tried to look at it objectively and see where the Pros and Cons are.
Speed:
Randell
Tablot
Talbot in his day but there is no power left in his stride. No advantage either way.
Grit/Toughness:
Randell
Tablot
Huge, huge, huge advantage here to Randell. I believe the Bruins (as a team) play better with a HW scrapper in the lineup. 0-2 against the Oilers this year with Gazdic, Gryba etc in their line-up so playing toughness doesn't cost them wins but we sat Randell for both games Vs. the Oil and put Talbot in for both.
Scoring:
Randell
Tablot
Talbot has 0 goals in 28 games in Boston. Colorado was so happy to get rid of him that they offered to pay as much of his salary as they could to get him out. Has passed through league waivers TWICE without being claimed and Randell has nice hands and a quick release. Advantage Randell over 2015 version of Talbot.
Experience:
Randell
Tablot
Advantage Talbot. But does a team with Chara, Seids, Bergeron, Krejci etc need a guy like Talbot to hold their hand in the dressing room?
PKing:
Randell
Tablot
Again, advantage Talbot but I'm not seeing anything special that he is doing on the PK. Am I missing something? This isn't because of the injury to the Finn either as Talbot was in an out all season long.
Positions:
Randell
Tablot
Advantage Talbot (being able to play C) BUT ADVANTAGE Randell because we don't want Talbot playing C! Ferraro is much better suited for the job and that puts Talbot on the RW --where Randell is more effective
I ran the numbers quickly and the team is:
4-6 with Talbot in the Line-up
9-6 with Randell in the Line-up
I know those numbers don't tell the whole story, but they tell part of it ....and I've seen this story play out before --coach falls in love with washed up vet forward at the expense of a younger and better player who brings more, overall, to the team. Sweeney needs to have a sit down with Julien because nobody else wants to take Talbot for free.
