Gibson just shutout the Kings in the playoffs.....yeah what a deal we got by Burke....moved up to draft a dud because he was big. If we are lucky he makes the NHL and plays on the 3rd line!

It's boarderline when people say we gave up Seguin for Kessel, but this? Seriously? We did not give up Gibson for Biggs lol, the leafs most likley don't take a goalie with that pick.

Bigg's straight up sucks though, what an awful trade up.

Biggs for Baertschi

Burke would probably do that.

I'd do it without hesitation, no questions asked. We know Burke loves players he's familiar with and lets not pretend he doesn't also love big American players who play Biggs' style, as opposed to a small Euro player like Baertschi who is the polar opposite.

I would rather keep Biggs over Baertschi.

I don't care what the upside is on Biggs. We know exactly what we're going to get out of him.

Sven doesn't compete and is basically the same as 5 others that the Leafs have in their system.

Everyone talking about Gibson trade. We opted to draft him over players like Jenner and Saad.

I ask again, why aren't our scouts fired yet?

They gave up a pick that could have been Gibson. No sense in thinking they would have taken him. No one can say for sure besides the scouts/management themselves where they had Gibson ranked and may not have.

It's disappointing for sure because they drafted a faller in Biggs and its disappointing that we are going to watch one of the picks that was traded away have a good chance at becoming the goaltender we've been waiting for, but Toronto traded a pick. They didn't trade Gibson. To say it that way I feel is unfair.

Who knows, Gibson may have busted in the Leafs farm system.

Because if you judge your scouts from that kind of perspective, there would be no NHL scouts around. Every team in every draft picks a lesser player instead of someone who went later and ended up being better. Every team picks busts sometime, even in the first. Do people not realize how few players actually get anywhere?

You fire scouts if they consistently do weak picks, and Toronto has been decent, or isn't getting any impact from your draft, which is more of an issue but has a lot to do with how few picks Toronto tends to keep.

Nah, Burke like his soft players to. Burke seem to like players who are either soft, weak defensively but who are elite or close to it offensively. Or he like players who are big, strong and tough but with little skill. The most successful teams in the NHL, Chicago, Boston and LA have loads of 2-way players so I would prefer building with those. But Burke built this team differently. Top six, bottom six. And Burke have a won a cup so I guess he is right to. ;)

His dream line up is probably.

Kessel - Kessel - Kessel
Kadri - Kadri - Kadri
Biggs - Biggs - Biggs
Devane - Devane - Devane

So, last night John Gibson pitches a shutout in his first NHL playoff game in the second round versus the powerhouse LA Kings, stopping 28 shots.

The very same night, the Toronto Marlies take a commanding 2-0 series lead against the Chicago Wolves in the AHL Calder Cup playoffs. Tyler Biggs was scratched.

To be fair he should be playing over Maclaren.

I think when the leafs send guys down like Komisarek and Maclaren they promise to play them. Komi was terrible for the marlies last year too.

Your point is taken though Biggs doesn't bring much. Ryan is showing more than Biggs ever did and nobody expects Ryan to make the jump.

Think we are starting to see what type of player Biggs will be with the Leafs.

Had a solid game last night using his body, was defensively sound, a part of his game that is really underrated. Solid PK, hit that created a turnover that led to a goal.

The ceiling hope for him was to be Lucic 2.0, but realistically we are looking at bottom 6 value of a player that is defensively responsible and a good team soldier.

Great value for a 1st rd pick, maybe not so, bust? I disagree, if the league is going to a top 9, bottom 3 model. Biggs will be of value as 2/3 of the 1st rd shutdown 3rd or 4th line with Gauthier.

I think they are upset....

Because we could have had him in the 2nd or even 3rd round. Devane was a surprise 3rd rounder and Ross was dubious while Ryan was a stinker. Factor in 3 high picks for Kessel and Burke gutted the prospect pool real good. There isn't a lot of sense to much of what Burke did or said he would do, Biggs is a symptom, a poster boy for how Leaf fans suffered through some horrible years and got almost nothing to show for it, thanks to an exec who used to work in the NHL front office. Most teams who are as garbage as Toronto pick up a few good players while sucking, that frustration is being taken out on Biggs, who will never be Lucic and should have never been sold as one either.

They had to sell him as Lucic 2.0 to justify throwing away a 2nd rounder. Just like the Clarkson signing is justified because Clarkson's agent claimed there were other teams interested.IF you ask me, we are fed b.s year after year, Biggs is a reminder of all that b.s we got fed and how little of it was even true.

Don't try to sugar coat it, this guy is a bust and a half. Guy looks lost out there.

Gauthier was picked 21st overall, Biggs 22nd overall. Both are first rounders. Both are destined to play to their strengths when they make the NHL.

This is as Defensive role players, both with size, both good PK players, both with limited offence, and both as good team soldiers.

With the NHL going towards a top 9, bottom 3 alignment. Both fit as 3rd or 4th liners pencilled into our line up in 2 or 3 years.

If Biggs is a bust, then Gauthier is too. I see both as players that will not reach their ceilings when picked. Biggs Lucic 2.0, Gauthier a top 6C or even a Hanzal like player. Does this mean they are busts? No. Busts do not play in the NHL, I am certain both will play in the NHL, we can debate whether they were the proper picks for a first rounder in another thread.

Hopefully he becomes a third liner in the NHL and can provide toughness and some secondary scoring. I really liked his game last night. Yes, he was playing against kids younger than him, but he actually looked very good. Let's see him play like that with the Marlies and get some extended ice time and maybe he'll see a few games with the big club.

Busts most certainly play in the NHL. Alexandre Daigle was a huge bust, he played for years. "Bust" isn't an exact term, it's relative to where the player was selected, what was expected, etc. You can't say "busts don't play in the NHL" because that's simply not true for all situations.

Biggs is a bust depending on who you talk to. You can drink the kool-aid from Leafs management about Biggs being groomed for a defensive 3rd line role or whatever, but we traded up into the 1st round to get this guy with a couple of high picks and started touting him as our own Lucic type player, future power forward who can play on a 2nd line. Suddenly they were grooming him to be a 3rd liner at best this whole time? I don't think so, I think it's pretty clear to everyone that Biggs is a disappointment at this point in his career.

If he eventually makes the Leafs, and that is an "IF", not a "WHEN", we're just going to hope he can do some forechecking, some aggressive hitting, etc. Basically all we're hoping for our first round power forward that we traded up in the 1st for is some average 3rd line play. Sounds a bit like a bust to me.

Gauthier on the other hand was drafted exactly for that kind of role, so he's looking good right now.

See and I believe how you describe it as unfair also.

I think it's very fair for people to point out players picked in that slots general area, it allows for some scope and it does put into question our scouts also,

Now I'm not going debate about players that went before our slot or a few rounds later, but I have always felt it fair game to look at that slot and say 20/25 picks after it (or in other words, his general grouping).
