I would HATE to do it but I would do Minten and 1st for Schenn because I think a top 3 center position of Matthews, Tavares Schenn is a matchup nightmare for any team in the league.

So yeah I'd trade future considerations

Even if you get him, our team is becoming very old in terms of hockey age. Especially if you re-sign JT. Hope we win the cup in the next 2 seasons. If not, then when? How do you replace the older players with younger players if you have 0 prospects? I'd take Schenn for free, but I mean our team is ancient.

This is what a lot of cup teams look like. A lot of vets in their early 30's.

At full cap hit= Domi + Jarnkrok + 1st
At 5 Million = Domi+ Minten + 3rd
At 4 Million = Kampf+ Jarnkrok+ Minten+ 2nd

That's as far as I would go

The asking price is what it is because Tre is likely asking for 50% retention.

I highly doubt any team will give up a 1st round pick plus an A prospect for Schenn without retention.

He's one of the many players I would love for us to get but contract/age kind of makes you not want to do it. So many players who are 30+ you love but don't want to take on their cap hit for the remaining years.

I don’t love it. There is 0 chance if we do that Tavares comes in for less.

If we think a 2009 draft 25 goal 50 pt c is worth assets and 6.5x3. What is he worth?

Extending JT would be better value by just about any metric you want to use in this scenario.

Though worth acknowledging I think the team could technically find a way to get value of Schenn full priced by Tre dumping his iffy forward contracts of Kampf, Domi Reaves.

The only way the team could get some genuine value out of him would be with 1-2 mil retained

Schenn’s contract is brutal. 6.5M for a guy that is going to get 40-50 points signed to term and declining is bad and giving up multiple premium assets to get him is even worse.
If you could get them to take back Domi and retain 3M it becomes more palatable but if they are already asking for a 1st and good prospect, that kinda retention is going to be way too expensive.

For all the people saying just trade multiple players like Kampf, Reaves, and Jarnkrok. That isn’t really how the cap works. If you are moving multiple roster players out you have to add the cost of their replacements in as well.

The better way to phrase the question would be: if St. Louis bought out Brayden Schenn today, would you be happy if the Leafs gave him 6.5Mx4?
Since he's not a free agent, I think it's more: what would be a good price point for him, what would that be worth in a trade, and how much do you subtract because he's overpaid.

It's less than they want, naturally, but it's more than nothing - his overpay doesn't offset his entire value.

He would be a good add, but if we're going to continue with the studs and duds approach it doesn't really work without retention, and that probably gets too complicated - particularly because our war chest is mostly empty.

I don't want either considering the rumored asking price. Would be much cheaper to get Evans and Savard out of Montreal. Evans has one less goal than Brayden Schenn, 9 less points and costs 1.7 against the cap. Savard can play top 4 RD whereas Luke is more of a bottom pairing. Oh and Evans is a plus on an awful Montreal club

If the price for Luke is reasonable like mid round pick. Then I don’t see why not.

Brayden needs to be fair as he is no longer the player he once was and his asking price looks closer to Rantanen.

RIP to the third one, Luke ate him :((((

If Luke could help Rielly play like he did 2 years ago in the playoffs and come pretty cheap I would take him.

With McCabe and Tanev as your top pairing, at least in a shutdown role and OEL going down to the third pairing, added with the play of Stolarz I think it becomes pretty good.
