There is an interesting discussion here. I agree with Gordon somewhat. Even more than Soap opera, or space opera, or sitcom, I like formula. I find it comforting to predict what will happen to a point or in comedy to get the joke. I take it to ridiculous extremes a la' the The Wild Wild West though.

Btw I will never get Seinfeld....something about it just leaves me totally cold even when I get the set-up(s) and the joke(s). If it is any comfort, I think I am the only one who feels that way about the show.
Seinfeld never caught my attention. Meh. Overrated like In N' Out.

Yep, that's basically it.
So long as we're in Hot TV Takes Territory, here's my other 90's sitcom one: Friends sucks. Like, Marcel the Monkey was the only engaging character and he didn't last past season 1. I thought they were all insufferable and should have been deported to France or something. Bleh. (Also I didn't like the US version of The Office. I could barely watch the much better UK version because it was just way too cringe inducing.)

It was ok, just a piece of plastic with some nice eye candy.

Everyone on Friends is just so unlikable. Not like Seinfeld where them being unlikable is the point and makes it funny, but they're supposed to be protagonists but they're all flat caricatures of 90s twenty-something hip New Yorkers with like 2 personality traits each.

I like the Office, but the problem is that after its peak (seasons 2-5), it feels like the writers got full of themselves and were way too self-serving. The last few seasons were a drag.

I'm so old I can remember the local tv repair man. He had new & refurbished sets in his shop. If your tv broke down he'd come to the house to look at it. Most times he had the right part with him (usually a tube) but sometimes he had to take the set back with him. It was fascinating to watch him remove the back of the tv and check all the tubes & wiring.
That would've been my dad. He had a station wagon and brought me along on many jobs.

If you are a political history buff with a taste for science fiction/time travel/what might have been, plus a sucker for the sentimental, check the well-cast, meticulous period detail of

Yes, the usual Stephen King business (want a list?), but worth viewing.

Wow that looks great. I'll have to research how/where I can watch it.

I watch very little fictional tv these days. Hollywood seems to have lost its ability to create original programming. I'm not talking about cable or streaming services, from what I've read here there is some good stuff out there. I'm talking about network tv and the movies, where it seems all you can watch are re-boots of old shows, re-makes of old movies and blockbuster series like Spider Man, etc.

I keep coming back to that lyric of Nirvana's "Smell Like Teen Spirit"- "...here we are now, entertain us". This generation of Hollywood doesn't know how to create entertainment, it only knows how to consume it.

Just my .02
"How I Met Your Mother" annoys the living shit out of me. Can't put a finger on it but I can't stand any of the characters, the writing etc. Just hate that show.

Although Brad Pitt gave his greatest performance as the president of the I hate Rachel Green club.

It went downhill without Michael Scott.

I loved Pam more than Jim did.

Frasier was brilliant. Maybe not quite so much at the end, but it was so funny for so long.
Bah - I can't stand that freaking show......although it's probably because of my personal beef with David Hyde Pierce. If interested check out post #33:

Anybody here watch " What We Do in the Shadows " ????

It's about a group of vampires living in present day Staten Island. The first 4 seasons were great and Season 5 just started airing on FX. :thumbu:
Yes, I watch it in spurts. Very funny.

They did as well as anyone has with it. It's eminently rewatchable.
Yes.

To me, I like the bigger stuff, but I really enjoy the throwaway stuff, "the business."

There's a lot of that on Seinfeld, and there was a lot of that in the first three seasons of MASH.

Just stupid stuff. And that's what makes it funny. It's just stupid.

I fear I shall be lost in translation, especially with some guy who cannot shake his dislike for Alan Alda.

I really want to like it. I'm such a huge Matt Berry fan.

Haven't been able to get into it. I think it's probably the fake doc The Office and other wannabes formula that I find so off-putting.

Gonna keep trying though

We were bored and decided to watch that Fubar show on Netflix with Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's actually pretty funny so far, though I'm only like 4 episodes in.
