I think both parties want to continue with him as a Hab.

But sometimes it's a business and it doesn't work out. MB may not want to give a big cap hit - or even a decent cap hit - to Gallagher on an 8 year deal. That's a big risk for a player that will be 29 when the contract kicks. Anderson got himself a 7 year deal. But it starts now, when he's 26. MB didn't sign Anderson past 32. But Gallagher wants a big cap hit for himself at the ages of 33, 34, 35, 36. It's impossible for anyone to know how effective he'll be at those ages - how many injuries he'll have suffered, when his body will start to slow down, as is normal for NHLers after 33.

But even if MB doesn't want to go 8 years, the Gallagher camp may correctly assert: I can get 8 years on the open market. At which point, MB either has to go against his beliefs and risk having a big cap hit against the cap without much production over the 2nd half of the contract, or he has to tell Gallagher he just can't do it. you'll have to go elsewhere. At which point Gallagher either has to bite the bullet for the team or get his lucrative payday somewhere else. It's his opportunity to set not only is family up, but his great great great great grandchildren up for life.

No guarantees either party gives in when there is so much at stake on both sides.

I think at this point it's posturing.....how far away can they really be?
Although Gallagher can still ask for 8 years, he won't get it on the UFA market either so that's only an option here.

If I'm Gallagher's camp, I'm looking at Kreider's deal.
Winger, similar offensive production, same age and both have their intangible.
That's 7 years at $6.5M.

The Habs on the other hand probably look at deals like Eberle or Zuccarello which is more around 5 years at $6M

If you give Lehkonen his linemates and ice time, I wouldn't be surprised to see him put up 40-45 points while playing just as hard as Gallagher does.

Imo Kreider has a much smaller chance of breaking down faster than Gallagher. That's a risky contract. But a similar deal is way more risky for Gallagher...

Normally I'm on the players' side. But in the next CBA, the max contract length needs to be 5 years. Too much risk in anything beyond that.

I think owners kind of just give extra just so the union is satisfied that some players get well-compensated for producing when they were working for peanuts, relatively speaking.

Everyone should settle down, take a midol for cramps. Gallagher will get his due ... 6 at 6. He IS our HEART. Relax.

he was the heart before Bergy just plugged in Toffoli and Anderson...open heart transplant right before our eyes..

Owners also don’t want premium players getting to UFA too early. If you are in a middling market and get at top player, you want to lock him down. The Matthews contract is interesting in that he negotiated a lesser term.

Possibly. If you give him an extra 2M, so 5.75 and another 1.25M more to Phil and Army, plus a nice raise for Lehkonen, that's all of Tuna's salary. If KK has a great year, his salary could take a huge jump. Someone else would have to be moved.

KK with a great yr and playoff 8 million

KK with a 90 -95pt season and great playoff..ask 10 million

He and Suzuki are danger zone contracts...either one could explode and we pay big $

And Danault will want 5.5 for 7 years as well.
It's too much money for 3rd and 2nd line forward when you have a goalies and a defensive costing you more than half your cap.

Covid changed everything!
We are talking about a flat cap for 3 years. All comparables are out the window.

I believe the recent breakdown between Gally and Bergevin is probably due to Bergie realizing that the current UFA market and beyond will be cheaper than anticipated. (Next 2 summer)

He just signed Toffoli at a very good deal and I don't think any other NHL team will break the bank for Gallagher next summer. Next summer would be very similar with many teams having to trade away some players to fit within the salary cap.

I think Bergevin realized that and might have reduced his initial offer and that is the reason why the negotiation broke down between him and Gallagher.

There are no such thing as the heart of the team.

Gallagher is not a franchise player and as good and great of a player he is if he is asking for too much money/term then the habs should rightfully re-question his longterm role with this team.

Seems to me this is a lot of nothing. Just two parties going through the neg process. But because it is MTL it’s become something. Just a lot of baseless speculation.

Gallagher and his agent better be reading the tea leaves carefully here.
It's highly unlikely fans will be allowed in full force to attend games next year.
Revenue will be down. The cap will be down.
All parties know this. Silly to say he'll get what Kreider got. That was pre covid.
It's different now. Will Gallagher roll the dice and end up with even LESS? I'm sure there's a lot to churn for him.
