That’s the question.

Even if they change the core it’ll take a minute for them to jell and sort everything out. That’s why Matthews can’t be signed on a short term (3 yr) deal.

If I had more confidence in Treliving having the freedom to do what he really wants I'd have more optimism for the outlook of this team.

Right now it looks like they're gonna burn off the last year of Matthews, Nylander's, and Keefe's contracts. Maybe those guys will all be back again after. Maybe not.

It's a shame Treliving's first year is looking a bit of a waste.

I would have liked to see him make a bold move. He can still do it. There's still time.

There's no reason he can't still surprise fans somehow with a big trade.

Nylander for Hellebuyck.

There’s too much to do in one off-season. The best thing he can do is let some of the contracts expire and then use that money to build around the pieces.
I would think one of Nylander or Matthews will be gone after this season which gives them lots of cap flexibility.

If the board and Shanahan wanted to the bold move they should have just kept Dubas because he was going to trade a piece of the core. I think that also played a factor into his firing.

I think Shanny’s vision is winning with the core his put together and he’s unwilling to budge from that.

If Treliving replaces Shanahan, that would make his hiring the best "free agent" acquisition for the team this summer by far.

The only real move he has left is to dump the coach but it doesn’t look like he is planning that

Is there any good free agent coaches left?

And please don't suggest Quenneville.

I don't like the idea of them saving the "fire the coach bullet". It means they aren't doing everything they can to make this team the best it can be during a contention year. Replacing a proven loser like Keefe is a no brainer if you ask me.

Maybe Gallant can come in and shake the sugar tree.

If and when Keefe slips or struggles the team will turn internally to Guy Boucher who was hired as an assistant coach for Sheldon.

If Treliving opts to extend Keefe I doubt he'll be so quick to fire him.

Everything out of Treliving and Shannys mouth this summer has been very pro-Keefe.

What Tyler Bertuzzi's playoff series vs. Panthers says about what he brings to Toronto

Tyler Bertuzzi was extremely productive in his first playoff appearance. A deep dive into his series with Boston reveals what he offers the Maple Leafs.

View attachment 732513
What may have tipped the scales for teams interested in Bertuzzi — including the Toronto Maple Leafs who ultimately signed him to a one-year, $5.5-million deal — was what he did in his first taste of playoff action with the Boston Bruins.

Although his 2022-23 regular season wasn't particularly impressive, he came alive in Boston's first-round battle with the Florida Panthers.

Bertuzzi saved his best work for last, giving an excellent final impression to teams looking to sign him while simultaneously showing he was the type of player capable of making an impact in the postseason.

It would be unfair to say the Maple Leafs signed Bertuzzi solely based on what he did in seven games against the Panthers, but it would be naive to assume it didn't play a meaningful role in their pursuit of the winger.

A closer look at his playoff performance can give us a better understanding of both what Toronto saw in Bertuzzi, and what the forward is likely to bring to the Maple Leafs in 2023-24.

10 points and a -4 in 7 games on a good team is not a good sign.

Thanks for the response.

Boucher was rumoured to be someone they were interested in when they ended up hiring Babcock. So I'm not entirely surprised to find him on the payroll now. The sooner they move on from Keefe the better.

They might not win with Boucher, but they definitely aren't gonna win with Keefe.

Not sure whether Reaves plays more than 60 games, not sure whether he dresses in the playoffs at all...one thing is for sure, Leafs haven't had a player that hits with intent to destroy in a very long time.

You should go back and actually watch the GA he was on for rather then just blindly reference his +/-
I didn’t post the +/-. Didn’t he have a bunch of PP points and maybe a hat trick

I don't know if I buy that anything would be anything different.

Don't get me wrong, Shanahan's awful and has long since deserved to be fired, but if he's been kept around this long after all this embarassing failure he's likely making the owners happy...which means they are the real problem and replacing Shanahan won't have the effect it should.

We'd still have Dubas if Shanahan had his way and Dubas didn't try to put Shanahan in the "Ken Dryden" I have a title but no power position. I can't wait for Shanahan to get fired. He's spineless and not very good at his job, whatever that is.

Trade Nylander(with extension) for a similar package that Dubois brought back just centred around a quality dman.

Unload Murray somewhere…

Deal Liljegren (for equally good forward with character EI… Laughton)

Deal Timmons for a pick.

Ideally we’d also get our hands on a really great goalie prospect (Askarov???) somehow. (Maybe in the Nylander trade???)

Personally I’d call up Trotz and try to deal Nylander to Nashville for Trenin + Fabbro + Askarov

😁
So we shouldn’t expect William to give us a team friendly deal, should we? After all how bad would that be, William saying he will wait to see if Mathews gives us a discount before he signs.

Lol both leaf captains staring at the refs, begging for penalties in the playoffs. Marner did the very same thing when Tkachuk attacked him in the Florida series.

These guys don't get playoff hockey.
this would be a valid statement if the Leafs players didnt get penalties called for much lesser infractions.

refereeing in the playoffs is a joke.

They had Matt Martin who could have easily played on a fourth line
lots of heart, but strikes no fear and loses most of his fights ...though he can play a semi-regular shift. for some reason his play only 'fits' on the Islanders

Meanwhile the #1 task on his todo list, sign 34 remains outstanding and he allowed the NMCs to kick in July 1st. He's passed the tests so far but not by much for me. We continue to wait for his next move(s) and to see what we have in October.
