Underlying numbers at 5v5 are mostly improved compared to last year, particularly defensive metrics.

Wouldn't it make more sense to compare the same segment of games? Doesn't make sense to me to compare a full season sample to a 17 game sample.

Why?

Edit: I added in the start for you, I'm still not sure it adds much, generally, having the larger sample is preferable as it reduces the impact of variables like strength of schedule, or injuries. Generally speaking, the bigger the sample, the more stable and more predictive of future results they become.

I'm genuinely curious why you'd prefer to compare this season to the same sized sample, in terms of what additional value would that bring? I can only think of post trade deadline potentially being tougher due to trading away guys, I guess there's also the arguement that we're comparing DJ/Martin so maybe by using the first 17 we isolate DJ, we could do the same and isolate Martin...

edit2: in the spirit of being fully open, added more rows

If your Travis Green and you wake up this morning what are you thinking.....
Your team has just lost 5 of it's last 7 games. And then I look down the bench and I have to put these missing in action guys out on the ice below.

Giroux 1 pt in last 9 games.
Pinto 0 in last 4.
Perron has 0 pts all season.
Sanderson 2 pts in last 12 games.
Greig 0 pts last 12 games

How many threads are you going to post that list in?

He's only got a couple options,

Throw the lines through a blender,
Bring in JBD for Hamonic
Call someone up (not really any offensive help in Belleville though)

Oh, and he can bag skate them,

None of that will get Ullmark to make some saves though.

I was against it earlier, but maybe try Jensen with Sanderson to get him going? Should need to do it, but Sandy has been struggling.

Very fair point. I think Green was a mediocre, uninspired choice for head coach, but there is no question that every guy you name here is struggling mightily. Giroux is likely age based regression - he held off Father Time exceptionally well, but it is catching up. It has fully caught up to Perron, who in hindsight was probably not a great signing. There were clear signs of regression for Perron last year, which is why Detroit moved on. "Veteran leader, great in the room", blah blah blah - don't care. If you can't score, you can't play in the top six - period, full stop.

As for Greig, he needs a blast of tough love. He is doing none of the things that got him here. I would make a callup from Belleville and then sit him in the pressbox for a couple of games. When he gets back, he goes to the fourth line and gets told to start playing the kind of game that got him to the NHL. Work hard and maybe you get to the third line, but in no universe is that guy a top six forward right now - he might not ever be.

i would put the lines through the blender, since we arent going to bench hamonic

Perron-Stutzle-Giroux/Batherson
Tkachuk-Norris-Gaudette
Greig-Pinto-Batherson/Giroux
Cousins/Gregor/MacEwen-Ostapchuk-Amadio

Sanderson-Jensen
Chabot-Zub
Kleven-Hamonic

if we actually bench Hamonic

Sanderson-Jensen
Chabot-JBD
Kleven-Zub

*zub hasnt been great lately and i think getting him some more sheltered minutes until the hopeful bounce back would be ideal

I do think that Gaudette on the second line wont be a long term solution, or even a good solution but a shakeup is needed

Gotta try jbd. Something's gotta give. I like the top 4 switch idea as well. Let greig center 4th line. Try pinto with brady and norris.

They aren't winning or losing from swapping in JBD or a Belleville body, so I get it. They will live and die on the team that's put together now.
I hear you, and I don’t mind Hamonic in a six slot, but in my view they are currently winning and losing on account of the unintentional swap of Gregor and Perron. Amazing how a small tweak can change the game this team plays. So in saying that I wonder if JBD and his 15 minutes a night might actually be a shot in the arm of the team.

I don't know if I agree with that specifically about Perron, but I understand the sentiment and sometimes these little changes can be a shot in the arm for the team. Imo, the main ones letting the team down right now are the core, so I'm sort of one the fence. Give the team a shot in the arm, or are they giving the impression the tertiary players are the problem. I don't know the answer, but in general, I don't think we're winning any of the last few by making those swaps, imo.

This team was playing better with Ostapchuk in the lineup. The obvious is that he made the third line better but it's more than that. There's an Ostapchuk effect in that he makes everything around him better by osmosis, he is that kind of player.

Greig would need to go down as he is waiver exempt and he could use the stint in the A to get his touch back but it's unlikely. Also unlikely we waive anyone on the 4th line considering how good that line has been for most of the year.

Two Travis Green type players that need to get going (and I thought would be serious dudes all season):

Ridley Greig - 2 goals, 4pts in 15 games
Shane Pinto - 1 goal, 3 points, -6

Pinto is the one I'm more concerned about. I was expecting 30-40 pts from Greig but Pinto should be pacing around 50 imo, he's running at about half that clip and is a key part of our offensive depth.
