Also regarding the bullshit about Tkachuk choosing the coach.

This is exactly what Friedman said regarding that matter.

I think the other thing here, too, is, and I always look for connections. Travis Green played with Keith Kachak in Arizona, and I kind of look at it and wonder, is there a little bit of Keith Kachak saying, I know this guy, and it works for us. You can't let the captain pick the coach, but you want to know that there's not going to be any preconceived problems.

And, you know, I just can't help but wonder. It's my opinion. I'm sure people will run wild with the conspiracy theories, but it's my opinion that Green and Kachak having a bit of a history can't be a bad thing here
.”

I appreciate you taking the time to post the entire quote.

I never suggested that Tkachuk picked the coach, or that they wouldn't take one of their first choices. I simply posed a question yesterday or the day before about whether the Tkachuks may have had influence on who was chosen, and asked whether there is a prior relationship there between Green and Keith. As in, was Green one of their top choices, and Tkachuk's blessing would have put him over the top.

I was told that was absurd that a captain would have any influence over that process.

This was from a podcast that was released this morning.

This is the transcript generated by Apple Podcasts

“I think they had extended conversations with Craig Barube. We talked about it on your show the other day. I think there were two issues.

Number one, I don't think that Ottawa, and these are just conversations with other coaches, in the circles that it wasn't seen as Barube's number one choice. I think he felt there were other options that he thought were potentially better for him. I know there's a lot of talk in Ottawa about money.

And I don't think it's that simple. I think that Barube is basically, Barube signed a contract in St. Louis that he's still under. And he feels that that is his worth.

And he can afford to be a pick and choose, because if there's anything he doesn't like, then he can just say, look, I'll wait for longer. He's being paid next year by the Blues, if he doesn't coach. So I think he can afford to be a little bit choosy.

I think he can afford to say, this is my number. And I don't think it's necessarily that the Senators are being cheap here, but I think they knew what the number was going to be. And I think they just felt that it wasn't where they wanted to go to.

Plus it was the fact that I think they sensed that they were not necessarily his number one choice. And I think that's important. And so they go to Green.”

Friedman also said that there was a lot going on in Vancouver with the GM, owner, etc. and that the organization was dysfunctional.

He also said that he thought the situation in Ottawa was different as the Senator players (the core) are older and have more experience than their Vancouver counterparts.

Somewhat/mildly Interesting observation about Apple Podcast transcripts - It looks like they use phonetics when spelling player last names given the example of Kachak and Barube.

OR we can question their decision-making because the guy in charge of the hiring process has almost no track record of hiring coaches or making any decisions at the NHL level, for that matter.

1. July 25, 2012 - December 4, 2014: Player Development Advisor for the Leafs
2. December 4, 2014 - January 6, 2015: Manager of Player Development for the Leafs
3. January 6, 2015 - June 5, 2015: coaching staff assistant for the Leafs
4. June 5, 2015 - October 6, 2022: Hamilton Bulldogs President (GM title added in 2016)
5. October 6, 2022 - September 29, 2023: Special Advisor to the Edmonton Oilers hockey staff
6. September 29, 2023 - present: President of the Senators

1. not involved with hiring
2. not involved with hiring
3. not involved with hiring
4. OHL
5. Woodcroft was named interim in February 2022 and given an extension + made permanent head coach in June 2022. So, Staios not involved with hiring.

So, we only have his OHL record to look at with regards to hiring. During his time, he hired John Gruden, Dave Matsos, Vince Laise and Jay McKee. In his tenure as GM, his teams accumulated a .588 pts%, which is pretty good in a league where 16/20 teams makes the playoffs. Unfortunately, it puts you on the playoff bubble in the NHL, most years. (Funny enough, we might end up with Gruden and/or McKee on the bench this year. Something you guys would have roasted the last management group for pseudo-nepotism hires but will completely sign off on now.)

I don't understand this disdainful condescension you're showing people for rightfully questioning how we got to this hire. Like, no one in this organization has some sterling track record of accomplishment at the NHL level and you're somehow incredulous that people are questioning the people doing the hiring...

They had multiple, lengthy conversations with Berube and no one thought to ask after the first meeting what his number was? They "got down the road" in conversation before they realized his number was too high for them? That's supposed to somehow make us feel confident that these guys know what they're doing?

The complete oversight of not including Dave Poulin in this analysis makes it pretty worthless IMO.

Anyone know the type of X’s and O’s systems that Green employs?

Thats most important to me

There is one out there…so many interviews and articles lately I just don’t recall which one it is…
*maybe* it was Thomas Drance who covers the Canucks.

I’ve read he likes to employ a dump and chase along with a passive D zone coverage.

Sounds similar to DJ and the opposite of what I would run if I was coach

I have no issue with a dump and chase style (with forecheck), it just comes down to whether the players are making the right decisions about when to dump vs when to carry over the blueline. DJs team was terrible in this regard.

He is owed 3.5 million by the Blues for 2024-25. He wanted that made up, the amount he'd be foregoing by signing, and the Sens were not even a team he wanted to really go to. We never balked at a 3.5 million contract, as was posted

The misconstrued stuff being posted by fans on twitter is awful
I think it was pretty irresponsible for Friedman to initially hint at financial reasons then saying the sens should explain it

This pretender of the coach will fall and burn with the 5-15 start!

Not judging until I watch what he does for 10-20 games, at least.

He will do absolutely nothing. He got his money already, not much, but who cares. Just watch his NHL coached games. No system, lazy plays, turnovers, bad defense, no urgency, bad PP and PK. We watched this shit before, why to put it on an eternal rewind?

what was the question and answer?
Asking about hiring him with other more proven guys being interviewed and the fans wanting the more proven guy.

Answered, paraphrased, that looking at the wins and loss record for coaches is a pretty simple, yet uneffective way at judging a coach. Team, attributes, and other things need to be taken into context, and they feel he was the guy they wanted with this group. Mentioned how half the winners in the league were in the same position that Green is currently in at some point.

This is the way for Canadian woke timid media to say, that the new Sens coach is an absolute pile of shit!

Time will tell, maybe he's learned a thing or two.

I am predicting 5-15 as well if there are no changes to the roster. Maybe 7-13. The 1st round pick forfeiture is gonna be pretty scary. We are going to cut it close
