25+ min last night against Kucherov. No love for Travis? I can’t believe people were writing this guy off
he's been great since Muzzin went down in what you could make a strong case is the #1D role. It's almost a tale of 3 seasons for him - he wasn't good early in the year, then from something like late december he started having lots of good games with some poorer showings mixed in, then late in the year he's really found it...last night was like his 8th or 9th really good game in a row. To me it looks more like lingering effects of injury than anything else at this point, and he has the top trait that makes players successful NHL'ers imo - he processes information very fast

Problem for expansion draft. We can only protect 3 D and we certainly need a top rhd. So if we get a top RHD we protect Rielly, RHD and Muzzin, Leaving Dermott and Holl for picking.
So do we just package him in a trade instead of losing him??

I would take the "don't take the test early" approach, give Dermott the better part of a year to see what we have and to see if we have a RHD that we want to protect. I would also be giving Dermott a long look on the right side to see if that's viable. If he keeps playing like this he'll either make himself indispensable or valuable in a trade, either of those is a good thing for us.

I mean if we get a top rhd Dermott is likely traded anyways, but you just take your chances. Sandin and Liljegren are exempt.

If they develop as expected then you start with them and the 3 you protect. Then you still have one of Dermott or Holl to complete your top 6.

Could leave Muzzin unprotected. Get one more good year out of him, and then avoid having him on the books as he's getting older.

He was fantastic last night. Made a ton of good plays with the puck and uses his edges so well to evade pressure. In particular, I noticed that he was quite calm which was one of my biggest criticisms before (he looked like his hair was on fire every game). I was particularly impressed at the end of the game with 10-15s to go and the puck went into his corner and he just shut it down till the clock ran out. He's deceptively strong.

It's really great to see him taking the step forward that we were hoping for. It's very important to remember that a defender's development is a rocky process and Dermott's seen his share of rocky. He'll certainly have a chance to play himself into our long term plans over the remainder of the season and through next year's. Hope he seizes the opportunity as he has this one. He's got all the tools to be a very good defenseman in the league for a very long time.

And it would behoove us to take some lessons from Dermott's development and remember it when Sandin and Liljegren go through struggles down the line. With young defensemen patience is one of the most important things and it is often rewarded.

I've been defending him for months. It's amazing when you get ice time what you can do. I looked at his skills, speed, quickness, good passer, decent shot and not afraid which isn't easy when you're face is up against the glass with a forechecker 3 inches taller and 20 pounds heavier. We won't know exactly what we have for another year or two as it takes most defencemen til their mid 20's to properly develop. We have been lacking in our D core basically for a decade or two and some hot takers in here want to dump him when he makes a mistake or two. I've liked him since we drafted him and hope he's around for many years to come. I have a feeling I'll be defending Liljegren also. Give him time. He still a kid.

Dermott has been great since Muzzin injury. Problem is that we can only keep 3 dmen come expansion draft time. Our LHD will be Reilly, Muzzin and Sandin long term. With Sandin being ineligible to be exposed that would mean one RHD would be protected as well.

My guess is Dermott and forward are dealt this off season to acquire that RHD and then he will be protect. As part of a huge package we should be able to acquire a young RHD to be part of our core for the next 4 years (Reilly, Muzzin, Sandin, Lilly, New RHD, and hopefully Holl passes through).

Time will tell, but Dermott has increased his value with his play lately. Here's hoping for a strong playoffs as well to continue to increase his value.

The thing is young guys dont usually get the experience that Dermott has been forced into. He & Holl still have their small burps but its getting better. It was kindve of a blessing in disguise all this happened.

At this point, I think you really have to find a way to keep him in the top 4 even when Muzzin is back. He's been excellent
The Muzzin signing has really made things interesting. Basically one of Dermott or Rielly need to play the right side or Dermott will be playing the 3rd pairing.

I think at the start of the season Dubas wasnt planning on resigning Muzzin but his stellar play changed his mind and made the expansion draft a little more interesting lol

at the point when we get Muzzin back, would anyone not want to try him on the right side? Like even if he's worse than he has been in the last little while by virtue of playing his off side, doesn't that seem like a big upgrade over Ceci or Holl?

Dermott is at his best imo when he is playing physical but picking his spots. He can run around too much in the neutral zone trying to stand guys up. He was good last game, he laid hits that were smart because even it he didn't connect 100% he did not lose position on that player. I still don't understand why Dermott at times in the D zone will get the puck and not skate, he will stop and look for a stretch pass. He could outskate the pressure but doesn't and has the skating to do it. He is a solidly built hockey player who is the only player aside from Muzzin looking for a big hit.

Dermott or Rielly to the right on the top pair (i dont care which) keep Holl and Muzzin as the shutdown pair, Barrie and Sandin on the bottom pair (shelter the hell out of them)

That makes the most sense to me

Completely agree with this assessment. He's definitely been trending in the right direction as the season has gone on.

He's only 23 and I don't think it can be overstated how he had major off-season shoulder surgery, missed all of training camp and the start of the season. He had a lot of catching up to do in his 3rd season.

My guess is Sandin goes down when Muzzin returns. No way do Leafs want to burn a year to UFA.

I'd go 7D and keep Ceci there as well. He's at least serviceable on the PK and will take some pressure off Sandin too.

Then one of Ceci or Barrie has to play beside Rielly on the top pair
I'm seriously not keen on that

I forgot he even existed

They won't sit one of their RHD for Sandin and have Sandin burn a year to UFA. Sandin might be in over his head anyway in the playoffs, if the playoffs even happen.

If your in the playoffs I'd have thought playing your best team would be the better plan and that's not Barrie or Ceci in the top 4

You are normally correct but I can't see Dubas sitting Barrie or Ceci and moving Dermott to the right side in order to put in Sandin. We may never find out.

When everyone is healthy what does our D pairings look like?

I want to see Rielly-Holl, Dermott-Muzzin, but then that leaves Ceci-Barrie on the same pairing and I don’t think that can succeed even with limited minutes. No way Dermott gets pushed to the third pair after his play recently. Do we run Muzzin-Barrie then Dermott-Ceci
and play them equally? I can’t see a solution for our bottom pair
