Defenders, especially defensive guys like Holl, are really hard to evaluate, but I strongly disagree. Why not pair him with Muzzin next year on a shutdown pair? He's got a higher ceiling then Holl, and really as much as I like Holl, he's not a top 4 dman on a contender.
Holl has been a great find - a guy who can handle top 4 duties in the exact position of need that we got for nothing and was just lurking under our noses. I will say though that he sometimes doesn't feel the pressure well enough and gets caught holding the puck when the forecheck arrives, he did that a bunch last night where he had time to make a play and tried to wait out for something better to open then got caught. When he feels the pressure, I agree with you, skates the puck out of danger and makes good passes, can both enter and exit the zone under control and is a decent shot suppressor.Defenders, especially defensive guys like Holl, are really hard to evaluate, but I strongly disagree.
He has very defensive deployment (44.5% OZF), but has high-end CF%, and gets better than team average offensive and defensive results in unblocked shot rates.

I think Holl is comfortably a #2/3 guy. He's actually become that modern defensive defender that so many people have been really hoping for. A Polak or Hainsey that actually can play the modern game. He leads the entire team in defensive point shares. His weakness, individual offensive output, is not remotely an issue on this team. The things he is very good at -- defending, and moving the puck to the forwards/out of the defensive zone -- are exactly what we needed.
I'm actually surprised more people aren't spending more time praising this guy. He's the defensive d-man that everyone seemed to want.
Holl is absolutely a top pairing guy right now, and has taken on the #2 responsibility on a pair with Muzzin in the most difficult shut down role, and he has succeeded.Holl has been a great find - a guy who can handle top 4 duties in the exact position of need that we got for nothing and was just lurking under our noses. I don't see him being able to be the better player on a top 4 D pairing, but seems to be able to handle the assignments if he has a good partner. I think right now he's a #4, and we'll see if he can handle a bigger role with a really good partner like Rielly.
Dermott carried Holl last night, but I don't think either is a top pairing defender in a vacuum right now, they're getting that chance because of injuries to the right guys on a team that's built through its forward corps.Holl is absolutely a top pairing guy right now, and has taken on the #2 responsibility on a pair with Muzzin in the most difficult shut down role, and he has succeeded.
I'm a historical Dermott fanboi, but Holl is definitely significantly better right now.
PK Subban was a #1 D for years. Norris winner. He needs to get the BS out of his game to take the next step. He's got the mind of PK Subban, always wanting to make an extra move and trying to make things flashier than they need to be. If he simplifies his game he'll be a top four defenseman. If not he'll continue to turn the puck over and won't be trusted to play above the bottom pairing.

Subban seems like a really good comparable for Dermott in terms of physical tools - same size, both very good skaters, both physical. It seems like Dermott is really just missing the bomb shot.Well unfortunately Dermott doesn’t have the physical tools that Subban has. When I said the mind of PK Subban I meant more of the negative than positive, like turning pucks over and overthinking plays.
