If he keeps playing this well I hope they try him on the right side with Rielly when everyone is healthy again.

I think he is good and just needs to be kept coaching him on by Keefe. I thibk he is the guy that you can assign to shadow and shut down i player. Great wheels for that

Why not pair him with Muzzin next year on a shutdown pair? He's got a higher ceiling then Holl, and really as much as I like Holl, he's not a top 4 dman on a contender.
Defenders, especially defensive guys like Holl, are really hard to evaluate, but I strongly disagree.

He has very defensive deployment (44.5% OZF), but has high-end CF%, and gets better than team average offensive and defensive results in unblocked shot rates.

I think Holl is comfortably a #2/3 guy. He's actually become that modern defensive defender that so many people have been really hoping for. A Polak or Hainsey that actually can play the modern game. He leads the entire team in defensive point shares. His weakness, individual offensive output, is not remotely an issue on this team. The things he is very good at -- defending, and moving the puck to the forwards/out of the defensive zone -- are exactly what we needed.

I'm actually surprised more people aren't spending more time praising this guy. He's the defensive d-man that everyone seemed to want.

I've always like Dermy ever since he came up. Maybe it's that infectious smile of his. Anyways, I hope that he progresses well and sticks around for a while.

Holl has been a great find - a guy who can handle top 4 duties in the exact position of need that we got for nothing and was just lurking under our noses. I will say though that he sometimes doesn't feel the pressure well enough and gets caught holding the puck when the forecheck arrives, he did that a bunch last night where he had time to make a play and tried to wait out for something better to open then got caught. When he feels the pressure, I agree with you, skates the puck out of danger and makes good passes, can both enter and exit the zone under control and is a decent shot suppressor.

I don't see him being able to be the better player on a top 4 D pairing, but seems to be able to handle the assignments if he has a good partner. I think right now he's a #4, and we'll see if he can handle a bigger role with a really good partner like Rielly.

Hasn’t been stellar this year but he has really stepped up the past two games. Hardly notice him, and boy does he battle when he’s on.

Holl is absolutely a top pairing guy right now, and has taken on the #2 responsibility on a pair with Muzzin in the most difficult shut down role, and he has succeeded.

I'm a historical Dermott fanboi, but Holl is definitely significantly better right now.

Dermott carried Holl last night, but I don't think either is a top pairing defender in a vacuum right now, they're getting that chance because of injuries to the right guys on a team that's built through its forward corps.

I think if we get really lucky, Holl will be a guy that we can plug in with Rielly to handle top pairing minutes better than they have been handled, but I don't see him being able to carry a Ceci/Polak/Hainsey/etc type partner and have that be an effective 1st or 2nd pairing.

I agree that he's been good with Muzzin, but that's Muzzin anchoring the pairing and Barrie's pairing has a claim to being the top one on any given one of those nights. That leads me back to Holl being good enough to play on a top 4 pairing as the 2nd to his partner, but being very capable in that role, and honestly that works well for us - we have at least 2 LHD's that can anchor those pairings, and we may get lucky with either Dermott or Sandin.

Travis Dermott was absolutely killing it in a third pairing role over the 17/18 and 18/19 seasons. This year has been a bit of a different story, his underlying numbers haven't looked nearly as good, and it seems like he hasn't really taken steps forward. However, you have to remember he had a major injury late last season, missed the off-season and pre-season, and first month of the year, and has had to find his game again amidst a new coach/system, and a constantly changing role due to injuries to the Leafs' defensive group. Overall, I still have a lot of hope for Dermott as a potential 3/4 guy in the future who can play a shutdown role against top guys with his gap control and aggression in the d-zone. I've really been encouraged by his play these last two games, and think that this final stretch and next season will be big steps in his development.

He needs to get the BS out of his game to take the next step. He's got the mind of PK Subban, always wanting to make an extra move and trying to make things flashier than they need to be. If he simplifies his game he'll be a top four defenseman. If not he'll continue to turn the puck over and won't be trusted to play above the bottom pairing.

PK Subban was a #1 D for years. Norris winner.

When fans were most happy with Dermott, he was being extremely sheltered. He's had a lot more praise and scolding from fans depending upon the situation he's been given at any one time. Pretty much he's been a decent enough young defenseman, with learning curves you'd expect.

Will be a top 4d some day just let him learn and make mistakes. No more sheltered usage even when Reilly and muzzin are back.

Well unfortunately Dermott doesn’t have the physical tools that Subban has. When I said the mind of PK Subban I meant more of the negative than positive, like turning pucks over and overthinking plays.
Subban seems like a really good comparable for Dermott in terms of physical tools - same size, both very good skaters, both physical. It seems like Dermott is really just missing the bomb shot.

I don't agree on them as stylistic comparables though, really close to opposite ends of the spectrum. Dermott will make that extra carry move sometimes, but its always to try to open a higher percentage play rather than lob a grenade into a dangerous area, he doesn't seem to have any issue passing the puck when good options are open.

I see a lot more Nick Leddy than PK Subban in Dermott

I think if you had 3 Holl type guys to go along with Sandin, Reilly and Muzzin...you have a pretty good setup going forward. We have offense...we have oodles of it already...getting a D to get you 45pts vs 25pts is not as important as one with a RAPM or plus minus that is always higher on the + side.

I hope Lilly becomes that type of player at the very least.

I don't remember him playing like he downed 4 cans of Red Bull before this season. He seems very jittery and looking to deke out invisible guys with his Gardiner-esque fakes...first of all...they don't work...this isn't the NFL...and when he plays a calmer game without looking to be flashy...he does very well. I am surprised the coaches don't coach that out of him.
