Travis Dermott Discussion

Dermot has really simplified his game.
He seemed really unsure of what he was doing 4 games ago .

Dermot or Sandin are going to have to play the right side next yr.

Dermot and Holl form a really good d.

When Rielly, Muzzin and Ceci come back

Rielly Holl
Muzzin Barrie
Dermot Ceci
Sandin marincin

I thought he was easily our best D man last night and was so poised in the third clearing danger.
I would say that Dermot , Holl and Sandi were better than Barrie.

Barrie scares the shit out of me everytime he has the puck . He is really careless.

Marincin scares me when he has the puck on his stick as well. Hopefully scoring that goal will settle him down .

When we win everyone gets credit, I’m reading how great Barrie was last night. Sorry I didn’t see it, thought he was awful in our end for the most part.

Sad part is that Barrie also makes his partner worse. Sandin is in deep as it stands, when he is paired with Barrie, he is lost.

Dermott is so undisciplined - he could have taken three penalties tonight - which is good because naturally the refs will give us compensation PPs that we can score on. Everybody wins. Except the opposition, they'll lose.

He’s the vet on D, it is sort of maddening how he hasn’t elevated his play. He was fine against Florida I noticed, but was mindless all night against Vancouver and was bailed out a few times. Doesn’t seem to have another gear, he just is what he is....

When Muzzin went down, I noticed almost all the posts were about Dermott, Holl & Sandin needing to step up their games. I don't think I saw one comment about Barrie being the veteran D that needed to lead the young defencemen.

I thought it was rather telling.

Dermott seems to always play better when he gets more icetime. Whenever hes on the third pairing he looks very meh, but when he gets top 4mins and is relied upon hes solid

I think perhaps it could also be attributed to him outgrowing third pairing competition.

Dermott seems to thrive when he is making quick instinctual plays to move the puck. When he started to get too much time he over thought stuff, forced plays or was caught holding it too long looking for the perfect pass. Now against harder competition he doesnt have time so is forced to act via instincts.

Theory I have been thinking of.

He was pretty awful in the Vancouver end as well. His rushing the puck up the ice is painful to watch...he herds himself into a bad situation and then just shoots it in when none of his line mates are expecting it. I would think he is a very hard player to play with..very unpredictable.

Dermott is a fantastic skater with good edge work and agility, but someone pointed it out and I can't unsee it. It's like he's picked up some weird Jake Gardiner skating mechanics where he's always doing these little kick outs and pump fakes for no reason.

That's the one part I really want him to work on. Very careless/reckless player, I can see him being easily goaded into taking dumb penalties. Seeing the way guys take runs at him too I get the sense he's not very well liked by opponents lol.

Hopefully he cleans that up because otherwise he's been excellent during a very important stretch of games.

I always thought that's what Boston does well, refs are loathed to call penalties all game and they will even things up "game management" style so they push the limits of the rules consistently because they won't be punished for it

It's something I wish our boys would all learn and start really pushing the boundaries of what they can get away with, there isn't any downside

Exactly. Until there's real change in officiating, that's a significant advantage.

His strong play at a crucial time is pretty neat to see. Strong competitor. But chippy,

He can cement a good perception about himself the next couple of weeks, and his placement in the lineup.

For most of the season, he looked stagnant and maybe a good chip to play rather than count on. Maybe he’ll change that right up.

I'd say Dermott has been really good for us now that his role his increased. Happy to see him reach new heights now that he's finally getting a chance

He plays on the edge and we need a guy like that on our backend. He has always been a very competitive guy. But he is learning da ropes of NHL defense.

The NHL game management reffing program is Wrong. Just call da penalties by da rule book. That was the way it was. Most everything else in hockey is changing. Why aren't da refs? It is why I hate da CAP, game management, revenue sharing etc all designed to make everyone equal.
