Pretty sure he's the younger brother.
being a UFA signing that wasnt drafted Sergei Tolchinsky is looking like more and more like a steal
Rask is close to NHL at this point, so it's good he's stepping up and playing like it. I think he's a legit nhl prospect, second line player most likely at his peak. His skating is always his weakness but he's strong on the puck and on his skates, has a soft touch on his passes, sees the ice like a good Swedish prospect would, and can take it the net as well. I've used the stastny, berglund comparison before, and I think it still stands. The skating will likely keep him from being a first liner, but he's adapted at every level he's played at to this point. It would be interesting to see he and lindholm together someday. I haven't seen much of karlson at all yet. Would like to see some clips. The fact he's at this tourney is a good sign to me, he must want to be over here.
I had prepared myself to fall for Rask at the U20's this year and watched him pretty closely. I wanted to see what others were seeing in his game. What I ended up walking away with was a player that was incredible at thinking the game, made smart passes but nothing overly creative, adept at making the smart play, serviceable on the boards even by NHL standards, but a guy that could never quite get to where he wanted to be in time to make it happen. And the way I see it is that if you're not skating at a high level when you're 19 with a long frame with low body fat, you're not going to make it work when you get up to playing weight.
I think Stastny is infinitely more skilled than Rask. Had Stastny played in the CHL he probably would have been a 100 point guy. A guy that if he didn't have the misfortune of stepping into the league at the same time as Malkin would have won a Calder trophy. He has taken something of a poor trajectory since then, but he's still the real deal offensively. I just don't see that in Rask.
To be fair, I expected Sergey to rip this tournament apart because the style suits him incredibly well. It's basically shinny. Three lines rolling out and everybody trying to score. Goaltending being what it is at this level and the forwards/defense being a step ahead, there's going to be a lot of offensive creativity. The same reason that Murphy is shining to a degree. It does speak well that these guys offensively aren't missing a beat, but it would be wise not to read a hell of a lot into this tournament.
It will be interesting to see how he fares in the Soo this year, where he'll basically have to do it alone in terms of playing with guys who have a very real shot at NHL futures.
The beat on Rask has never been he wasn't a strong point scorer or didn't have the hockey sense to make it work. His sins are diminished at this level too. I'm not surprised by his success. I don't doubt he will have a strong AHL season either.
Is Lindholm injured?
Any word if he'll try and play today? I recall reading that he was optimistic for your last game, but I see he didn't make it into the lineup.Yes. Shoulder injury/soreness. Apparently still lingering from the prospect camp. Hopefully it's just a precaution but it's impossible to know.
...I may or may not do another report. If I do it'll be on Levi for sure and maybe Biega.
