He's so slick with his hands though. I've seen that before with him. It's like watching Iverson and his crossover dribble.

We talk about how some guys have that change up speed skating in their toolbox. Kakko has that in his puck control.

The camera is horrible. It's blurry and too far away.

I hate the zoom horny f***ers at MSG so much. They are on my list with Nazis, pedophiles, animal tortures and the likes.

This is MSG when the puck is — in the middle — of the attacking zone:

When the puck is down deep, they show half the attacking zone. You can’t even see the Ds and the blueline when the puck is at the center of the attacking zone.

Hockey is about what is happening AWAY from the puck. You never see the Ds in the attacking zone, we miss like half the game.

I would take what we get from Traverse over any 4K feed from MSG any day of the week. You get to the see the game. I’ve seen 5 Ranger games in my life, and then maybe glimpses of a 1000 other ones through MSG.

Hockey night in Canada has a more zoomed out view when we play Montreal and co away. I can live with that but MSG is extremely bad.

Anybody else worried that Kaapo's "illness" might be related to his diabetes and celiac diseases? If he doesn't play Monday I'll be really concerned honestly.
I was going to raise this point. Not overly concerned but a very good reason the Rangers played it safe and gave him the two days off. I expect this might come up from time to time. My daughter has celiac and I am diabetic so I understand and applaud the caution.

Completely agree. Some places have weird angles that already offer an awkward limited view (Florida I think) and then the camera crew is zoom happy on top of it and it’s just an annoying, motion sickness inducing experience. You should’t have to move the camera much or at all for a pass from behind the net to the crease...

I'd rather clearly see the puck and what's going on around it in a 30 foot radius than see a defenseman going for achange or someone sitting at the point... When they can cleanly zoom out or pan to the skaters in real time.

What we have now is terrific.

Didn’t someone promise to provide a link to yesterday’s game? Thank you in advance for doing so. Will make for a good Sunday.

I think seeing the puck is a bit of an adjustment thing. Sometimes I’ve only seen bad streams for stretches, after a while you don’t think about it. Like even if you don’t see the puck, you basically know exactly where it is at any given second.

Shots are harder and goalie work. Sometimes you have no clue if a shot was hard or a knuckle puck.

I am sure they have testing groups etc. But it gets me annoyed because this is clearly one of those things were business people screws the real fans with the zoomed in approach testing better with new fans.

But when you don’t see the Ds in the picture at the blueline you can never tell what is going on. Like they are always involved in the play. Like the puck goes around the boards and you have no idea if we have a D there or if the D has made a line change or backed down before the camera man have had time to follow the puck with the camera. Like I want to see the relevant part of the game, seing the Ds on the blueline while you are in the attacking zone is extremely relevant. The MSG version wouldn’t fly on hockey night in Canada or in Europe.

Think they are shooting them selves in the foot.

So not being able to see the puck is fine but not being able to see the defense is a problem?

Watching now, all thanks to @GeorgeKaplan! The way Fox mohawks to open up shooting and passing lanes for himself is insane. Even with wingers bearing down on him at his own blueline, he is so poised and confident in his ability to get pucks towards the net that he never panics and turns the puck over. It's either on net, or in the corner where a teammate can collect it.

I'm pretty surprised that Robertson slipped out of the first round after watching him play...

No proof but I’m pretty comfortable making a guess that if the Ranger had TBL first rounder instead of second, they still be calling Robertson’s name there.

Yeah..not saying I see a future stud ...but I definitely see a future nhler...and late in the first the chance to get a sure fire 2nd or 3rd pair defenseman is kinda tough to pass up.

I think that that there is an inherent tension in how you broadcast a game that is bound to leave hockey fans dissatisfied. Producers strive to strike the right balance.

Zoomed out lets you see the entire ice surface. Like most hardcore fans, half of me is always trying to see what is going on away from the puck. Zoomed out lets you see the flow of the game.

Zoomed in lets you better see the speed, physicality, emotion, and skill of the game. Certainly, in person it is a different game up close than sitting in further away seats. I’ve been to games in the lowest of the minor leagues where up close, I was blown away by players’ speed and skating. Zoomed in tries to capture that.

The most interesting broadcast I’ve ever seen, it must have been 10-15 years ago, I think in a college game, was where they had cameras on tracks on top of the glass. As players moved down the ice, the cameras moved with them. It gave you a real sense of being in the game, even better than moveable cameras suspended above the ice.

But every telecast tries to strike that right balance. Sometimes it works, often it doesn’t.

A bunch of rankings had him as a late first level player. Very happy we got him, he’s exactly what a defenseman should be in the modern game. Great skater to go with that size plus seems to have terrific hockey sense.

Happened to have off from work tomorrow so I'll be watching the game vs Minnesota and penciling in my thoughts throughout!!

Fingers crossed that Kakko plays!!
