Never shy with your prospect hot takes eh? I think that's a pretty absurd call on Benson and I like him quite a bit. The injury issues also absolutely have slowed his development down. You can't just hand wave them away. I'm just hoping he's well and truly past them now. When he lost his teeth at the prospect game earlier I already had a sinking 'here we go again' feeling.

Well #10-15 picks are no guarantee as well... plenty of those can and do bust so we'll have to see if Benson is able to live up to his full potential, but yes he's that good and has that high of a ceiling. People just haven't had a chance to see that very often recently because of his injury issues.

Bouchard
Yamamoto
Puljujarvi
Benson
Marody
McLeod

That's how I'd rank the current young Oilers (Age 21 and under group on their potential upsides)... now we just have to see if they can reach those max levels.

I agree. One of the few smart Oilers draft picks (rounds 2+) in recent years

Our round 2+ drafting has probably been the best that it has ever been since Chiarelli took over. Its the one thing that I give him props for

McLeod
Benson
Maksimov
Safin

Jones
Bear
Berglund
Kemp
Samorukov

Skinner
Rodrigue
Wells

Not a bad list considering he only used two 2nd round picks in his 4 drafts.

Agree. I'm a very obvious critic of our current GM but there's no denying that the drafting has been better.

I also very much appreciate having the camp updates!

Decent looking players so far imo.... Also Chiarelli has little to do with the drafting of later round guys.... Anyways its about time if the oilers start having a bit of luck in the later rounds

Personally? No he doesn't. But he oversaw a pretty significant overhaul of the scouting department and the change is noticeable.

yup. I do agree that GMs won't know every little thing that happens, but they still get the credit, good or bad. There's lots of bad things that Chia has done, but there is a list of good things too, and he is responsible for our improved drafting record. Mind you, I don't know if that means that Chia is a great drafter. He might be just average compared to the league and I'm just comparing him to what came before here in Edmonton (not a high bar exactly)

What he's going for is a systematic replacement of everything organic that can be injured. Eventually, he'll have mechanical arms, legs, hands, feet, teeth, tongue, etc. He'll be an android on ice, un-injurable.

@nexttothemoon - That's probably worthy of first overall, right? ;)

My big takeaway out in NB is Aberg.
"It's a little different testing than what I've been used to with Nashville," Aberg, who notched a goal for Team B on Saturday, said. "It was a little bit harder with the VO2 and the shuttle run here. That's something I haven't done before."

I like hearing how hard the team is being pushed early. Really drives home how even in the darkness we have substantial improvements. Really, really hoping that coaching is as improved as we want it to be.

Is this confirmed? If so, is he not an option at all, or just needs time to pass the medical?

Most PTO's or contracts are conditional of the player passing a physical. If he is not healthy enough to play then he is not healthy enough to sign a contract. We could still sign him (as is) if we think he is going to contribute to the team when he is healthy, but if he doesn't get healthy we will have wasted one of our 50 contracts for nothing. So most teams do not sign injured players until they can prove they are healthy.

Dont want to go through all the posts. Did anyone have an update on Puljujarvi. IMO he has to take a big step this year.

None of these guys are NHL players now. Until they pan out in the NHL i will withhold the praise seeing as we have one that route in the past praising guys before they even get to the ahl often.

Sorry to be a buzzkill but how can he get props when none of these players have done anything as a pro thus far and even the highly drafted Puljujarvi has had a tough time of it thus far?

Some of the prospects are trending well but IMO, the GM and scouting staff don't deserve any props until at least some of these guys are developed into NHL or even AHL contributors. Right now it's just hopes, dreams and hype.

We're in a weird spot with Pulju. We need him to progress and develop. But because we blew a year of his ELC we aren't going to be able to afford him if he takes too big of a step forward.

Basically we need something like a 20-25 goal and 40-50 point season from him. Too much more than that and we're going to be looking at him looking for a contract we aren't going to be able to afford.
