Not discussed nearly often enough in the media IMO. They just came off a 4-0 win where they dominated every phase of the game to go up 3-1 and Keefe played himself trying to be cute and put Sandin in for Dermott ... cue the game 5 Sandin turnover-fest.
It was a gamble bc Keefe wants to get Sandin a game or two when he could afford. Ofcourse the results didn’t reflect that.
Let’s say Dermott played and Leafs advanced two rounds. Then one of the Dman got injured against Vegas Sandin filled in without playing any games for like two weeks.
I am not saying I agree with what Keefe did in Game 5 but I can see his reasons.

Okay I am a bit more happier now. Basically unless Dermott steps it up soon, Liljegren will take his spot. Personally that same logic should apply to Sandin too, but I'll take it.

Not sure the playoffs is the time for you to try out an option who clearly was not ready...

And how does that end up with Sandin getting in 5/7 of the games, while Dermott only got into 3? Muzzin got hurt, but even if they were doing what you were saying, Sandin should have played less than Dermott.

Hopefully the leash is very short for Sandin. If he continues to falter after 10-15 games, he should be sent down to the Marlies until he can prove he is ready for the NHL... Something he has yet to do.

Like I said, I don’t agree with Keefe’s decision but I see his reasons.
To me, I would send Sandin down till his skating gets better. For Sandin’s size, he should be skating circle around people inorder to be a NHLer.
As I mentioned on another thread, Lil will give you solid plays and might surprise you with his offensive skills while Sandin will give you great plays for 59mins and 40secs and he will get burn by the opposing team in that 20 sec and cost the Leafs the game.

Management definitely view Sandin very highly and are bias in general towards him

I'd assume Sandin is ahead based on GP (and playoff GP). His playoff usage was almost done haphazardly to me though considering he was sometimes on PP1 and sometimes a healthy scratch.

I think Keefe had the conversation with Liljegren that you aren’t on the team to start but you’re not far behind. You will be playing with the leafs this year.

Liljegren is the best bottom pair RD of the three right now. Sandin and Dermott have been good enough to alternate that third pair LD, none of the two deserve the spot outright.

Keefe doesn't have any good will after those playoffs. All his decisions should be questioned.

Engvall should be on the team. The 3rd pairing should be a rotation. No one should have a job solidified.

Preseason can't go much better than that.

All the free agent signings looked legit.

Both goalies looked great.

There's gonna be more than one guy on waivers that deserves a look.

The only loss was the one where the refs decided to hand the Habs 4 PPs in a row to start the game.

And only one injury, to mikky, which may not be too serious and might let us avoid sending someone down that should be up here.

And the team looked like their heads were screwed on straight and that last year is still burning their asses.

I notice nylander played 2m shorthanded today. Any chance he kills penalties in season?

The defense was already set before camp, and Liljegren was clearly set as the #7, so i'm not sure why anyone would in any way be surprised that he won't be in the lineup to start. There was never a scenario where he was going to start with the team, even going beyond the obvious waivers aspect of it.

Sandin will start because he's actually proven himself in games against actual NHLers, not preseason AHL lineups. It makes complete sense. If he doesn't play well then he's non waiver eligible and they swap the two.

he sure proved it in That Montreal game

Engvall looked good today with JT and Willie. Always think he should put in an offensive role than defensive role. Hope he takes it and runs with it
