I think you need to have a good long sit down and think through what "good" looks like

Montreal was extremely average during the regular season

Ottawa were rebuilding

Winnipeg had awful advanced stats and a horrible defense

We curb stomped Edmonton and they were swept out of the playoffs by Winnipeg

I think we will make this year's playoffs in a very good division but the Canadian division wasn't good by any stretch of the imagination
Yup, turns out I am right.

There wasn’t a single other good team in the North division…
That's not really true. It was just a more balanced division from top to bottom; we didn't have a single team below 50 points, and the other divisions each had 2-3. There's also quite the contradiction when people build playoff outcomes up into these incredibly meaningful representations of team quality, and then don't even consider a cup finalist "good".
This is gonna be a huge “I told you so” thread one way or another however I have the utmost confidence you’ll cherry pick some stats to suit your narrative haha
I don't "cherry pick". I've used the same statistics the entire time, and all of the statistics say the same thing.

The only team that was expected to be “bad” in the North last year was Ottawa… and they were surprisingly pretty good (except against Edmonton).

There was only one team with a sub .500 record the year previously and that was Ottawa. It was a tough, extremely balanced division that contained just one elite team and no actual bad teams.

Were Detroit, Chicago and Columbus good teams last year? They all played in the same division and it wasn't the North.

Brooks & Engvall will likely be the final two cuts I assume. I assume we are keeping 7D, which are the 7D on that roster. Unless we send down one of Sandin/Liljegren and bring Menell back up. Regardless, both Brooks and Engvall will need to come off the roster either by waivers or trade.

(Barring some sort of trade of someone like Mikheyev)

The Leafs really passed on Johnsson and Dermott for Weegar :facepalm:
Not that I agree with the trade but from what I understood at the time they didn’t want cap coming back in the Johnsson trade. Weager would look nice as a leaf but I think it would have cost other players also to fit him under the cap still. Maybe my understanding of it was wrong but that’s why I thought the trade couldn’t have worked..

We were a good regular season team in a **** division

Just like Vegas this year, Vegas isn't bad the division is however

That's absolute bull****

The vast majority on here thought we were a good team last season even if some of us thought the division left something to be desired and the vast majority still think we are a playoff team in an extremely competitive division this year

Oh please.

None of you think the Leafs are anywhere close to the elite record they had last year.

That's what the entire "north was weak" narrative is about.

So Semyonov Amadio and Gabriel not actually getting a sniff.

Brooks Engvall Liljegren still in play.

Imo it's up to Brooks and Engvall to play well enough that the team doesn't want to risk them on waivers.

I actually really liked what I saw from Semyonov. Even Amadio wasn't bad.

Someone good enough is bound to be on waivers. They can't keep everyone.

It's possible they put Sandin on the Marlies for a couple weeks and see what happens, while keeping an extra forward instead.

It's a good problem to have.

CJ said that the rumour was wrong. The Leafs offered Johnsson and Dermott for Weager and Florida passed on it.

So from tonight's lineup being considered open day roster then it appears compared to last season final roster.

Out: Freddy Andersen, Zach Bogosian, Zach Hyman, Joe Thornton, Nick Foligno, Alex Galchenyuk

In: Petr Mrazek, Timothy Liljegren, Nick Ritchie, Michael Bunting, Ondrej Kase, David Kampf

Mrazek and Andersen should be a wash

Hyman >> Ritchie
Bogo >? Lilly

People tend to forget we were playing Vesey and Boyd into big situations. Vesey was a top 6 for awhile. They were waived eventually but they had a longer impact than Foligno and Galchenyuk.

So Ritchie, Bunting, Kase and Kampf for Hyman, Thornton, Vesey/Galchenyuk and Boyd. 3 of those are pretty solid upgrades, 1 is a pretty big downgrade.

Foligno just didn't play enough to have any sort of impact and I don't know why he's mentioned.

If @Mess is trying to compare our roster to the playoffs roster, then he should add Tavares and Muzzin to the IN group.

If he's trying to compare it to the regular season roster, then yeah foligno should get removed from the out group. The regular season comp would look more like this for me:

Hyman ------> Kase
Thornton ---> Ritchie
Vesey/Galy ---> Bunting
Engvall ------> Kampf
Bogosian ----> Liljegren
Andersen ---> Mrazek

That super-deep Panthers squad is starting Joe Thornton as its #3C.

You might remember Joe as the guy who was barely holding on to a 4th line wing spot for us last year even while we had injuries.
...and he also played 22 games on the first line as spot duty.

Seems like we're starting the year with 6 dmen.

Looks like they don't want to waive Engvall after all.
