I just don't see what they see in Dermott. Hes 24 now and has shown next to no progress in years.

Guy needlessly spins at the blueline every couple games and people think that's potential.
He has not properly developed that is for sure .. he should have developed much more with Bogo last year .. but we only have 2 defense who can fly and they are Reilly and Dermy .. everyone else is pretty slow

Bunting has played far too well to not earn a look in the top 6.

I agree but I'm 95% sure this is what they're starting with.

I think eventually Bunting will take one of Ritchie/Mikheyev spots but I think that they've promised those two guys a legit shot in the top-6.

Over 200 games played in large, continuous stretches seems like pretty good development. He seems fine and is solid defensively IMO. He doesn't stand out because he's not overly physical, nor offensive, but he's very mobile. He never had top-pairing potential but he may be able to step into top-4 minutes as early as next season by. That's likely to help his offensive numbers. We will see early who's better between the three of Sandin, Lilly, and Dermott.

I'm as big a fan of Mikheyev as anyone. Kulemin was my favourite player and they play a similar style sometimes.

But I'm genuinely confused at how many lineups have him in the top-6. What have y'all been watching that I haven't? He's a big, speedy, defensive player perfect for the shutdown line. It also allows him and Kampf to develop some great chemistry for the PK. In 21 games last year, Bunting got more goals than Mikheyev has ever scored in a season. Bunting seems the perfect complimentary goal-scoring mucker for Tavares.

well, Mikky's practicing on the Tavares line as we speak.

Not going to happen. Matthews wants to play with Marner so that's how it's going to be.

It's not about what Matthews or Marner wants, it's what's supposed to be best for the team. Nylander and Matthews have proven chemistry and give the 1st line 2 lethal weapons and Ritchie as the grinder. Putting Marner with Tavares and Bunting gives the 2nd line 2 scoring options as well for Marner to feed the puck too. Not to mention, Tavares had his career high playing with Marner.

Your reasoning is sound, however you're first sentence indicates a certain naivety as to how things may actually work.

And your post makes the assumption that Matthews specifically requested marner on his wing when we’ve never been presented any evidence if it being the case. As far as we know, this is just Keefe’s preferred combinations

You're not necessarily wrong but your post suggests you have inside knowledge.

I'm not suggesting that you don't but the odds are not in your favour.
