I am thinking Simmonds-Kampf-Spezza can do it.
After the preseason I'd be looking at
Bunting Matthews Marner
Kerfoot Tavares Nylander
Mikheyev Kampf Kase
Ritchie Brooks Spezza
Simmonds
Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
Dermott Liljegren
Sandin
That's a stacked top 6 and 2 3rd lines, one offensively inclined and the other defensively inclined
Im not massively worried about Sandin or Liljegren getting the #7D job just so long as that guy gets plenty of minutes in the AHL so they are ready to go as soon as injury or form dictates
Looks like a prime setup to me. If Kase goes down with injury (probably when) you can insert Ritchie up to the 3rd line and plug Simmonds in. The bottom-6 looks a fair bit better than last year's IMO.
As far as preseason goes...he's far and away the best player on the ice. I'd expect him to come out of the gate flying, then settle in once everyone is up to speed. How's Nylander looking in preseason? Anyone think he can take the next step and become a PPG? He disappointed me last year in fantasy but I still picked him this year - quite late though
Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews takes another step in return from wrist surgery - TSN.ca
Auston Matthews took part in contact drills for the first time at training camp.
"It's a really good step," said coach Sheldon Keefe. "He did a lot more today than we were expecting, frankly. He shot the puck a lot harder today. It's the first time I saw him really leaning into one timers."
------------------
Tavares revealed that he and linemate William Nylander have resolved to get off to a better start this season.
"We've challenged each other to come in this year and really get off the ground running," Tavares said. "He really wants to take on more of a leadership role and make that presence felt amongst the room."
Nylander is among the most skilled players on the roster, but doesn't wear a letter and isn't considered one of the more vocal guys. So, what's changed?
"He just feels that responsibility, it's time for him to take ownership of some of those things and wanting to be involved in a lot more," said Tavares, "whether it's off the ice or on the ice just with the consistency that's needed on a daily basis."
Nylander led the way with five goals and eight points in the series against Montreal in May and has carried that momentum into training camp.
"He looks good in terms of the way he's skating, the type of shape he came in and his mindset and attitude and wanting to be a big presence," observed Tavares. "For him, this has been a great camp. He's looked tremendous so far."
So what exactly has Nylander been doing the last 6 years?
Probably growing as a person and player... growing up...
Too bad it's taking this long...
Yes, certainly let's take this opportunity where our players are growing into being better, meaning our team will likely be better, to spin it in a negative manner. What a fantastic opportunity to be a downer.

I highly doubt they are paying Ritchie that much to start on the fourth line. They'll give him a chance to start in the top two lines. After the preseason I'd be looking at
Bunting Matthews Marner
Kerfoot Tavares Nylander
Mikheyev Kampf Kase
Ritchie Brooks Spezza
Simmonds
Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
Dermott Liljegren
Sandin

He apparently was telling team over summer he wants 3 offensive lines and a shutdown line .. it is a good idea to have 1 speed line in today's NHL I think .. change of pace helps .. and splitting up big 4 over 3 lines really is only way he is gonna make it happen .. I hope it works for him but I personally am not convinced he has 3 lines there .. i think Willy Mik and Kerfoot against other teams third line should dominate play .. it is 1st and 2nd lines which i think are a little weak but we will seeKeefe has been playing 1,2, and 4 on the same line.
I guess he wants a fast line too.
Just Rich Clune, Curtis Douglas, Teemu Kivihalme, and William Villeneuve (but we've also added Eric Comrie, Brennan Kapcheck, Jack Kopacka, and Jeremy McKenna since camp started)Any prominent cuts made yet?
It looks like these will be opening night lines:
Ritchie - Matthews - Marner
Mikheyev - Tavares - Nylander
Kerfoot - Kampf - Kase
Bunting - ? - Spezza
EX: Simmons
Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Dermott
? = Engvall, Brooks, Semyonov.
Bunting Matthews Marner
Kerfoot Tavares Nylander
Mikheyev Kampf Kase
Ritchie Spezza Simmonds
Hosang Engvall Brooks Gabriel Robertson fighting for that last spot.
