... in an ideal world, I'm okay with (Harpur) as a #7. He plays a very simple game and is okay sitting for long stretches

the problem is that jones and/or gustafson need to be the #7 or they will be plucked off waivers

Agreed here. And I'd be just fine with that being the 7 d-men they carry to start the season.
Mackey also Waivers-vulnerable, and had NO games in AHL last season.
(and 10 for Team USA at '23 WC, Drury knew that)
It seems Lavi likes 8 D for practicing(they still have 16 D in Camp)
I could see Harpur waived, and team keeping 8 D to start.
As we are already seeing, someone is always getting dinged and sometimes hurt long-term

Committing to 31 year old Gustafsson instead of 22 year old Jones is stupid. Jones should be given every opportunity to be PP2 QB and pair him with someone who will compliment his strengths at EV.

Gustafsson can be the 7th and only if Jones falls flat on his face do you put Gustafsson in as a regular.

We're afraid of losing Harpur now? Seriously? Harpur??

Rangers can't get out of their own way.

I am vehemently against carrying 8D due to cap reasons

I don't know what to make of Mackey honestly.

What is the purpose of the AHL and players going there and having success if they're not given the opportunity to stick in the NHL as the next step?

Jones and Cyulle deserve their shot. They've both proven themselves at the AHL level.

Jones doesn’t “deserve” shit. He got a “shot” last year and flubbed it. If he beats out Gus, great. He should be handed nothing.

From the interviews I have seen, it appears as though Jones had a bit of a hard time once his start went kind of poorly and it snowballed on him. He lost all of his confidence which, for a player that is smaller and relies on quick decisions to put him in good spots to turn pucks over and make plays, is a death knell.

I'm optimistic for him this season

Yes because gallant was always fair to kids….
This is why the Rangers will never win shit. Half the fan base has the mentality that young players need to blow the doors off instantly. Rangers couldn't even bring themselves to commit to an actual rebuild after sending out that fake letter.

Look at the teams that win Cups, building, letting their top young players grow and lead.

Rangers want to take the shortcut all the time. They want the results without the work and commitment.

At this point I'm just repeating myself and it's not like it'll change anything and they won't ever do the right thing, so there's no real point.

It's easy to forget because of how last season ended, but NYR are ostensibly in win-now mode, whether they should be or not.

So the mandate from Drury will likely be to play whoever is better, not what they might develop into.

He's a shitty defender. That's why he hasn't stuck around. Has nothing to do with his age or size or the fan base's mentality.

I fuc*in' swear if Chytil was buzzin' around with his head down again and got creamed...

Please kid keep your head up. That's his absolute worst quality.

They don't yet trust Jones and I don't disagree with them on that.

Jones has gotta show a little bit more somehow and he's always gonna be struggling to prove he can hack it as a smallish defenseman.

First Mika, now Fil and Bread. It’s been less than a week….

Biting my tongue pretty hard but I have thoughts…
Cupcake practices the last few years and then a long summer with no game situation and high compete contact drills and come back to a coach who runs high intensity practices and is pushing them in camp.

Add in a new training staff that is most definitely erring on the side of caution considering we're two weeks from the start of the season - why rush anybody? - and it's really no surprise there have been some minor day-to-day injuries.

IF (and that's a HUGE gas giant-esque IF) that means the Country Club is closed indefinitely, so be it.

You mean like how they made Miller and Schneider wasting away in the A for years and years?

They’ve let guys who deserve it have a shot

I actually liked Jones more two years ago than I did last year. He may yet blossom into a legitimate PMD at the NHL level but he didn't look like he was ready to do that last year in Hartford and I'd be surprised if he's suddenly now ready.
