So far the Kings look like a team and the Ducks look like individuals. Maybe it is because the Kings minor league teams learn the same system

Or because the Kings know how to draft well, and take players that fit their system over whatever high-skill, questionable attitude, poor team-mate players are still available. Oh and also the Kings know how to actually develop them in the minors so that too.

How are you guys liking Frattin thus far? I've been a huge fan of this guy dating back to his 2009-2010 college season, it's hard not to have a mancrush with all the tools this guy possesses. I hope he does well in L.A.

I think Frattin will do well with the Kings. It's no secret that Lombardi had been after him for a while and that the Kings had scouted him rather extensively in college. I think it's a trade both teams are going to like.

The usual suspects chirping Penner all night:

The Mayor John Hoven ‏@mayorNHL 10h #NHLducks @Dustinpenner25 said there was plenty of chirping from tonight - 'Mostly from @dewyy8 @MRichie_10 Carts and Greener'

Carter for God? Carter IS god.

You know, you may have something there. Initials are JC, tall, quiet guy who wears sandels and lives by the water; best friends with a fisherman, has thousands of followers and helped to performed large scale miracle in the guise of a magnificent Silver Cup ...hmmm....

speaking of Carter, in this month's Hockey News, in the back there is a section where each month, they feature the divisions, teams, etc. and one player from each division is highlighted in a small column next to it. This month from the Pacific, they chose Jeff Carter. He loves LA and playing here ALOT. He said that although he loved playing in Philly, every move on and off the ice is over scrutinzed. (and I an agree with that it's a real pressure cooker) The lack of that here, the freedom to live and work and not be under a microscope all the time is all the diffrence. When the reporter complimented him on having a great year in 2012, he said he felt personally he did well but added that he was disappointed that the team didn't go further and that hurt. He also stressed that he 'really wants to be better this year'.

If he stays healthy and plays all 82, 50 goals, book it.
I'll bet he has 8 before Oct is done.

Looking forward to the season when Kings fans take over The Puddle for a couple of playoff games.

My thoughts...

well, let me start off by saying I only at a salad yesterday for lunch then I got home and drank a cup of Jim Beam and drove to the Honda Center. Actually, my friend drove so don't get all MADD on me. I'm such a light weight these days that after getting to the parking lot and drinking one Torpedo I was pretty much wasted. I ate a nasty piece of pizza when I got inside so that dulled the buzz a bit.

Ok, back to the game. The one thing I kept noticing was how little that Schultz guy does and how big he is. He doesn't skate, he doesn't even seem to touch the puck or play defense. I don't know if I was being over critical of the guy but he literally did nothing the whole game. The Kings really controlled the play most of the game. I don't know how many NHLr's the Ducks had playing but the game looked fairly lopsided and it didn't even look like the Kings players were trying all that hard. They moved the puck around well all night. Carcillo did nothing to impress me. Frattin was getting around the ice pretty well. He had a nice goal but he was pretty much wide open in the slot. I did notice him on one or more occasion and in a good way so that is encouraging. I was behind the net for both Kopitar and Carter's goals and that is such a cool perspective when that happens. I knew as soon as Carter was free in clear that he would score.

Garon was definitely the star of the night. I think he made two saves and played the puck once. The crowd was on their feet for him. Ok not really, the guy did nothing except blind half of the crowd with his gleeming white pads. I paid $20 to sit down low. I love preseason.. it is the only time of the season I can afford to sit down low. There were maybe 10,000 people there and i'd say close to half were Ducks fans. The crowd was rather dull to say the least. I guess that is to be expected.

Glad hockey is back!

I was sitting behind goal the Kings shoot twice at. In the third, I noticed Drew start wacking somebody on the face off and later realized it was him and Penner going at it.

I was at the other end of the ice. I agree with most you said. Garon touched the puck a couple of times to prevent it from going behind the goal on line change dump ins. If it was just the King starters that were were outplaying the Ducks I would chalk it up to experience but the Ducks had last change and only one less forward starter than the Kings. I dont know the Defense players for the Ducks and maybe that was the issue.
Carcillo was worthless last night.
Kopitar played a bit more in the corners to keep a play alive.
There were about 6 guys with Brown jerseys behind the Kings bench before the game. It was kind if funny to see a swarm of him and no one else

Can't find the one I originally had on my HD somewhere which was "I have come to you in your darkest hour to bring you goals" so this one will have to do...

I went to both rookie games against the Ducks and the game last Sunday against the Coyotes.

Sabourin, Andreoff, Weal, and Vey have stood out to me the most through all those games. I thought Frattin had a decent game against the Yotes but sounded like he had a great game last night.

What is happening with Carcillo? Invisible against the Ducks? They had Maroon and Staubitz. At least Clifford put up like 5-6 shots. Cliffy was very physical against the Yotes and looked like a veteran.

Clifford definitely punked Staubitz... again. There was a scrum in the third period and he reached from behind him, face washed him and them dropped him to the ice. They both ended up with minor penalties. I didn't see Carcillo do anything hockey related last night except skate around looking at the puck.

I think part of it is lack of familiarity for Carcillo. The other part is that guys that have been on the roster know the level of play that Sutter demands, and what the style of play the team expects general. It's definitely an adjustment, especially coming from Philly where they don't exactly bring intensity on both ends of the ice. Carcillo may see some ice time at the beginning to give him the benefit of the doubt, but if he doesn't start showing some intensity and effectiveness he'll be a scratch within a couple weeks. Personally I don't see him sticking for long at all, we just have too many guys that are better than him.

Carcillo isn't a horrible bottom-sixer, it shows just how good the Kings are. There are no major holes, just minor upgrades here and there. Run-of-the-mill guys will struggle to find a spot.

Went last night. Here are my thoughts:

Impressed with Frattin. Very strong on the puck and protects it very well. Strong skater with a good smooth stride. Didn't throw his body around like he is somewhat known for but you can tell if he wanted to lean into someone it could be devastating. Great chemistry with Richie and Carter. Frattin's goal was via a gaping hole in the Ducks defensive zone and he went five hole of Fasth but he had him dead to rights when he got that opportunity right up the middle.

Sabourin can play. I know he's young and won't make the team but works his bag off and is very smart.

Pearson is the same as Sabourin. Super smart and makes the little plays that count. He will be one of the last cuts but my guess is by season's end he will be a regular. He and Kopitar had great chemistry.

Toffoli wasn't terribly impressive but is smart and will do fine. If he had got the chances that Carter and Frattin had, he probably would have potted one as well.

Vey looks like he will eventually be Stoll's replacement. Very responsible two way guy, does the little things well. Solid.

Schultz shouldn't make the team. Big but awkward with the puck. Slow. You have your 5 guys (Doughty, Slava, Greene, Regher and Mitchell) that are locks. The last two spots should go to Muzzin and Martinez. Ellerby and Schultz will go down or elsewhere.

Ducks didn't play a lot of regulars and it really wasn't much of a game. I personally think Anaheim is going to struggle considerably. The one thing they needed to do in the offseason was upgrade their defense and I think it got worse. I figured that if Ryan got traded they would get a solid D man in return and instead they got two forwards. They are in trouble.

Mitchell is no lock in my book. I wouldn't be surprised to see him put on LTIR when the season starts. He hasn't played in how long, still no preseason game, if he can't ride an exercise bike for fear of hyperextending his knee, there's no chance he plays hockey again.

This is why the Kings have 9 NHL defensemen in camp right now. None of the extra guys can replace Mitchell, but Dean is covering himself the best he can at this point.

Wow that was a great side by side comparison haha.

Man he sounds like a great guy to be honest though, especially to say something like that after a question about his individual season.

I'm sorry, but some combination Schultz, Ellerby, Martinez, and Muzzin isn't exactly covering the loss of Mitchell.

Without Mitchell, our D looks VERY weak on paper. Put to practical use, under Sutter, in our system, anything's possible, but for God's sake look at this D core w/o Mitchell:

Muzzin-Doughty
Regehr-Voynov
Martinez-Greene
Ellerby, Schultz

Regehr is a different player, Muzzin is Muzzin, and Martinez a question mark. Ellerby has room to improve, I guess, but Schultz is a terrible, terrible hockey player.

Compared to well balanced D cores of the past, the one above is easily the weakest I've seen in a few years.

Sadly, due to cap space, this is probably going to be the best we can do. Pray that Muzzin and Martinez improve...

Willie Mitchell and Rob Scuderi were big reasons we won the Cup. They also play a style of D that no other prospect on the Kings is ready to step in and replace...

Muzzin is a hybrid of an offensive player and a physical player, but the physical play disappeared last year. Mark Morris compared him to Mitchell, yet we rarely see that.

Martinez is a Doughty type of player. Ellerby is a poor mans Sean O'Donnell and Jeff Schultz is a Denis Tsygurov clone.

Gravel is the closest to Scuderi and he isn't even in camp. Forbort is going to need a lot of work and Deslauries is more like a Regehr with skill.

There is no Willie Mitchell in our prospect pool and the closest player to Scuderi is years away.

By the way the Ducks don't have an identity anymore.

When they won the Cup in 2007 they had hall of famers on D in Pronger and Niedermayer, great goaltending in Giguere and Bryzgalov, a checking line of R. Niedermayer-Pahlson-Moen and a scoring line of Penner-Getzlaf-Perry. They also had toughness in May, Thornton and Parros up front.

Where are they today? Nied's and Pronger replaced by Allan and Souray? The goaltending is still good in Fasth and Hiller. The forward group is a mess, it's mostly a lot of aging skill (Selanne, Koivu, Penner) and unproven youth (Etem, Palmeri, Bonino)...no more toughness (Maroon, Staubitz?). I would have never traded Bobby Ryan.

Just having Doughty, Voynov, and Greene make the Kings better on defense than most of the teams in the Pacific Division though.

I expect Martinez to bounce back and despite the *****ing that goes on about Muzzin around here, he is pretty much on a normal development track that is on schedule.

Where's that coming from?

From WM, he said that the day before camp, when the players report to get their physicals and are tested, he elected not to do some of the tests, not to push the knee.
This is his quote:

http://www.insidesocal.com/kings/20...his-knee-rehab-and-being-back-with-the-kings/

[Mitchell didn't go through all of the pre-training camp physical testing and he explained why]. â€Why take the risk? There’s no point. … It’s just not worth the risk. … Lots of ways to go up a hill, right? You can walk it, you can fly up to the top, take a helicopter, you can sprint it, right? There’s lots of different ways. You can crawl, too. I’ve been working really close (with a physio-therapist). They don’t want to ruin all the hard work they’ve done and I don’t want to ruin all the hard work I’ve done all summer. I’ve dedicated myself to making sure my knee was in the right place, getting the right rest, getting the right progression. I’m not going to sit there and go a test just to appease someone that I worked hard in the summer. I know I worked hard in the summer and took the necessary steps. They (the Kings) had no problems with that. They’ve been around. All summer
