I doubt many people here would be stoked to be paying nearly $5 million to a second-line center who barely cracked 0.5 points per game last season like Carolina is.
LA paid Danault over 5 million to be a 2nd line center last year and he was not much over .5 per game. He is also a defensive specialist but was a - player on the year.

And Danault as the second line center was glaringly insufficient against Edmonton, which prompted the Dubois trade to upgrade the center position. There is no such thing as a perfectly constructed roster with all cap hits perfectly allocated (as you are seeing with over 1/3 of the league unable to carry 23 players to start the season).

I can easily see Kaliyev replacing Arvidssons stats with some more icetime and linemates. Arvidsson is the better player right now but he’s gone come TDL or offseason. Kaliyev needs the opportunity. Arvidsson is not that important that he’s pivotal to be kept on that line Imo.

Disagree. You have the high end sniper who can skate and find open spots along with two guys who can get the puck to him . Kaliyev has yet to show he can do any of that [other than shoot], yet. Could it happen , perhaps, but in 137 game he's yet to do that other than very very few occasions. If he the heir apparent, fine , either put him on 3rw and let him grow or send him to the AHL. You can't just put him at 2rw because you think the current guy may not be around come May.

The only thing I’m really upset about in terms of roster construction is the quality of players we have available in net. Who knows, maybe we can just throw any schmuck in net and outscore our problems. Maybe we lean heavily on our top four defensemen and they can make up for it. I have no idea. After one of the worst all-time seasons in goal, we went out and got… Cam Talbot.

Our forwards, on paper, are as deep as they’ve ever been. That can’t be denied. Our top four defense is great too.

At an organizational level, I am concerned with asset management, first round drafting, and player development.

I have not once said the Kings had a perfectly constructed roster like you implied about Colorado, Dallas, and Carolina. In fact, the entire point I've been making is that it is impossible to perfectly allocate all resources under a stagnant cap in order to have a flawless roster (i.e., one without deficiencies). Once again, teams have to make sacrifices (one prominent example being the 1/3 of the league that is opening the season carrying less than 23 players).

I guess some of us just see a much larger actual difference than you do between the biggest noteworthy roster flaws being "4 million dollar 2C who usually puts up 60 points and a goalie regularly in the top-10 in all metrics" and "trying out three below-average goalies and can't decide which one to waive, can't manage roster so losing productive assets on waivers, and no roster flexibility so have to send down better players to remain cap compliant while we keep AHL journeymen on the roster blocking their ascension."

The main criticism of the Blake regime should be about the direction he's taken the franchise (whether or not we should be in 'win now' mode versus rebuilding).

If you think LA should still be rebuilding and focusing on playing kids, I think that's a legitimate POV to have.

But I think the complaints about cap space are pretty exaggerated. Teams in 'win now' mode have cap issues to finagle and rosters they're having a hard time improving because of it. It's the nature of the beast.

So let me get this straight. The Kings chose to be without 34 for 4 games rather than 2?
That's not 100% set in stone yet.

The Kings can still waive a goalie and send him down to the AHL by Wednesday if he clears. Then Kaliyev could be brought back up on Wednesday so he can be on the roster to continue his suspension.

Teams like Vegas, Carolina, Toronto, etc. are teams that have a completed team -- scoring, defense, size/toughness, goalies, etc. Kings in this cap mess and yet they still have no real goalie...still have no size/toughness whatsoever at all. Weird. It's one thing to go for it when you are so close. Another thing when you have many holes that haven't been filled for years and still isn't.

I can't believe it...

Wait, you are telling me the Kings are not yet one of the ‘elite’ teams in the league? It’s been 2 years since they were a lottery team, how much time do they need?! Madness..

For those who don't want to read it, here's the breakdown:
- Spence, Kaliyev sent down to AHL to be cap compliant
- Kings will wait until tomorrow to put Rittich on waivers. They feel Rittich is less likely to be claimed by teams already with a set roster
- Kings will send Rittich down to the AHL Wednesday when he clears. Kaliyev will come up to continue his suspension for the first two games of the season
- When Kaliyev's suspension ends, he'll be re-entered in the lineup. Laferriere will go back down instead of being a healthy scratch.
- While not stated explicitly, it sounds like Spence will come back up after Laferriere is sent down.

So games 1 + 2 will be:
Byfield - Kopitar - Kempe
Fiala - Dubois - Laferriere
Moore - Danault - Arvidsson
Grundstrom - Lizotte - Lewis
Kaliyev

Anderson - Doughty
Gavrikov - Roy
Englund - Bjornfot

Talbot
Copley

Then games 3 on will be:
Byfield - Kopitar - Kempe
Fiala - Dubois - Kaliyev
Moore - Danault - Arvidsson
Grundstrom - Lizotte - Lewis

Anderson - Doughty
Gavrikov - Roy
Englund - Spence
Bjornfot

Talbot
Copley

Maybe they shouldn't be spending assets to "go for it" two years in a row then.

Madness, indeed.

Yea thats why some of the last cup winners had some cap shenanigans to stack their roster by using IR. Maybe Kings put Arvidsson on IR if hes hurt to get a little relief.

but a team can't start the season until they are? like would they forfeit the games?
It's a mix of everything but you are right, forfeit games can be an outcome but the Devils just fielded 17 players after the Kovalchuk signing to make it work.
I would assume Blake just fields a 19 player roster or something.

The commissioner also has the power to nullify the last trade or contract signing that pushed a team over the cap.

As soon as @Kurrilino benches Doughty, Clarke can take his spot.
I highly support this message, also Doughty can be traded as of this year, hif NTC turned into a M-NTC

Excellent - thats what I hoped for to let Laf play and then serve 34 suspension after they get past some of these tough opponents

It's not mismanagement at all to go from Doughty-Roy-Walker-Durzi-Spence-Clarke-Faber-Strand/Stetcher to.....Bjornfot-Englund opening night.

It doesn't matter anymore. I've said my piece.

Fully expect Blake to try to save his job by purging Turcotte/Kaliyev/Spence/1st for some goalie before Christmas when the Kings keep losing games 5-4 and 4-3.
You know what’s going to be the funniest part ? People will pretend that Blake is a magician whenever he gets a goalie for decent value but everyone will ignore the context of why he’s had to make the moves to begin with.
