If Kaliyev doesn't make the team you have to wonder if it's just never going to happen with him and this management team/coaching staff. There are going to be warts with this player that are never going to go away, you have to take the good (lethal world-class shot) with the bad (skating, defense). Plenty of other teams have players like this on their roster, and they maximize the good and try and minimize the bad. If AK is demoted in favor of a younger rookie who has been in the organization for about a half a year it seems the Kings are unable or unwilling to do that.

Kaliyev is not a young kid anymore, this is his 4th year of pro hockey.
I think they will give him a roster spot but put him in a position to fail as they’ve done repeatedly. And once he does, they will use that as justification to dispose him.

If Laf has passed him on the depth chart, I still suspect the org sees Kaliyev as Arvidsson's replacement starting next year.

I hate to attempt to dispel the TM hates Kaliyev narrative, but....

The same guy who thinks that Blake has done an amazing job drafting top end talent. Todd has his head up his derrière. I wouldn’t be so quick to guzzle everything Todd says. But it is you at the end of the day Axl. If Kaliyev lost his spot to MacEwen last year then I think it’s safe to say if Todd has access to a eucalyptus tree then Kaliyev would lose his spot to it.

f***ing the team over before the start of the season

wow if only there were some way to see the cap constraints coming

or even an entire front office position dedicated to it

or even a several forward-looking departments of folks responsible for long-term vision keeping an eye on it

truly unique and unprecedented, you really feel for these guys, what were they supposed to do, not spend over their credit limit?

f***ing the team over before the start of the season. Dean Lombardi would never.

I can't say enough how much I hate the nickname Toddfather. It was funny the first time I heard it, but referring him as that in quoting, articles, etc is extremely grating to me.

Anyway, weren't rosters due at 5 PM Eastern? No other moves announced yet.

Capfriendly still has them at 24/23 and $2.4 million over the cap.

i think that's just todd toeing the company line, maybe with a little hint of honesty. i imagine as a coach it's a frustrating situation to be put into as well

No no no, how could Blake have seen this coming? It's all Kaliyev's fault!

in DB's defense, I don't think TL would grant any more interviews if he started starting him "the marsupial"

The tight cap is affecting many teams, not just the Kings. People are acting as if starting with a short roster is uniquely afflicting the Kings due to mismanagement. Four years of virtually no cap growth has made it difficult for most teams. I guess all these other teams are clowns too?

Spending $8.5m on a player we couldn't afford, as if the cap was spacey enough.

Yet, we're juggling to make things work, overspend on our forwards and underspend on the backend, sacrifice the youth, picks and prospects in the process.

This is bad management no matter how much Kool-Aid you drink out of that Bowlby

This is what happens when you take Jeff Solomon away from Rob Blake and replace them with folks fresh out of grad school. Somehow, Luc found a way to bring in Marc Bergevin and keep Nelson Emerson around. Yet, he wasn’t able to keep Solomon away from the Ducks?

Feels like anyone with a brain is a threat to management.

Out of curiosity, how many of those teams traded 3 players for 1 player with a higher cap hit in the offseason?

There's a difference between needing to give raises to retain talent and needing to fill out a roster, and having self-inflicted wounds.

Edit: realized that the PLD trade occurred one day before the cap was announced.

Making a trade in an attempt to improve the team and strengthen a position that has been worked two playoffs in a row is a self-inflicted wound? If that's the case then that standard might as well be applied to any team that makes any move that makes the cap ceiling tight.

So the answer is there aren't other teams who sacrificed depth, only to realize they can't afford to ice a whole roster?

I'm not going to parse through every single roster move by every team and the prevailing fan board opinion about the purpose and/or ostensible effect of that roster move to try to discern which teams are starting with a short roster because they made choices about shaping their team, which teams are ostensibly morons for trying to upgrade a position, and which teams are starting with a short roster for the hell of it.

Already a quarter of the league is starting with a short roster and not all rosters have been announced. The Kings are not some pariah here.
