The awkwardness is that locker room if they not only strip the C from Wheeler but also demote him from PP1. PP is one situation where his positive impact is beyond debate .

Maybe he can fight it out with Ehlers. I’d expect Nik to be the more efficient scorer on PP1, and he adds a shooting threat there.

IDK where that leaves PP2. Hopefully playing more regularly than they have under previous regimes.

I don't think there is any awkwardness. I can't imagine Blake going into that room with anything but a positive attitude. I'm sure he's excited and relieved. As for PP, we can sure hope that Bowness will have 2 decently constructed units and will play the one that is more effective on any given night.

PP1:
Gagner Schiefele Connor
Morrissey Schmidt

PP2:
Perfetti Dubois Wheeler
Pionk Ehlers

These units would provide good weaponry on both units, and of course if Heinola can draw in somehow you could slide him into PP2 RD and put Ehlers in Gags spot.

Unit 1 could play a more traditional box + 1 that funnels the puck to the point to pull the PK up and open seams for the forwards down low, and unit 2 could play an umbrella to allow Ehlers to slide down into a shooting spot at the circle for 1T's

I don't necessarily subscribe to the loading up PP1 strategy and giving them 90% of PP time. You build 2 strong units, which helps you with extended PP's, games with a lot of PP time (keeps more offensive players engaged and fresh), and also allows you to ride the hot unit. Additionally you can create some fun competition between the two units.

we're all hopeful that there is no awkwardness.

to me, i think the Jets unwilling to retain shows that perhaps they were ok with him being around if it came down to it. if the org knew it was going to be a problem, perhaps they would have revisited the urgency of moving him out & retain on a deal.

not sure :dunno:

if we moved out wheeler we'd need another surefire top-6fwd.

Wouldn't surprise me, he just never took steps forward as a goalie in the AHL.

Just looked way too much like Pavelec to be an NHL goalie. When he was great he was good but man he could let way too many stinkers in

Agree with both of you.

I just noticed that there has been no mention of him since training camp began.

He wasn't even the backup goaltender for either exhibition game.

Purely focused on hockey, it doesn't bother me in the slightest if Berdin goes back to the KHL to play there. It has been years since he looked like a viable prospect.

Holm had passed him on the depth chart apparently so the writing was probably on the wall.

idk shit about our goalie prospects

who has starter potential out the bunch? 50-60 gp at above average sv% (.915?)

Agreed; however, I'll miss this:

He does fun stuff gamely and while his sv% isn't pretty just having him in net reduced shots against significantly due to his puck handling ability. I've seen Pavelec comments but there's a lot more Pavelec in Holm's game than there is in Berdin's. I know goalies are hard to pin down but I'd be genuinely shocked if Holm made it and only mildly surprised if Berdin were to.

It's funny seeing people saying Pavelec-like as a bad thing. I doubt Berdin or Holm come anywhere close, and if they do that would be a huge win for the Jets

It's also funny how whenever somebody compares two players stylistically there's always somebody quick to point out that they're unlikely to have the same career.

I could be wrong, but I think Pavelec only had 2/11 seasons with a higher than NHL-average SV%. He was objectively not good as an NHL goaltender.

Not that I think Pavelec was a good starter but he definitely was good enough to be in the NHL, obviously you ideally wouldn’t want him as your starter.

But good enough to play in the NHL means you’re still a pretty damn good goalie.

Odds are Berdin and Holm don’t even make it to the NHL.

I mean, yeah. Just about every player who makes the NHL will be a pretty damn good hockey player. When compared to the average level of his peers when he played, Pavelec was below average. This is why I said "He was objectively not good as an NHL goaltender."

Personally, when looking at potential NHL goalies, comparisons to Pavelec don't elicit confidence. It's definitely not a good thing. If you told me that our prospect looked like a career .907 SV% goalie, I wouldn't be excited. Maybe as a backup...

Pavelec performed like an NHL backup most of his time here. IMO either Berdin or Holm have the potential to achieve the same and likely get paid a lot less money.
