If he was bad (and honestly I'm just going by what I hear) what's there to trust?

It's more than just play on the ice. And, bad is a general term. JD knows his character and how he carries himself. Martin knows he can translate his message. It's possible Martin uses him as his punching bag to get a message across. Coaches use so many different methods of teaching and motivation.

That last point feels like nepotism. The coach likes a hardworking bad player and brings him with him despite him being bad.

Well, coaches like players who they are familiar with. That's kind of a time-tested thing.

I think they view him a stopgap whose familiarity with the system more or less creates a wash when compared to a player who is marginally better, but unfamiliar with the playbook.

Would they take him over Brenden Dillon? Of course not. Would they take him over some of the other options that were potentially willing to sign with the Rangers for what amounts to a temp job, in an expensive city, that has been at the heart of a pandemic? Yeah, they were.

Character, even if it is a thing is not only exclusive to bad players though.

I think coaches like someone they can point to say and say, "Do you see what he's doing? I need that from you!"

Sometimes it's frank conversations where you say, "Jack over there is 34 years old and doesn't have the speed or tools you do right now. If he can make that play, I damn well expect you to do it as well."

And yeah, sometimes those roles are punching bag. And sometimes its the unknown of whether Miller is ready, or whether someone can catch on on a pinch if they've been sitting on a taxi squad.

Again, I don't think anyone loves the Johnson signing. But at some point, how much of a focal point does one honestly think he is?

Looking at everything we need to fall into place this season, Jack Johnson is barely a pimple on the ass of that body of work.

Well sometimes there isn't a good player who wants to sign with you, for the amount you're willing to pay, and who your coaches and management team from two different organizations agree has something to bring to the table --- even in limited quantities.

I still like to think of things EA style lol, so the Rangers see it is as they took a -5 in overall skill for one player who hopefully only sees the ice 10-15 games, but took a +1 for morale/locker room/coaching. Fair.

Sometimes it's also the concept of bad, better, good, perfect.

Obviously you strive for good, but don't let it become the enemy of perfect.

But sometimes good isn't a clear option. Sometimes it's better --- and that really gets subjective.

Maybe you have a player who is marginally better than Johnson (I don't think the debate was Johnson vs. a good player that everyone agrees upon). The debate was probably Johnson vs. a marginally better player who they weren't as familiar with and didn't know Martin's system.

But the difference in quality is probably not great --- and be increasingly less of a factor if Miller makes a leap.

But why can't they rely on the character already in the room?

Listen folks, I have nothing better to do in my life, so I'm going to take out the frustrations of how much of a big loser I am by constantly shitting on an inconsequential bottom pairing defenseman in every thread, because it's the best use of my time I can come up with! Deal with it!

Who is expecting him to be an immediate top 4?

He's clearly in line to start on the bottom pair if he makes the team at all
Just some posts that I infer from. I think that people can take what a young player is like and translate it into unrealistic projections when it comes to time lines.

But why can't they rely on the character already in the room?

The short answer is they probably could.

I think this was more of a safeguard move that had the "benefit" of being someone they were familiar with and who was familiar with the system they are implementing.

Kind of an "all things being equal, none of these free agents are going to be lynchpins in our defense, so let's at least get someone who doesn't have to learn the language on day one."

Personally, I see some Benoit Pouliot in him, but with a clearer understanding from the get-go about being that type of player.
That is a great comp. I have viewed him as a better skating Brian Boyle.

You mock... but when JJ gets rolled out there in the top four, you wont be laughing.

Panarin-Kane duo was one of the best in the nhl. Not saying Kakko is anywhere near the level Kane was/is today, but the line can work even better than last year.

Yes, as long as Kakko isn't benched for each mishap again. That ate away most of his confidence after a nice start, IMO. Like the game in Calgary where he scored 2 goals, took a penalty and was benched immediately and started the next game on the 4th line.

The only time Miller looks green is when he’s defending the cycle down low. He can get lost. I expect that to continue as a rookie as he learns but he’s probably one of the best pure athletes here. His skating is elite. His size. His gaps are ridiculous just ridiculous. If he’s keeping it simple he’s probably looking like a total stud to everyone. Once he’s in the ozone he can rip the puck with a wrister which is so valuable now.

Like I said the word is if he could have they would have played him in the play in series so really had little doubt he’d make the team.

some guys are just ready. They don’t need the A. Some guys only go to the A because it’s 50/50 and there’s more ice time down there for them. Some guys need to catch up to the speed.

but some guys just can go right in especially if their competitors include jack johnson and Tony Bitetto

Its also the mental part of understanding the D structure and the system. Trouba said it took him all of last year to get it. Not sure if hes the sharpest tool in the shed, but there is always a learning curve there too.

That being said I'd much rather see Miller get minutes and have his expected failures at times instead of JJ who has been around the league and already knows Martin's system, but will likely fail just as much or more.

Kaapo Kakko continues to impress the New York Rangers coaching staff

Nice headline, but not sure what I should think of Quinn saying Kaapo "knows his role on that line". Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but to me it sounds a bit like Strome and Panarin are going to do what they do and Kaapo is there to play it safe and make room for those 2. If that's the case, not happy with that. But like I said, maybe I'm interpreting it wrong.

This is why it would be great to actually see some of these scrimmages so we can form our own opinion.

We will see soon enough.
