I don't think anyone is suggesting Lafreniere get handed the C out of the gate this year, that would be dumb. But I do think that with everything we know about the player and the way he carries himself, it's clear that we're looking at our next Captain.
And that may well be. But that might be a few years down the line.

Agreed. Chris a is a North-South, get it deep and go-to-work kind of guy who doesn't kill penalties or play a big role on the PP. When the team isn't rolling and getting on the forecheck and getting zone time, or is taking penalties, CK can certainly disappear for stretches but it's not for lack of effort like you alluded to.
Kreider plays a HUGE role on the power play.

Most 2nd line players are streaky offensively. That's why they are 2nd line players and not 1st line players.
Except that Krieder is first line.

Look no further to Nash as far as top line players not being streaky. Many top liners get their points in chunks. Eric Staal comes to mind. Franzen. Thorton. Kessel.

Uh what? His net front presence is the reason for many many of the power play goals scored last year. Does it show up on the stat sheet all the time? No... but he plays an absolutely massive role on the PP.

I probably understated his importance, the point was more about not noticing him during games sometimes. standing around the net you wont get noticed as much as handling the puck at the point or walls.

The captain thing is overblown. There are leaders in the locker room and on the ice whether or not they're wearing a letter. Maybe the way the leadership on this team is structured, it's better to not have a captain. Maybe there are several guys who are looked at as the team leaders. I don't think the formal designation of a letter matters very much.

DING DING DING DING DING

It matters a lot more to fans than it does to the players on the team.

Not every good player can be a Mika or Artemi, sometimes people are expecting for a player who he (and most others) are not.

Kreider actually plays a big role on the PP, he’s one of the best in the league in front of the net

but yeah it’s not a role where he’s controlling the puck or flow of the PP

He really does. It's one of the reasons why I'm an advocate of moving to 'awarded' assists, rather than just automatic 2nd pass assists. Too many 2nd assists are given for plays that really had nothing to do with the goal being scored.

One thing that I completely did not anticipate from this training camp was using Barron as a center.

I mean more power to him, if he can stick in that spot great, but I have to imagine faceoffs are gonna be a work in progress for him.

his strength is face offs. It’s why they even use him at center at all in college. Really is a winger that’s really smart and really good at face offs so he’s versatile

Hockey is the only sport where captain discussion is even thought about

that dumb C is super romanticized

Yeah it's like in international football, the captain's armband just gets handed off when the captain subs out (in Serie A they often give it to the player with the most caps for the team, regardless of whether he's a "leader"). When I played in HS, we alternated based on who busted their ass in practice. In the NFL they often alternate captains on a weekly basis and have like 4-5 of them or however many. Baseball most teams don't have a captain. I don't think basketball teams normally have captains. And on and on.

Again, team leaders are team leaders whether they have an official designation or not.

.

hmm, i figured there was no way the Rangers wouldn’t try him at center considering how few centers they have compared to wingers.

I think that’s one of the things that gives him a really good chance to shake up the lineup - he can push guys at two positions.

Heading into this camp, there were two guys who Barron was expected to push - Howden and Lemieux.

I think Barron is going to get his chance to really make his case.
