Every year the goal is to be at least a playoff team. Anything can happen. Especially in a shortened season if the team gets hot. But they are far too young and not battle tested enough to be a serious cup contender. 2nd year coach, tons of rookies and young players and a coach on his 2nd year. Hardly a favorite for the cup or even the eastern conference championship but like I said anything is possible and a team could get hot and go on a run. But there are too many question marks for them to be considered a serious cup threat

I never considered them a serious cup contender though.

How will DeAngelo be able to handle receiving passes in the defensive zone?

And the dump-ins really scares me. Look at Gostisbere. These guys get shell shocked.

You are at an disadvantage when you fetch a puck in the corner on the ‘wrong’ side. Teams will exploit any disadvantages of opponents. Hence it’s x-fold. It’s not (only) about quality of forehand vs backhand, it’s the movement to get there. On the correct side it’s the most natural movement to retrieve a dump-in and turn up ice. On the wrong side you got your back towards the ice with two hands on the stick turning up against the ice.

We have tried this so many times. McD and Skjei played RD effortlessly in college. Much more time and much softer forecheck. It was a mess in the NHL. McD was hammered.

The quote from Quinn on naming a captain makes it sound like they don’t plan to name one. If they were gonna make Mika or Kreider captain it would have happened by now

Seems pretty clear they’re holding it until they think Laf is ready
Theres just no way on Gods green earth "they are holding it for Laf". And for how long? Yeah, put more UNNECESSARY pressure on the kid.
Like being taken #1 and the expectations that come with THAT, along with playing in the greatest city and biggest market in the world.

Even besides that......how does or would he deserve Captaincy?
That would be a slap in the face to those who deserve that HONOR. Sorry, where I come from you EARN that within the locker room and being a force in the NHL for some time.
Who in the hell is going to respect and LISTEN to a 19 year old?

Landeskog was named captain at 19-years-old after completing one NHL season.
So that would mean that Laf is Landeskog's twin? One case out of a million and needless to say, not everyone has the same makeup. Im not against this kid, very excited in fact it is just that I believe it would be just "too much" and could do more harm than good. If Kreider got it, Zbad would be okay with it.
If Zbad got it, Kreids would be okay with it. Respect for one another, been through the mud for some time now. Imho.

Baby steps. Albeit brief, but that 3 game toasting we got, should serve like an hors d'oeuvre.
We're obviously NOT ready, but with lots of hard work and determination......somehow, if we could get in......THAT would be the next course. A small taste for Laf, maybe k'Andre and the likes. "What it Takes".

With all this talk about Smith, could anyone with some systems knowledge tell me what kind of D Martin runs?

Dom L's projections seem to peg Smith as one of the worst D in the league, but wasn't Smith borderline elite at denying zone entries prior to his Rangers tenure? Will Martin's system play to his strengths? I'm really hoping we don't collapse and surrender the blue line like we've been doing under both AV and Quinn. I'd rather stifle opportunities before they equate to zone time and live with the fact that we'll occasionally get burned than surrender the zone and get pinned for long periods of time.

If we’re not giving captain to Laf yet, and we had to make a decision, I don’t see how you don’t give it to Mika. I really don’t understand the Kreider for captain argument at all. He’s always been a quiet guy, and yea before you say lead by example, so does Mika....so what else does he bring to the table besides soon being our third best left winger?
You are not giving a 19 year old the captaincy of a team.

Krieder is a legit top liner in the league. He is a leader in the locker room and the young players swear by him. I have said it before and will say it again. Right now, Panarin is the team's best player, ZBad is the most important and Kreider is the heart and soul. He is as qualified as any to be captain of this team. Whether or not he is, is a different debate. I think that there is no one wearing the C for this year.

Don't forget that we will have goalie back there now that can ACTUALLY play the pucks unlike the King who was always below NHL grade in that dept I figure . It will help our D .

While this can be and probably usually is the case, what’s your answer to Landeskog, Toews, Crosby, etc. who were all like 19 year old captains.
Sure, but I think that we can all agree that those are the exceptions and not the rule

I find it hard to take projections on Smith very seriously when the majority of his recent data is from playing as a forward last year. His defensive results were poor last year too but that can obviously just be because he was moved there late in the year after playing/practicing as a forward for months.

Bruins are vulnerable in a short season. No chara Marchand and pasta banged up. No krug. Those are big losses.

Pittsburgh is hardly anything special. Yes they have Crosby and Malkin when healthy but they’ve struggled

Washington is getting older and we have played them well. Not impressed.

Philly is going to be good AV teams are and they’re a bad match up for us. They feed off turnovers.

islanders have less talent than they did they’ll be a tough tough team but barely squeaked into playoffs. We will compete with them for a spot.

devils suck

sabres suck

Now that we have elite goaltending we can do some things again. I said it last year when Igor came up and that will hold true.

Our defense is still mediocre with a left side that will be the real weak spot of this team. I'm also not convinced we will see all 4 of Panarin, Strome, Zibanejad and DeAngelo replicate their career years they had in 2019-20. A lot has to go right for us, while things need to go wrong for others, for us to finish top 4.

I wouldn't bet money on it but I look forward to be proven wrong

say what you want about him showing up, but I will take his regular season stats every year, since he shows up when it matters in the playoffs.
Is he streaky? Sure. Is he a legit top liner? Also sure. Many, many top players were notoriously streaky. That is what separates top from elites.

Crosby and Toews would like a word. Crosby was a shade under 20, Toews a shade over 20 when they were named captains. Both led their teams to Cup wins within a season of being named captain.

That still does not change that such things are the exception and very far from the rule.

This concept of TDA on the left scares me a little. The guy is really good offensively but often struggles defending. What happens when he is put (i) on the first pair and additionaly (ii) on the left side? We will have to wait and see I guess but I certainly hope that at least one of our our left side prospects is ready sooner than later.

Landeskog was the youngest captain for a while until McDavid "beat him"

I could be wrong about Landeskog, but those two other teams were absolute dumpster fires when they named a 19 year old captain.

The Rangers have had every opportunity the last few years to name Kreider or Mika captain and they’ve chosen not too

should give you a hint on what their thought process is on naming a captain lol

Hank and Staal were still here, Kreider was set to become an UFA at the start of last season. This is really the first year of an entirely new persona for the team.

I think they didn't name one of them captain, because Hank was the team leader but you can't name a goalie captain.
