Trading Zuccarello was a mistake

My family is from Norway. I was raised on the Tolkien books (Frodo from Modo). Having him on the Rangers was great! I truly and thoroughly enjoyed rooting for him!

All that said, trading him was the right move. I do wish him well, he loved being a Ranger, took a team friendly deal to stay and was a loyal soldier. I know he was disappointed to leave.

I wouldn’t change anything though.

zucc was the catalyst for the rangers during the vigneault years. but once that spectacular run was done it was time for a new coach and a roster renovation. i'm surprised that dallas didn't retain him.

just got to move on. if your'e a zucc fan like i am just enjoy him flourish with the wild.

Zucc enabled a lot of lazy offensive zone gameplans and play because of how good he was on the walls and *routinely* winning 1 on 1s and 1 on 2s on the forecheck. It's a longterm net negative to *rely* on those kinds of exceptional individual efforts because of when they inevitably fail; see Zibanejad, Mika this year.
I like this point because this is inversely what makes Panarin one of the most dominant players in the league is his ability to singlehandedly elevate every other single player that touches the ice when he's out there.

Definitely an interesting point you make though.

Those picks turned into Robertson and Tarnstrom, right?

We were an game 7 OT goal away from getting the Stars 1st rounder. They kept they pick and took Thomas Harley.

so close ... it really was a descent trade

Robertson looks good. Time will tell on him and Tarnstrom

Hard not to like players like Zuccarello but when you're highest scoring threat is a 55-60 point guy chances are you've not got a great team. Since the Rangers decided to blow it up and retool/rebuild pretty much everyone with the exception of Kreider have moved along. Many of those that moved including Zucc and Henrik didn't seem to me anyway all that on board with the new direction the team was taking. The fact of the matter is though those Zucc and Henrik teams never got it done and weren't going to get it done either. Their window closed.

Where we are now IMO is a much better place--the Rangers have arguably the best young lineup and prospect depth in the league. Have all our moves worked out? No but that's par for the course for how things like this go.

Imo looking back the mistake that was made was Miller and not Zuc, Hayes etc, but even Miller himself said the two trades woke him up and made him realize what coaches were telling him so maybe he isn't what he is today without the moves.

Glad we traded Zucc when we did. Also glad he’s doing well this year. I know we didn’t trade him to the Wild. But I always prefer a win-win result. In the long run it’s better.

Yep. Fortunately, the front office came to this conclusion before the fans did. I think the building blocks we have now are better than back then.

I wish we still had Zucc but the economics and his age don’t fit this team. I have no regrets trading any player we dealt over the last few years. However, the return for Zucc should have been more than a 2nd rounder.

I understand getting slapped in the face is normal if you yourself force the trade through the players wanting it (the infamous Tampa trades) and the open NYR fire sale*. But this? Zuccarello wanted to stay and this was the return. I understand people say it was the right thing to do. Well, I'm not so sure about that.

*The description of the NYR fire sale, cleaning the team of quality players for peanuts:

McDonaugh and Miller to Tampa to solidify their legacy while we got the stuff back you get in your palm if you stick your hand out under your butt, while taking a shit. If NYR wanted to give Tampa a fine back rub to multiple cups, fine. But cleaning out those who wanted to stay? I still feel like I want to vomit about that.

Oh, yay, the team can barely reach a 50% win rate if they play the Devils most nights. Such huge steps forward. Getting owned by the Islanders. Huge progress.

Am I drunk, again, on another Covid sunday? Well, yes. But this time I think(?) I've toned it down a little. And I'm not AS drunk as yesterday.

Is there a point here other than enthusiastic whining?
The Cap got in the way of Zucc being re-signed.
Either of that trade's conditions would have much improved the return, both had reasonable possibilities.
And the Cap led to McD trade, which despite the fun poop joking above, has not been the disaster that impatient folks here love to frame it as.
Maybe i am the blind one, but i dont get how folks, who seem to want NYR to succeed, dont think the rebuild is working. And why are this season's results the benchmark, the rebuild takes time.
If the last few weeks, and the play of young guys Laf, Fox, Lindgren, Chytil, Kappo, Gauthier, and yes even Howden (no O but great PK and decent forecheck) and Hajek (been much more effective since recently in the lineup), doesnt encourage fans about team's direction, i dont know what would...

Any way, fire back with overheated nastiness, its ok by me.

We'll see. The reason for my whining? Because this path will stick NYR into the infamous bubble team range. They won't be able to succeed in the playoffs - if they get there at all, which they usually won't. The reason I'm whining is because the return the Rangers got for the pieces shipped out was quite pathetic all over. That was other franchises taking full advantage of an open letter of a rebuild in full force.

They will maybe have a chance in 5-10 years. It should've realistically been in 5, but because of the awful trades, it's more likely to be 10. Sure, you can glare at the nice gold pieces. The core will still be inadequate and NYR will be in effective 9-12 range, which is the worst range.

Hot take alert!
Yes, I know I'm out swimming here, but at least I get a conversation going. I'm entirely open for that my entire train of thought is garbage from the start. If nothing else people will have someone to throw stones at. ;) It's fine, I'm not a prestigious person.

If I started digging a shit pit, I might at least finish the job. Just a couple more shovels to go.
