That team does not care about keeping players because they wanna stay. They churn players to always stay a step ahead in assets and value.

They'll have hard decisions to make but I'd assume they'd have no problem trading McNabb and Karlsson for picks/prospects/value.
I agree they are ruthless in their pursuit of the holy grail....

Everyone one else..."its hard, theres a cap, we are not moving any of our prospects or our 1st, you need a dance partner to make something work"

Vegas..."hold my beer"

I can see them moving Karlsson. He’s someone I’d definitely have interest in given he probably wouldn’t cost too much since his contract runs pretty long. I think he’d be a perfect fit in that second line position with Bertuzzi and Nylander.

That might work in the regular season, but when things ramp up in the playoffs their inexperience will be exposed, not many rookies thrive under that kind of pressure, but it wouldn’t be the first time the Leafs have thrown rookies to ghe wolves……..

When is the last time the Leafs actually iced a line-up of good rookies ... when marner was a rookie.

What happened:

Maybe Tre is: this season we end up wherever. Same philosphy next year. Then build to win the Cup after next year when Tavares is off the books and we still have the other Core Three signed for a couple more years following.

So write off this year and next. Prepare for when Tavares contract expires, then go all in whatever it takes.

You don't treat your captain like that. Doing so would destroy their ability to sign free agents because nobody would want to play for a team that treated people like that.

I keep saying I want them to piss Marner off so that he waives, but that is just frustration talking.

I don’t agree. Vegas would move on from any player with a drop of a hat. Everyone said the same things about them but players still want to play for them. Tampa did a similar thing with McDonagh.

Location and money are the two most important factors for players. They don’t care about how the last guy was treated.

A far cry from the bullshit narrative Shanahan spewed about the team being a cup contender every year

Am I the only one who wants to see whats this core can do with a new coach in Craig Berube and a new system, as well a two to three new defenseman, and a better supporting cast. We have the cap space to do it this off season.

I don’t want to sound obtuse, but they are professional athletes, ond of ghe reasons they’re paid so much is they’re treated like commodities and commodities get traded everyday. Brodie’s a perfect example, his wife’s sick sick MS so a compassionate action would be to not trade him, but that’s not the best thing for the team, maybe for the player, but definitely not the team……

So do the same thing for the ninth season with a new coach? Berube’s a good coach, but as much as I despise Keefe, he’s not the main reason this team is a playoff failure…….

Berube seems like a good candidate if there's a coaching change. His playoff record is pretty average outside of winning the cup with a stacked Blues team but he was well liked there for awhile.

He doesn't hold everyone accountable, he started this you buy to me it is to laye for him.

Berube would And treliving would be behind
The dzone needs to be cleaned up.
I hate those back passes 80% of the time they don't work.

They need to get the forwards coming back and not blowing the zone early.

Patrick Roy would have been a great coach you snooze you lose.

If we trade Kampf and Cowan makes the team next year, we'll have $24.5M in cap space. Treliving can make a numbers of meaningful and impactful signings. Let see how the core response to a new coach and a new system with a better Dman and a better supporting cast.

If the core still fails, the good news is Tavares contract is off the book.

I think 90+% of the time it's as simple as this. A guy isn't going to turn away toronto because they move the captaincy from tavares to Matthews.

Has he proven he is the solution?

Seriously, who cares about Keefe if the goal isn't to try and improve the team by whatever means are possible.

Let's just keep focusing on the players and maybe they'll play better.

If there was no such thing as NMC the discussions about changing the best players on the team would make sense.

We might as well, suggest trading Matthews for McDavid, marner for MacKinnon, Rielly and Nylander for Makar and be done with it.

Tavares stays though ... :biglaugh:

I can't figure out if this post agrees with my opinion or not.........

it's common knowledge TML treat players like gold, country club atmosphere, only downside is the media and it's not a tropical climate..........

? The team has it's core locked in - it's now or never every year they are all here. I would have liked him to do more, yes. Would I have moved Cowen? No. I would have moved the 1st rounder for sure, depending on the deal.

You argued he "didn't believe in the core..and hopefully has the authority to change it".. he clearly believes and has the authority since he signed Nylander to an uber rich contract when they could have waited. Or are you arguing he's only allowed to sign these guys and not trade them because he's some sort of puppet?
Signing Nylander was not changing the core. Shanahan came out last June and said they still believe in the core and will be bringing them back. They had a window to trade Marner whose NMC didn’t kick in until July 1st and Willy who had a limited NTC until he signed his new contract but clearly Treliving couldn’t move them with Shanahan taking that position. If they get knocked out in the first round again it will be clear to me and many others that this team is unbalanced with too much of their salary cap spent on regular season stars who don’t play well ebough in tighter checking playoff hockey so changes should be made. Will Treliving with or without Shanahan at the top (my hope is Pelley fires his ass) have the authority to try and make changes to the core (read trade or not re-sign Marner on July 1st) or is that decision above his pay grade ?

well he's got 8 years to regret thst move, not that I think it was Tre's decision..........
Agreed. It was Shanahan’s.

Yes

Patrick Roy would have been perfect
He is a high profile that would trump our core 4
He also installs great systems defensively and he is used to working with young players
We snooze we lose

Quinnville. Enough time has passed.

I think that might be it if we don’t get far in the playoffs. Let’s see though.

I think people have to come to terms with we are going to rotate supporting casts over core parts.

Even JT who I know people want to move on from, will eventually realize, he’s coming back with a shorter and cheaper contract than he currently has unless he retires lol

Agreed. It was Shanahan’s.
The move to make was to trade Marner for M. Tkachuk. That guy is what the Leafs and Florida needed to get them to the next level. If MT was willing to come here, not only did we not get him, but we also allowed him to go to Florida (same thing with Bennett). And here we are, looking up in the standings and will be lucky to get to round #2 to face them.
