I haven't heard anything along those lines for Hyman, so it seems like a stretch but maybe I missed it
Team was unwilling to go to 8 years for Hyman, that’s been pretty much reported widely. They were comfortable with AAV. They were not willing to go 8 years. They wanted a short term deal. If they were comfortable with it, Shanahan would have given approval for that to happen and not let Dubas walk him to free agency.

Knies. Matthews. Marner
Bert. Tavares. Nylander
Domi. Dewar. Jarnkrok
Holm. Kampf. Reeves

Rielly. Lub.
Brodie. McCabe
Edmonds Benoit/lilly?

Is that the plan?
Without Lily who probably plays himself off the playoff lineup, we have one RHS dman. I was fully expecting Tre to acquire another RHD, instead of or in addition to Ed.

I'm pretty sure that was Kyle's decision

Craig Berube?
Always liked him, a better option than Keefe imo, but the idiots extended Keefe when they should have made him prove he’s worth a extension……

Vegas is in a no lose situation. They know their guys can win so they take a crack at it. The Leafs still don’t know if Matthews and Marner can do it so they can’t take the same chances.
How many years does it take to figure out this core can’t get it done? Asking for a friend…….

Pretty annoyed with this deadline. This team is a lot more than a 4th line center and two 4-6 defensemen away from taking a run, and if you believe that to be true then why even bother moving out picks for expiring contracts?
Edmundson/Lyubushkin are around the edges type of additions you make to teams like Vegas, Boston, Colorado etc to deploy as their depth 6-7 guys. Not players you add to play in the top 4, more assets moved for a couple of players who will walk again in UFA.

Organization are terrified to attempt a big swing, mid season or off season. It's always these underwhelming trades where the club can say "well we tried."

? The team has it's core locked in - it's now or never every year they are all here. I would have liked him to do more, yes. Would I have moved Cowen? No. I would have moved the 1st rounder for sure, depending on the deal.

You argued he "didn't believe in the core..and hopefully has the authority to change it".. he clearly believes and has the authority since he signed Nylander to an uber rich contract when they could have waited. Or are you arguing he's only allowed to sign these guys and not trade them because he's some sort of puppet?
Without going too far down the puppet path I think the decision to resign or trade Willie was always on Shanahan and all Tre could ever do was present options. Now I firmly believe if Shanny had an inkling the guy would not take less than Pasta+ money he would have been dealt this summer but there wouldn't have been any indication until at least after the NT kicked in. Then if Willie had the right teams on his list of 10 (the ones most likely to make a deal) he effectively reduces the dance partners to a just couple of contending teams so no bidding war and no monster return. No windfall return and suddenly an overpay of a million or so doesn't look like such a bad option.

I don't know that Nylander's ask would have been reduced by waiting, this was clearly a career year and his demands were kind of based on that he was now this "Pasta level" talent. We heard back then it was $10+ for sure but nobody knew how much plus and then he is top 6 in league scoring instead of top 20 and the Leafs were done. It will be the same with Marner because this is Shanahan's team and vision, not Trelivings yet. A puppet for sure I suppose, because Dubas was replaced by a guy the Prez hired to execute his plans which have included the overpaid 4. He did not hire Tre to stray from the path that BS had been telling the board they needed to be on for the last 5 years. There is a difference between following the directions agreed on with your boss, vs taking the helm of a ship where you have no real control in the course. Until Shanahan is replaced by someone not invested with approving all the decisions of the Dubas era, his GM will never have freedom to build in a different fashion.

The last big swing was JT. Now everything is just triage until they are rescued by cap growth.

Treliving getting carved by Button and Mike Johnson lmao
The need attention
I showed my daughter when wendel went after mcsorely and when Tucker attacked Neil on ottawas bench.

She had never seen anything like it before, her jaw hit the floor, she smiled so widely, and she said “hockey used to be SO COOL! Is this before they invented safety?”

I said, “yes sweetheart, it was before they invented safety. Have you ever seen goalies fight? Check out potvin here….”

I want a team like that again, skill, grit, heart, zero f***s given, a team like the bruins or the panthers or the knights.

You know, the good f***ing teams?

The good old days. The pieces Tre has added has made us meaner, but we’re never seeing this again. Domi taking on two flyers at once was my fav.

If Dubas didn’t sell the farm year after year, and if the Amirov tragedy didn’t happen, we might have some young and hungry players ready to step up right now

Maybe even some defensmen
When you use picks to acquire and retain rentals at the TDL and to fix the many mistakes, you eventually run out of picks. Tre just blew out 5.

True, but those ones are easier to recoup before the draft than 1st and 2nds are

I think the league is swinging back a little bit towards this.

It’ll be on the players to make it happen, but I think this can return. Under the right circumstances.

People my age have kids working their way into the NHL right now, and in the near future. Hopefully they are teaching their kids to play the way their favorite players used to play.

The 1st he gave up to dump Marleau hurts. As Kyper says he should have sucked it up and kept Marleau or traded AJ and/or Kappy. A parade of mistakes while he was here and now we might be watching Vancouver, Edmonton and Winnipeg get further than us in the playoffs.

You see how hard it is to get a top pair RHD via trade, I think the Leafs have to go all out this summer to sign one of Roy or Pesce.

If our d corps is healthy, where do these guys slot?

Add to it we lost Lagesson to bring these 2 UFA’s in, and yes, sorry, knowing that we were adding nothing else, these guys don’t get us anywhere closer to winning in the 1st round.

The only benefit is I don’t see use getting manhandled again. Still losing but less beaten up.

Is that the goal?

I guess we will see. The lineup is for Keefe to sort out. Our PK is going to sink us in the playoffs if not addressed and both these players can help us there. They also bring a physical, net front clearing presence we don’t have enough of. These were big needs even if the players are not otherwise big additions

Sounded like they were willing to do 8 years from what I recall but not at the current AAV

Hopefully, they will add a 2nd or 3rd to the '25 draft. Teams like Arizona and Chicago are sitting on a mountain of picks, so getting one (or more) from them would be nice.

Also, looking to add via euro/NCAA fa should be a priority with such few picks.

I feel like the big change is getting a new coach. It did wonders in Edm. With the cap space this summer to get a new defenseman and a new system, maybe this team can feel different with out trading our core players.
Eight years running and I haven’t seen any change as far as the core is concerned which is concerning to say the least…….

What is the sense of keeping Lilly and Robertson. They will prove nothing as Keefe will keep their asses in the press box. Keefe is not the coach for this team
