Actually, the runway on Rielly is only next year. That’s why management needs to make a decision.

Thus my Jones for Rielly potential trade in the other thread..

Rielly and Jones are both similar age both will be 27 by new season start .. Both are signed for 2020-21 and are UFA 2021-22 and both make similar in $5 mil AAV for MO and $5.4 mil Seth.

So with these being the principles in a trade this works on many levels #1 Dman for #1 Dman and it appears both teams are in a situation where they must decide this year to prevent a UFA situatonj next year.

The thing is next years UFA D men class is very stacked, so even if we did lose Rielly to free agency we would likely have many options as to replacing him. That being said I doubt management will struggle to re-sign him. Sandin being top PP could change things though, could force us to go for a more defensive dman than Rielly.
This is why it's important to get Sandin and Liljegren NHL games this year. If both do well it really takes the pressure off when it comes to replacing Rielly.

If they falter then you either need to re-sign Rielly or pursue FA.

Yeah part of the issue of Sandin doing well on top PP is we will have to sign him to pretty big dollars as well...So even if we let Rielly walk Sandin could get similar dollars to him and be in a more sheltered role. This is why trading Sandin should be an option looked at as well, although we would need Rielly to improve on the PP.

That would be a great deal for the Leafs I heavily considered that earlier on. But I came to the conclusion Colombus has no use for that deal, they would want forwards/futures back in a Jones trade. They have Werenski as their top offensive D they wont want a rental Rielly.

I think a more realistic expiring d man trade is Klingberg for Rielly. That fits both teams needs a little better potentially even though I would rather have Jones Klingberg would be nice for our PP.

How does this help either team though? Won't they both be in the exact same situation they are in now?

Doubt u get a better offer 1 for 1 than rielly for a dman that wants out.

Trading a UFA for another UFA doesnt really prevent a UFA situation.

You need to trade or sign Reilly now. It’s completely unacceptable to allow him to go to UFa for nothing and bank on the Leafs signing someone. If that’s the case and the Leafs are eyeing someone, trade Reilly for them now (or trade for them and then trade Reilly) and sign them long term.

Surprised people think the solution to the leafs problems is another high AAV contract...

I think Dubas might intend to go down with the ship. I.e. make some slight changes but roll with the same core and hope 6th time lucky or whatever

I think Hamilton's play is the product of being on the better team, especially the last couple of years playing for Carolina. Seth Jones' and Dougie Hamilton's regular season points per game are comparable (Hamilton slightly higher), but Jones' playoff points per game is significantly higher. If Jones could be signed for no more than $7.5 million per ($7 million per would be amazing), it's a much better contract than Hamilton at well over $8 million that he's looking for.

Carolina took a big step forward after then Hanifin/Lindholm for Hamilton deal though.

Another high AAV forward wouldn't make the most sense, but we need to stickhandle around the Rielly UFA situation in a proactive way.

I'd take Hamilton but wouldn't get too hyped up on Goodrow or Coleman.
i just think we need some guys who make life miserable while playing a solid game. We just have none.

Also this HAS to be a culture problem where players come to toronto and become neutered. Simmonds and foligno both played like p***yes. It is weird.

I really like Goodrow and Coleman as players but I think pro scouting would need to go find the versions of those guys who haven't broken out yet. Like Alex Formenton or something like that.

If you could get Dougie for 7x7 and Hall for 6x7 then deal Marner for LaFreniere that would be the greatest offseason in Leafs history.

Then if you can trade Rielly for a cheap replacement like Broberg you'll have money for depth.

LaFreniere - Matthews - Nylander
Hall - Tavares - Hyman

NYR already spending insane money on Panarin...why they adding another big ticket at wing?
