So who do we think are realistic trade partners in a Marner trade?

I think LA makes a lot of sense. They won’t move Byfield but I would love to nab Turcotte.

My big 3

LA- tonnes of assets, have the cap space, have the right mix of forwards to fit him in.
Kempe / 2021 8th overall, Vilardi, Byfield, Turcotte / 2022 1st, Lizotte, Kupari, Thomas, Moore
Ideally Kempe plus one from each group, but Kempe plus 2-3 from the 2nd group wouldn't be the end of the world


Buffalo- tonnes of cap space, looking for financial efficiency, having trouble keeping players. Marner's term and salary to cap hit should be quite attractive to them, could either be a sales pitch to keep Eichel around or a flagship star to soften the blow of losing him.
I'd look for Reinhart+ and give him the Nylander contract


Columbus- Ditto Buffalo reasons. Star with term for a team that can't attract/retain talent.
Jones in a blockbuster 1 for 1 would be the obvious target

I have a hunch that Leafs' management are a bit bewildered today, too. I hope they gather their wits and hit the ground running.

I don't think anyone will get fired, but I do think this might be the lesson that teaches them all not to fall in love with their players and to make tough, unsentimental personnel decisions.

What to do with Rielly, Muzzin, Dermott and Sandin? Frankly, Kyle, Sandin isn't nearly ready for top-four duty in the NHL, and he might never be. Let's be realistic.

Is Marner movable, and for what? He doesn't have an NTC, but maybe his cap hit is his own personal NTC? Is it worth moving him for the return he would bring back?

Seattle must be thinking Kerfoot in the draft. Should a deal be made to keep him -- or just let him go? Protect seven forwards and give them their choice of Holl and Dermott? Which players meet the minimum exposure requirements, and who has to be signed to go 7-3 or 4-4?

Is Fred ready for a back-up role and back-up money?

Will Hyman be realistic? This isn't the time to overpay -- again. Surely that's all in the past: lesson learned.

Wrap this season up with player debriefs and coaches' analysis ASAP, and get on with the next one.

Is how I want the forwards to look initially I think. Can we fill the two ????? In one trade involving Marner? Maybe. Perhaps it’s a coward coming back, and a Free Agent.

To note, I don’t think Galchenyuk NEEDS to be back, so he can walk if he’s asking for too much, or if there’s a better option, but I think he does deserve consideration to come back and that line with Kerfoot and Willy looked really good.

Honestly, I’m fine running back the defense with Sandin playing the full year, with the expectation that Dermott is off to Seattle. Maybe you tinker and replace Holl with someone else or Liljegren is promoted, but overall, this group wasn’t close to the issue.

Hyman is not this team's problem IMO. His injury and lacklustre return will lower his contract demands. I'd look to Anaheim swapping Comtois (and possibly Jones) for Marner. If we can up and get Drysdale out of that too, all the better. Shifts Hyman down to 2LW, Robertson down the 3LW, and Mikheyev down to 4LW.

My leafs off season plan:

Step 1: I would release Laurence Gillman and try to hire a more experienced advisor for Dubas, someone who's been in his shoes

Step 2: I would move Malholtra to PK coach or release our assistant coaches all together, then hire a PP specialist a la Boudreau

Step 3: Expansion draft, ideally we lose Justin Holl but I'd be okay with any of he, Dermott and Kerfoot

Step 4: pay Marners bonus and then trade him to the highest bidder. IDEALLY we send him to a team like Arizona, perhaps for Garland +, add to Marner to get Eichel, or find a way to land Tkachuk or Boeser + (who may want out). IMO Boeser + would be the ideal route for both teams.

Step 4: let Freddy walk and use his money for Hyman

Step 5: use any left over money to sign a guy like Jaden Schwartz or a solid top 4 RD to replace Justin Holl (who seems more like a good 5 to me)

Anything short of getting back elite talent for Marner is a deal you dont make. Simple as that.

Get rid of the one dimensional guys. A guy like Galchenyuk who can only be used in a sheltered offensive role isnt it. All it does is handcuff the coach. Galch either had to be in the top 6 or out the lineup based on what Keefe wanted from his third line and because thornton had to stay in the lineup. Stay out of situation like that.

Need defensively competent forwards who can chip in some offense. Ideally, they have some push back too. Who are some guys you think fit the bill?

He puck hogged, gave it up a lot, played died on his stick. Reduced mobility from knee injuries. Here for a lot of losses and he's not a good LW, he's better at RW. Blake Coleman is the much better addition.

That is a shit return for Marner

1st thing is Dubas needs to move away from his skilled analytical philosophy. He needs to see who is left in the playoffs and see teams do have some skill but the rest of the teams have big players who can play a physical game along with skill. Look at all our draft picks in the recent time skilled but small. You can't win with that in the playoffs.

I'd bring back Spezza on the same deal, he can still play and seems to get quicker with age. Simmonds is welcome back on league minimum as a 4th line RW and nothing more.

I wonder if Foligno returns on a one year deal?

Galchenyuk and Bogosian I'd keep. Robertson will full time next season, it's laughable he wasn't this year.

Dermott will go, probably Kerfoot too although he earned his keep this series.

A big decision for me will be Hyman. Does the club see him as a top 6 LW or 3rd line RW? I personally believe he's perfectly slotted on the 3rd line and should be paid like so. If he doesn't want to fall in line he can test free agency.

Need a 1A/1B goalie to platoon with Campbell.

A lot of this will depend on roster size next season. Are we back to 23 man roster or will there be a taxi squad? Time will tell.
