Save some of that 3rd line money and go for Palmieri/Tatar.

I'd be satisfied with a Foligno-Engvall-Mikheyev 3rd line.

Mikhayev is a good penalty killer but 0 pts in 12 GP in playoffs...slightly worse PK guy that can bring...anything else on top of what Soup brings out there? Worth asking, especially if you could shave a couple 100k off the AAV.

If rumors are true that Foligno is willing to take 1.5-2.5 million per season to stay with the Leafs. They should be all over that. They should sign that deal right after expansion draft.

My immediate order of business right now is trading 3 players off of our roster. Kerfoot, Dermott and Reilly. Trading Kerfoot and Dermott for picks right now is the best thing as we will be losing them for nothing in expansion draft. This would open 5 million in salary.

As for Reilly, it is time to move on. With Sandin penciled in to be the QB on PP1 next season, there is no need for Reilly on this team. That 5 million can be spent more effectively on balancing our defense. If Dubas was able to get what he did from Pittsburgh for Kapanen. Reilly is worth at least that in a trade if not more. One team that is in need of D is Detroit. I would try to strike a deal where Reilly and Engvall go to Detroit for Washington 1st they own (23rd 0verall) and Tyler Bertuzzi. The deal will effectively open up another 3+ million in salary while acquiring a 1st round pick in the process.

This now leaves us 20.5 million to supplement and improve the team. Include the resigning of Foligno (2million). Leaves us 18.5 million.

Sign Corry Perry to 1 year x vet minimum (wants to be a Leaf, better then Thornton)
Re-Sign Simmonds to 1 year x vet minimum (home town guy, adds toughness and grit)
Re-Sign Gally to 2 year x 1.50 million contract (Signs a short term deal to get value up)
Re-Sign Rittich to 2 year x 2 million contract (will get playing time)

Finding it very difficult to be enthusiastic for this season.

Someone significant HAS to go.

My only hope is management potentially learns something from watching these playoffs.

Running back 90% of the roster will not work.

Interesting topic:

How much money does Phil Danault get this offseason? Let's say 6Mx6 years - does he get more or less cash/term than that number? He doesn't score but there is no other player like this as a comparable.

It's almost like giving 11M to a winger whose career high in goals is 26

management's part of the problem, what you hope for is that ownership is watching......

Heard someone reference the rumour Morgan Rielly is willing to take a “pay cut” on a long term deal with Toronto. Was that a report by Pierre Lebrun?

100%.

But you'd think some sort of significant change would have had to have happened by now if ownership was truly unhappy.

Shanny is obviously sticking out his neck for Dubas. Dubas is obviously sticking his neck out for Keefe.

This has to be their last year before all 3 go with one swing on the chopping block.

you'd hope ownership is not happy, but who knows what they're thinking?

Would it not be smart for us to trade Kerfoot and Dermott before expansion and then protect 4D 4F? That way Seattle is basically forced into taking Mikheyev or Engvall lol.

As long as we get sufficient enough value for them that seems like a good move. Although we would need to get expansion exempt players or picks otherwise it wouldnt workout.

Mik is exempt, so they would have to take Engvall in that scenario.

What teams both want to trade for them (for reasonable return) and can offer protection slots?

For Kerfoot, target would be lower end teams, where he may even slot in as 2C. These teams should have plenty of forward spots free, if there going 7/3.

For Holl (or Dermott), I think a fair number of teams anticipate losing someone better, so they could pre-backfill.

Of course Vegas is a potential target for anyone, as they are not losing anyone in the expansion draft.

Well, the guy I was responding to wasn't shaving money off the 3rd line. He was adding.

Also, Mikheyev shot 6% and was still on a decent 3rd line pace of 30 points despite playing on a no-offence line with Engvall.

I think that was to maybe take less than market and not take less than now so not an actual "cut". That is significant, like the Spezza re-sign. I keep saying they can't afford to resign the guy but how can you not want that back?

CJ was on the GoodShow and said that he's been hearing that the Leafs might go for a significant goalie addition. Didn't drop any hints as to who.

I wouldn't be surprised if we trade for Darcy Kuemper (maybe with a bit of retention). Elite goalie but with lots of injury history to pair with our current very good goalie with lots of injury history. Give them 40 games each to keep 'em healthy.

Pierre Lebrun was on Leafs Lunch, and he said that Reilly was open to take less to stay in Toronto, but if a new contract is not signed by August the team will trade him.

Ah. Yes that sounds like what I saw on Instagram. Makes sense. Hopefully Rielly can take $6.5 million or so on an extension and we can keep him. Would really prefer to move Muzzin and bring in Hamilton with a clean up of the cap dollars.

So a player that will be a massive change and get players excited and now a significant goalie addition...

I gotta be honest, CJ and Friedman seem like hot air lately.

To be fair, John Gibson technically fits the criteria of CJ’s “player who will get Leaf fans excited” AND obviously his report of a goalie.

I'd love to agree but i just cannot see a 2nd pairing of Hamilton / Holl being better defensively than Muzzin / Holl.
