Prediction: Nick Foligno will be re-signed hell or high water so that the GM isn't left standing with nothing after that deadline deal. Foligno would also soften the blow of losing Hyman. Foligno's going to be WAY cheaper than Hyman as well. As far as I'm concerned Foligno should be signable at a little over $2M aav no more than 3 years.

Was hoping we dumped Andy last year and picked up MAF @50% for pennies on the dollar.

Doubt MAF has any interest in coming to T.O to be the backup for Soup. Even so, I doubt it would take him long to take over the #1 starter role.

MAF just spent the season as a tandem goalie, I doubt he would have any concerns about doing it again.

I offer him kessels retention money that happens to free up the same time Mo needs a new deal. 8x6.25=50m it’s the Ryan Ellis contract. If he doesn’t take it you move him and sign a ufa replacement
I think 6.25m with term is the perfect number for Rielly. That's us showing we value him and want him around. And him not trying to twist our arm in to the 7-8 he'd get on the open market. Win-win contract right there

Foligno has built his home, raised his family and is huge in the community in Columbus. I see him returning to the Jackets.

I really do hope he's back. I think healthy he can be a real contributor on this team. And he certainly brings toughness. We're gonna need PK guys too. PK guys that can take draws, after we likely lose Kerfoot. Definitely will make me feel better about the 1st we gave up to have him for such a short while

To be fair, only two teams have won a Stanley Cup in the cap era without a dman of that calibre (Carolina 2006 and Pittsburgh 2017). The rest have all been Hedman X2, Keith X3, Doughty X2, Pietrangelo, Chara, Lidstrom, Pronger/Niedermayer, Carlson, Letang, and Gonchar.

So it's a borderline requirement to have a dman of that calibre to win the Cup. My definition of "#1 dman" is that you can realistically see the player fill that role on a Stanley Cup winning team, and not have it be a major anomaly like the Carolina/Pittsburgh wins. So Rielly IMO is not a #1 dman - he can fill the role on a pretty solid team, but to be a true top contender, you probably feel like you want an upgrade there.

I agree with this assessment, but I also believe that we have three defensemen (Rielly, Brodie, Muzzin) that can be solid #2s on a cup winner. As long as our 4-6 defensemen don't burn us, that should be sufficient if our talent up front ever decides to perform.

How quiet things are is killing me haha can't wait for the expansion draft to get underway. After that, I think things really start to open up, when teams don't have to worry about who to protect

Hoping foligno gives us a pity contract re-sign.

Didn’t want him in the first place but when healthy will definitely bring leadership.

After what Dubas gave up to get him, how little we got out of him due to injury, seeing him leave as a UFA would make an already crappy situation worse.

Will have to be cheap, otherwise he goes and we add another chapter into our already impressive book of regrettable trades.

Justin Holl, but that doesn't actually matter.

Just like your checking centre isn't necessarily your #1 centre, many teams don't use their #1 defenseman to match against opposing top guys.

2nd in ice time.

But I'm guessing that doesn't matter either.

He may very well do that.

Although he also likely realizes he may only have a few seasons left in his career to chase a cup. And the Jackets likely aren't making the playoffs next year.

I wouldn't bank on it happening but I also won't blink if he signs a 1-2 year deal with the Leafs

if he only has 1 or 2 years left and winning a cup is a priority why would he sign in Toronto?

Fine with it as long as we see a better Foligno than we did.

The better question is why would we want him back?

He isn't young, plays a very physically demanding game and has some recent injury issues

We should be looking for younger players with speed and lean into what we are rather than scattering the team with elderly slow players

Besides Spezza these old guys haven't worked well

Kyle could always send Foligno (or whatever other cheap broken down guys he signs) to Robidas Island and if injuries are chronic it would make losing the first for Foligno less painful.
