Next season will be a franchise altering one for Maple Leafs

July 09, 2021

31 Thoughts: The Podcast's Elliotte Friedman touches on which player the Maple Leafs may lose in the expansion draft, the figures in the Travis Dermott extension, Morgan Rielly's future with Toronto, which big names Kyle Dubas may be targeting for acquisition, the market value for Frederik Andersen, the cap situation Julien BriseBois has to juggle, and Vladimir Tarasenko's trade request.

Damn you Friedman...given me so much hope for Tyler Bertuzzi now
Guy definitely gives the lineup a way different look with how greasy he plays.
I have a good feeling about a Bertuzzi trade. Friedman kept going back to him in the discussion today. Like he was hinting at something. We also know that the Leafs were interested in him last trade deadline.

If it happened, and he signed something with some term...it would probably be my next jersey purchase tbh lol

Would be great to get him but at what price? Sandin or Amirov could be as valuable a piece as Bertuzzi in 1-3 years. Little worried about how fast Dubas is burning through his assets.

Bozak, JVR Gardiner, likely Hyman, Anderson, etc gone in free agency.

13th OA pick, Brown, Kapanen, and AJ all moved in cap dump trades to accommodate the Matthews/Marner contracts. Kadri moved for one season of Barrie.

1st + two 4ths traded for a dozen games of Foligno the ~30 point 3rd line player. All the other trade deadline moves we've made, none of which have resulted in the slightest bit of playoff success.

Etc

Tavares and Brodie wanted to come here, so I don't give a massive amount of credit for those free agency signings.

He inherited a fantastic core, and had otherwise butchered some big contracts and diluted the entire talent system through multiple years of walking guys to free agency and moving away picks, prospects, and quality depth players for very little in return.

But hey, at least our expected goals stats are usually pretty good.

I hear you, but I wouldn't worry about Amirov that much. We know who Bertuzzi is. Amirov is still a question mark. If Amirov becomes a Bertruzzi that would be a huge success! May as well not roll the dice and just get the Bertuzzi.

This makes no sense.

You would think the GM contributed to them wanting to play here? We know he contributed in the presentation to Tavares. With Brodie, I guess you can say it was the money

Overall agree though, Dubas is an average gm at best.

Toronto Maple Leafs Lose Eemeli Rasanen, Looking For UFA Bargains

For those of you who don’t remember who Eemeli Rasanen is, he was the Toronto Maple Leafs second-round draft pick back in 2017. The Finnish born defensemen was selected 59th overall in the same NHL draft that saw Toronto chose Timothy Liljegren with the 17th overall pick in the opening round.
Since being drafted by the Maple Leafs, Rasanen has been pushed down the depth chart behind Rasmus Sandin, Liljegren, Teemu Kivihalme and others. The worst part is that Toronto is letting a defensemen who is six-foot-seven, 209lbs and likes to play with a physical edge walk away.
The 22-year-old is now eligible to re-enter this year’s NHL Entry Draft. It will be interesting to see how highly he is valued as a 22-year-old and whether or not he will go higher in this draft than the first time around.

The chances of him going higher than the first go around are 0%

Likely because he's hot garbage. Only player on his team who played more than 20 games to not record a single point. Zero hockey sense zero skill. Bye

Valuable in an area we already have in abundance. We don't have a Bertuzzi coming through the pipeline

What are we even going to trade for him? It's not like the cupboard's stocked.

Isn't Bertuzzi a UFA in one year?

Don’t get the eager attitude for Bertuzzi. Coming off a serious injury/surgery with RFA arbitration 1 year from UFA.

A lot of red flags to gamble a top prospect/pick even if he checks the boxes.

Would be pumped to acquire him at a discount, but not at the expense of a first, Robertson or Sandin.

Rather deal less for a guy like Foegele.

Is this serious? Rasanen would maybe get drafted if they made the Draft 32 rounds. Basically any 18-20 year old who has shown anything remotely promising in a top Junior league recently is a better use of a pick

LeBrun on Travis Dermott's deal, if the Leafs goaltending should be the priority this offseason and Morgan Rielly's contract status

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun joined us on OverDrive today as we look ahead to another offseason in the NHL and for the Maple Leafs. He touched on the new contract for Travis Dermott and what it means for him and for the club. As well Pierre discusses whether the Leafs shoring up their goaltending should be the priority and on Morgan Rielly as he moves into the final year of his contract.
