At the end of the day I seriously doubt Tre wants to relive a Gaudreau situation. He also doesn’t have any historical ties with Marner. So I think he’s closer to trading him but would be willing to hear Marner’s contact asks when he can be extended July 1st.
Let's not pretend he doesn't know exactly what the ask is. Hell I highly doubt teams aren't allowed to talk to their own players. I think the rule is just that they can't sign an extension prior to July 1

Sign a big guy like Hakanpaa/Edmundson to be the 7th. You can consider moving Liljegren to grab somebody to take over PP1 if you need too at that point.
Edmundson last contract was $14mm over 4 years, $3.5mm Cap Hit.

He will be 31 this month.

He isn't taking a paycut.

Leafs won't be paying $3.5mm for a 7th. defender.

Maybe Hakanpaa comes in low enough?

Edmundson is 31, 6'5 and has had some problems with his back, he was also used pretty sparingly during parts of last season to help him get through

He's a hard pass, no way in hell would I go anywhere near that, let's somebody else have that particular grenade

Why wouldn't he be taking a paycut? He's playing 3 minutes less a night, with no offense and his footspeed is gone.

He's more likely to go to a team with a top 6 spot available I suppose, but he won't be making $4M to play it.

What the hell am I reading?

Coaches treat players differently so that they can get the best out of them

Some guys need a bit of tough love every now and then to help them stay focused
Just like some guys need a softer touch to get the best out of them

People are different, they need different things to motivate and help them progress

Marner isn't a bad person because he doesn't react to tough love like Nylander does, there's nothing wrong with a coach treating guys differently to help improve everybody's performance

That's just good coaching

Have you watched the video when he was a kid? Lots of tough love there

Benoit also fills pretty much the same role and is younger and decently cheaper. If we allocate more $$ to the top 4 like we should be, that will push Benoit to the bottom pair. No slot available for Edmundson.

Marner for Sheo Theodore + right to Chandler Stephenson, makes too much sense.
Marner for Theo and Thompson starting to make the rounds. I had Hill instead of Thompson to make the money work but with Thompson making less than $1m, it would free up $5m is cap space.

I'd rather make it Marner + Lily for Theo + Thompson + Roy

If we deal Marner for Theodore ++ then I’d like us to sign Zadorov and Roy for the backend.

And if we dealt and moved on from Rielly I’d like us to also sign Montour.

Two separate thoughts.

I think Montour right now is better and the Leafs can get him for just cap space.

Also, I rather move Marner for younger pieces to reset the timeline.
But that’s a contradictory idea. On one hand, you want younger pieces for MM trade bc you want to reset the timeline and on the other you prefer signing an older player.

I would much rather they trade for Theodore and sign Marchesaault. Their window is now and not 3 years from now.

Would throw in Kampf or Calle in there to get Wild Bill too.

Even without Roy, I like the Theo/Thompson package. We can go after Montour and basically get a top pairing D (pushing Rielly to the 2nd pair) and a goalie.
If we can’t get Montour, we can also look at Marchessault then to play with Matthews with Marner gone.

Matthews-Marchessault
Knies-Nylander (Tavares or Domi at C)
Makes a good top 6 change.

Love it.

Would send Calle to Vegas for Roy.
Would resign both Bert and Domi.
Then run with
Bert-AM-Marchessault
Knies-Domi-Willie
McMann-JT-Roy

Ideally, you trade Kampf to free up more cap space as Holmberg is capable of playing 4C.

Maybe a 3 way deal….

To Tor: Theodore, Roy, Markstrom
To Vegas: Marner
To Cal: Thompson, Robertson

As a base?
Calgary won’t deal with the Leafs.
Also unless Flames use retention.

Would much rather have Thompson and use the money of Markstorm on Parayko or Marchessault

Buyer beware on Hornek. like the player, top 4 right shot d-man and can run a PP for you while being a good puck mover, but he struggled with consistency in the 2nd half of the season for Vancouver. Not sure how good or bad he is in his own zone but add in he's looking for 8m or higher and suddenly that's a risk.

I don't mind a Theodore + Thompson as a base, but I think Toronto needs to find a way to add and get something else for Marner. A top 4 d-man and a 1A goalie would be a pretty solid return, just depends how much Theodore is going to make.

Just for shits and giggles, and to piss off Jets fans, how about swapping our clown Marner for the Jackets clown Laine? :sarcasm:

Unlike Marner, at least Laine has a shot that could be used on our PP.

I mostly kid, however if the Jackets added some picks, and even a decent D prospect, then maybe it might work.

Matthews and Laine on opposite sides of a powerplay would be goddamn majestic I have to admit.

BJs need to add Johnny Hockey, lol.

That would be epic imagine Leafs send JT and MM for Laine and Johnny Hockey plus picks

I’d avoid Theodore, too many red flags.

Something like:
To TOR: Korczak, Roy, McBain, Thompson
To UTAH: Theodore, Liljegren, Marner retention
To VGK: Marner (50% retention), Dewar, Crouse, Kesselring

If the assumption is Theodore+Thompson for Marner, VGK is adding in Korczak and Roy for Crouse, Kesselring, Dewar. In total they add about 1.5M.

Utah adds NHL defenseman, including a top pair LD. They get Theodore and Liljegren for McBain, Kesselring, Crouse and retaining 388k on Marner.

Leafs get a very good 3C (Roy) and 4C (McBain), 1A goalie (Thompson), good young 3RD (Korczak) for Marner, Liljegren, Dewar and they save almost 5M before you factor in the Liljegren and Dewar contracts.

Another bit about Edmundson. He's a Darren Ferris client.

Ok, so Utah and Vegas get the stars and Toronto gets a bunch of 3rd liners and at best a future 2nd pair defenceman in Korczak? I really want to take you seriously but honestly half your trades comes off as if you're trolling.
