We would have to move out 4 million in salary to make it work.

ie. Kerfoot plus one of our depth pieces.
No, we wouldn't.

Hall's AAV at 50% retention isn't 4 million. It's also reduced by the percentage of days that he's already been on Buffalo's cap.

If you get another team to retain an additional 50% (hello Chicago?), the cost of that is a 4th-5th round pick.

I get why people.are saying our C depth sucks but the majority of our forwards are capable of playing centre. Marner, Mikheyev, Simmonds and Hyman are really the only pure wingers in a 12 man lineup.
Spez could fill at 3c and Joe at 4th C if needed

but we have F all to fill 2C

Seemed pretty obvious i was talking about Staal.
Ya and put ES in a position to succeed , like they did with Spezz and good things happen

put ES on this roster with a tiny 1.6m cap hit?? yessss please

thats half of what we pay kerfoot who is pretty useless

How many 3C's around the league are out pacing Jason Spezza's 19 points on the season? There can't be many of them. You might view Spezza as a 4th liner, but the dude is flat out playing better than the Eric Staal's or the world, for league minimum, in sheltered minutes.

Maybe Yanni Gourde in Tampa... that's about it.

How many teams have a 3C that would be a better option to fill the 2C role, should they have a top 6 center injured, than Jason Spezza, who filled that role for like 13 years? I'm not even trying to be argumentative with you. I just don't think there is a Kadri type player available to Toronto at this deadline, and Spezza is flat out better (or at least out playing) the 3C options that appear to be available on the market today.

Who could Toronto get that is actually playing better than Jason Spezza, who has 19 points, despite playing less than 10 minutes per night?

We would have to add futures to make that work though, and it would also leave us with a hole down the middle. Our centre depth is not great at the moment.

Tough call.
Yeah I’m not so much suggesting they should do it. Just that it would be possible.

I’m more in the camp of adding 2 guys with cap hits similar to Kerfoot by using retention. Something like Granlund and Savard in separate trades. Both make about the same as Kerfoot so with 50% retention it would be pretty close to money in money out. Other people might prefer guys like Foligno instead of Granlund but it is the same concept.

Not sure I'd be comfortable with Engvall and Spezza as our bottom 2 Cs.
I'm not either but that is better/safer then

moving a Bogo/Derm into the top 4 OR

Kerf/willi/Gally filling 2nd C

given the limited cap space ,,i'm not sure they can address these concerns

Exactly. The 3C on the defending Stanley Cup Champion, who is a juggernaut. Very few teams have 3 legitimate top 2 centers. Almost every single team in the NHL would be playing a guy in that role who is a bit of a reach.

One thing folks don't realize is that he doesn't have an 8 million caphit at this point in the season.
For some reason it seems like almost no one realizes this.

With double retention (similar to what the Leafs did for Vegas last year w/ Lehner), you can get Hall's AAV down to almost 1 mill (and maybe less).

If the cost at 50% is a 2nd + a decent prospect, to get double retention you add a 4th or a 5th rounder. No matter how bad some of the clowns on this board want to galaxy brain themselves into thinking Hall isn't a good player, you make that trade every day of the week.

I liked Staal. Would’ve liked to acquire him.

It’s pretty clear our sights are set higher though. So giving up two draft picks from him would be silly.

Bergevin under more pressure to make the playoffs so if he overpaid, doubt he cares. Serves him right for getting a second from Lou for Pleks.

Yup. If you can do something like that and put him beside Marner... he's scoring.

A lot of people have really strong opinions about things they don't know anything about unfortunately.

Hall scores pretty much anywhere outside of that armpit organization he's in right now. With Marner and/or Matthews, he's back on a 25+ goal pace at the very least.

Tbay/Jets have the depth to cover a hurt top 2 C
