I believe the Leafs will be making a huge splash this year. Everyone knows that this is the year the Leafs will need to go for it.

I wouldnt mind seeing a huge blockbuster with either Nashville or Buffalo.

Buffalo for a deal surrounding both Staal and Hall.

Nashville for a deal surrounding both Forsberg and Granlund.

If either of these deals are made it puts us right in the top 3 for the Cup along with Tampa Bay and Boston.

Yeah Boston is nowhere close to the top 3 this year. If they did not have their top line, they would barely even be a bubble team.

Boston only needs to get into the playoffs to be a contender. Too many players on that team with character to not be in the discussion. Dont let any of their recent play fool you. That team is well built and will be a force to be reckoned with.

I’m pretty sure if you go below min roster you can use the taxi squad as emergency call up as long they make under a certain number?

just checked.
Emergency Roster Rules
Normally, if a team has less than 18 skaters and less than $800K (minimum salary of $700K + $100K) cap space to call up a player, they must play 1 game with less than 18 skaters, and then they can call up a player with a Cap Hit of $800K or less and are permitted to exceed the cap for that player until an injured player returns. For this year, those rules still apply, except the player called up can have a cap hit of $1M or less.
However, if the team goes to less than 12 Forwards & 6 Defencemen available due to COVID and not enough cap space to call replacements up, they do not have to play 1 game with less than 18 skaters like normal. They can skip the 1 game with less than 18 skaters, and replace the missing Forwards or Defencemen with a player with a Cap Hit of $1M or less immediately.
If a team has less than 2 active healthy goalies and not enough cap space to recall 1 from taxi squad, they can activate the taxi squad goalie and exceed the salary cap.
If both goalies are hurt during a game, the taxi squad goalie can get dressed and enter the game. The taxi squad goalie would not have a cap hit charge in this situation.
Performance Bonuses
All performance bonus thresholds and amounts are pro-rated by 56/82. For example, if an player has an entry level "A" performance bonus of $212,500 for scoring 20 Goals, this is pro-rated to $145,122 for scoring 14 Goals. Therefore, all potential bonus amounts have been pro-rated by 56/82, likely reducing the amount of potential bonus carryover overages.

As a top 3 team though? Boston lost two key defensemen and did nothing to replace them. They have very little forward depth so unless guys are picking up the slack, all a team needs to do is shut down their top line and they have nothing (their top line accounts for almost half of their goals this year). Even Rask is struggling hard right now, so they'd need to count on Halak.

They are nowhere near a top 3 team in the NHL anymore. Not unless they make major changes at the TDL.

Boston is a good team but they're undoubtedly a weaker team than they've been the last few years. D core is worse and their forward core is starting to show their age.

Bergeron has gone from being one of the best shutdown centres in the league to a guy whose now one of the most sheltered forwards on the team (62% offensive zone starts!)

Not that he was the Leafs top target or anything, but this probably rules out him being moved at the deadline, though there was noise that they'd like to resign him.

Whatever the Leafs do, I prefer they do it sooner rather than later. I want new players to have a chance to become a part of the team, not just a hired gun. The more games they play, the better.

I'd agree but they are one of the few teams that have the cap space to make a huge splash at TDL.

They add Hall and Ekholm and all the sudden they're contenders again.

Wouldn't mind seeing Jumbo & Simmonds switch places depending on the schedule & situation

Am I the only one who really doesn’t want Staal and Hall? Pass for me.

Nashville yes.
Columbus yes
Anaheim yes

Absolutely none of Robertson, Liljegren, Sandin or Amirov should be even discussed for a rental.

Ottawa received Brannstrom, a 2nd round pick and a contract dump for Mark Stone (with a long term extension!). The cost of a rental should not include any of the guys listed above. Not even close, really.
I could only see Amirov or Liljegren if the rental comes with draft pick(s) attached. If the seller really loves one of those 2 I think ears should still be open.

Artem Anisimov would be a nice buy low top six LW rental option @ 50 retained ($2,275,000).

I have decided I want Mattias Ekholm.

Imagine adding another Muzzin, another Brodie to this D corps. It makes sense expansion wise as well. Sure we might lose Holl or Dermott, but we are going to lose one anyway.

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Ekholm
Dermott - Holl
Bogosian

Would be INCREDIBLE to have in the playoffs, and that’s a top 4 next season we could play in front of a Sandin-Liljegren pairing if we wanted.

Lets just freaking do it.

Philli is in a playoff race but if they drop out maybe Scott Laughton becomes available; he'd be a great fit for 3rd line C + pk if we can't get better & could push Hyman into top 6. Hometown kid too, I'd be happy if Leafs struck out on other rentals but still brought in a couple of hometown guys: Laughton & Oleksiak.

Hyman - Matthews - Marner
Thornton - Tavares - Nylander
Mikheyev - Laughton - Simmonds
Kerfoot - Engvall - Spezza

Let Spezza take draws as the 4th center, Kerfoot taking Thornton's place in defensive zone-starts with JT-Willie & defending leads late in games. Simmonds could be 3rd or 4th, Engvall could be 3rd or 4th, so could Kerfoot.

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Oleksiak - Bogosian
Dermott

Depending on the game Dermott could take place over Bogosian on right side although I prefer Bogo. Oleksiak gives Leafs toughness, a very strong 3rd pair (Oleksiak is a #4 D), a mean pair between him & Bogo, & another penalty killer. Oleksiak is also great insurance if one of our top 4 go down. In the case Leafs ever run 7 D that would be a great looking 7 D as well. Leafs have had a very healthy top 6 so far this season but that is bound to change. Muzz hardly missed a beat. Oleksiak would be our 4th or 5th best D.

Didn't realize Ekholm was still so cheap, thats a fantastic trade if they can get him. It would suck to lose a prospect but if he can be resigned then I'm all for it.

Same, it would be amazing, especially if he can be resigned the year after on a 4 year deal, be worth giving up potential cheap prospects
