I agree, nor should they be from the names thrown out.

Yeah I would agree with that.

Basically what I'm getting at (and I don't think this is a surprise to any of you) is that we need to stop reacting to what the media says.

Darren Dreger is a moron. Same with the Craig Button's and Nick Kypreos' of the world. They are clickbait artists. They know what gets them clicks and what gets them mentions. We shouldn't give them attention. TSN listed 'Toronto's top prospect' as a top deadline trade piece. So dumb and arbitrary but it gets people reacting and that's what they want.

You don't see Friedman, McKenzie, Lebrun or Johnston spouting off on outlandish ideas. Those are the guys that report the facts. They aren't tabloid-esque infants.

Yeah, Terry doesn’t make sense to me for ANA to trade, but his names been out there, so that’s why I mention him.
With Vesey out and Simmonds/Galchenyuk in we need some help on the PK. Only 5 forwards on the roster who PK, need at least one more.

I also think we'll start to see some serious load management with Thornton/Spezza/Simmonds. They are depth scorers who need PP time and sheltered 5 on 5 usage to be most effective. It's hard to find enough time for all 3 at the same time.

Kerfoot, Marner, Hyman, Engvall, Mikheyev. If necessary, Spezza. Just can't subtract another one right now.

Absolutely none of Robertson, Liljegren, Sandin or Amirov should be even discussed for a rental.

Ottawa received Brannstrom, a 2nd round pick and a contract dump for Mark Stone (with a long term extension!). The cost of a rental should not include any of the guys listed above. Not even close, really.

Yeah that’s my feeling too. If guys like Hyman, Andersen and Rielly walk in the next two years we need replacements at different positions and trade assets to acquire new long term solutions too.

The premise with the Toronto media is always “the Maple Leafs need to pay extra to get things rolling.” Always painting the picture of some mid market GM sitting back in his chair, no pressure in the world, smoking a cigar while the Leafs are code red on the other line.

From Mirtle:

'In the most extreme example of what I’m talking about, they could even bring in a much larger salary than Granlund’s. In theory, if they acquired Taylor Hall’s $8 million cap hit, on the day of the trade deadline, after Buffalo retained half of his salary, and a third team retained a further 25 percent, his cap hit would drop to around $465,000.'

Problem is it is going to cost you an asset for another team to retain. The more they retain the higher the cost. Viable option to get us a stud though.

So many articles are coming out in last couple days about players wanting to stay on their respective teams and sign extensions on bad teams... I wonder why.

Hall, Iafallo, Pearson, Foligno, Palmieri...

Other than Forsberg non of the current names being mentioned as potential rentals are better than Muzzin (who also had an extra years worth of term) and the best prospect thatbwqs involved in that deal beyond the 1st was Grundstrom and his value was significantly below a guy like Amirov or Robertson ect

For sure, but look at it this way - say we get Hall where Buffalo retains 50% (4m) and then Chicago retains half the difference (2m). By that point, about 2/3rds of Hall's salary is already paid out, so Chicago would only end up on the hook for about $600k in real dollars (even less the closer we do it to the deadline).

$600k in real dollars is worth what, maybe a 4th rounder? So shouldn't be too expensive. The biggest obstacle would be various teams competing with us to launder their salaries through Chicago, but according to experts there won't be much action this TD so we might not have much competition.

Some guys may just like where they live.

Like I'm surpsied anyone signs in Arizona for the hockey. But I can see why it can be an attractive place to spend a winter when you're not at the rink

Not sure anyone can convince me that Taylor Hall wants to re-sign with the Sabres. A lot of these to me feel like tactics to increase some form of value. The timings of them seem really........ convenient.

"We totally don't want to trade this player, we're really close to an extension... nope... unless..."

Players always say that though. They aren't just gonna come out and say " I can't wait to leave". When it comes to player interviews, its always by the book cliche answers.

JT said he wants to stay with the Isles for example. Thats why their fans are pissed

Mirtle just outlined ways in which the Leafs can add a 4 million dollar player at the deadline without subtracting a player from their roster on the Athletic ($).

Good article, he is making the assumption for those deals that the Leafs carry a 20 man roster, and no injuries the rest of the year.

taxi squad though right? If there is an injury you can use the taxi squad? Or no.

I don’t think this works though? I mean I think the total amount is 50% retention no matter how many teams retain?

I get that. It's mostly the obvious players and the obvious teams selling that seem really bizarre. I guess the ones that jump out to me are Taylor Hall and now Kyle Palmieri.

I believe the Leafs will be making a huge splash this year. Everyone knows that this is the year the Leafs will need to go for it.

I wouldnt mind seeing a huge blockbuster with either Nashville or Buffalo.

Buffalo for a deal surrounding both Staal and Hall.

Nashville for a deal surrounding both Forsberg and Granlund.

If either of these deals are made it puts us right in the top 3 for the Cup along with Tampa Bay and Boston.
