Bunting Matthews Willy is a great combo

Unfortunately it will never happen because it's basically what babs ran and we can't have it getting out that babs had good ideas

Not to mention it would hurt AMs stats and our leadership isn't good enough to sell him on why self sacrifice is good for the team

Do you mean Hyman-Matthews-Nylander.

Bunting only joined last year.

Jarnkrok-Kerfoot-Nylander - a remake of the Galchenyuk-Kerfoot-Nylander playoffs line?

The 43 minutes was Robertson's minutes played with Nylander. He played 102 minutes total. I like the idea of Robertson and Tavares - I just don't have faith in Tavares to become quicker.

I agree with Kerfoot probably not playing on the 3rd line but I don't love him with either of the players I have in the middle 6. I could see:

Robertson-Tavares-NAK
Engvall-Kerfoot-Nylander
Anderson-Kampf-Jarnkrok

Swapping Jarnkrok/Engvall as you suggested above would work as well.

I'd consider flipping Jarnkrok and Engvall. Engvall and Kampf work so well together.

Thanks, I missed that. 1 point in 102 minutes over 10 games. :help: Might be okay for a grunt, but not for a player who is supposed to produce.

That's why a line of Robertson-JT-Marner makes sense.

He'll get a lot of scoring opportunity and chances to boost confidence
 
If we were really dead set on splitting Tavares/Nylander and spreading things out as much as possible, best bet would probably be to go with something like...

X - Matthews - Marner
Bunting - Tavares - Jarnkrok
Robertson - Kerfoot - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - NAK

X being whichever of Anderson, Malgin, Steeves, or Holmberg looks best with Matthews/Marner. And then when Knies came over, he'd replace them and switch spots with Bunting.

I think optimum is to have your best setup man with your best scorer. To an extent Marner is wasted with Tavares, as is Nylander.

When one is paid 11 million and the other almost 7 million, they need to figure it out. By the sounds of it, seems like JT knows he’s got to play faster and keep up, hopefully that helps.

August is unbearable every year with everyone on holidays and hockey news slows to a crawl.

And when news breaks it never happens during work hours where it helps get you through the day it's always on the weekend.

You can pick and choose what you want out of this, but clearly Nylander, Matthews and Marner together works great. Limited minutes, but I think we can agree it isn't how we would setup lines long term.

Bunting and Marner seems to be great, whether it's Tavares or Matthews centering them. Matthews had the benefit of the most time... for that purpose, we will leave that line together. The top line stays.

[TD]A couple of notes. Nylander playing LW, for Tavares doesn't work. Kerfoot, Tavares and Nylander isn't very good. Robertson, Tavares and Nylander was quite good. Kerfoot, Tavares, Mik worked well too, but given what we see with the Engvall/Kampf combo, that isn't ideal. We should try Robertson/Tavares/Nylander for a more extended look

Engvall/Kampf work well together. With Kerfoot, not so much. With Nylander barely... One of the newer guys should get a shot with them.

Just for completion purposes.. here is our D pairings, ranked by Expected net goals per 60. You can decided which pairings mix you'd like out of this. If I'm going by stats only, and ignoring that some of these had limited minutes... I'd go with to try.

Admitting, the Rielly Holl combo didn't have huge minutes, and looking at it, probably not representative of really playing much together.

You can pick and choose what you want out of this, but clearly Nylander, Matthews and Marner together works great. Limited minutes, but I think we can agree it isn't how we would setup lines long term.

Bunting and Marner seems to be great, whether it's Tavares or Matthews centering them. Matthews had the benefit of the most time... for that purpose, we will leave that line together. The top line stays.

Now we look at Tavares, outside of Bunting and Marner.

[TD]A couple of notes. Nylander playing LW, for Tavares doesn't work. Kerfoot, Tavares and Nylander isn't very good. Robertson, Tavares and Nylander was quite good. Kerfoot, Tavares, Mik worked well too, but given what we see with the Engvall/Kampf combo, that isn't ideal. We should try Robertson/Tavares/Nylander for a more extended look

Engvall/Kampf work well together. With Kerfoot, not so much. With Nylander barely... One of the newer guys should get a shot with them.

Players get hurt and forgotten about around here for some reason.

Much like Sandin (one of the best young D in the league last season before Pionk wiped his knee out leading to issues the rest of the way), Robertson looked to be fitting in quite well despite the lack of production and was about to break out IMO and he broke his leg.

He tore it up in the A though and I hope he gets a real shot this year.

Rielly and Liljegren need to have a nice stretch together.

Sandin gets Gio or Holl.

If Kerfoot is dealt it would be nice to see the Leafs enter day 1 of the season with ~1.8M in cap space so they can pluck players off waivers. Any of Bastian, Zetterlund from NJD or Anderson-Dolan, Andersson from LAK or Liam Foudy from CBJ could realistically be waived to start the season. I think they'd all be worth a claim.

Bastian is a big RW who hits a lot and put up strong defensive numbers last year. He can realistically play any of the bottom 6 RW positions. Bastian will be 25 in December.

Zetterlund is a big frame RS winger who put up very good numbers in the AHL and had a decent NHL stint last year. He could realistically get a look in the top 6. His offensive play driving numbers in his small NHL sample were better than anyone on the Leafs and Devils combined. I'm not claiming he's the best offensive player between the two teams but he did put up very promising results and he looks primed for an NHL breakout. He is also a positive defensive player. Zetterlund will be 23 to start the season.

Anderson-Dolan and Andersson are relatively in the same boat. Both would be bottom 6 C's on the Leafs. Both players were bad in their NHL stints last year but have very good AHL production. JAD will be 23 to start the year and Andersson 24.

Foudy is a 6'2 bottom 6 C who has played 37 NHL games. Most notably 10 games in the bubble the year the Jackets knocked out the Leafs. He has not shown anything noteworthy at the NHL level but he put up very strong AHL numbers in 12 games during his 20 year old season. For reference he had 1.33 P/G to Robertson's 1 P/G in their 20 year old season. Small samples for both - I'm not claiming Foudy will be a better offensive player than Robertson.

Edit: Dakota Joshua also fits the bill for 4C and he's signed for 2 years. He is 26 and put up very strong defensive results in the NHL last year. He also increased his AHL production by 0.26 P/G in the playoffs.
