I think one of the keys to our success will be the emergence of our next wave of players. Sandin, Liljegren still at value contracts becoming top 4 D. A couple/few of Knies, Robertson, Amirov, Holmberg, Anderson, Steeves, Douglas, Niemala, Kral, Woll becoming good players for the Leafs, on decent contracts.

Agreed. I'm a little torn on Muzzin, I feel like he's a more obvious candidate to move on from than Holl or Kerfoot. It's hard to imagine him playing close to 82 games for the next 2 years. This is a declining asset at a high price. I don't love blocking Sandin. I love the guy, but I think it's time we develop the next wave of D.

I'm really high on Kral...maybe another half to full season of AHL seasoning and he's ready.

That Giordano extension is a double edged sword.

You gave up assets and managed to sign him to such a nice contract but at the same time, it is really blocking Sandin.

It would be a lot easier if we had a Muzzin type replacement for sure. That’s our challenge, how do we find a physical guy, with the defensive prowess to replace him?

It would solve a lot of issues, if we could find a good sized, physical RD, who is strong defensively and can skate. It wouldn’t even matter if they didn’t provide any offence of note.

Move Muzzin and Holl;

Mo Brodie
Giordano Liljegren
Sandin xxx

I know it isn’t realistic to expect us to move Muzzin, but a Muzz for a younger Right handed version of himself would be a great move for us.

I think the issue is that Muzzin is no longer the #1D he has been on the Leafs for years. And the moment he stopped being a reliable minute-eater the contract becomes a liability preventing us from filling the gap. He had an injury filled season and if he's bouncing back and forth from the IR it's not helping us rack up wins if we're relying on Mete or Jordie Benn.

Sounds like they have no interest in moving on from him in any event, but I'm not sure that's the correct call.

I guess we have to see if last year was just a bad year for Muzzin, and he rebounds to form (great for us), or if this is age catching up.

Having said that, at some point every team has to count on their Mete, Benn, Kral types. Injuries happen, and I’m not sure how many teams are blessed with better 7/8/9.

Moving muzzin = two trades regarding a replacement

I dont think it is realistic to trade muzzin for a younger muzzin (who would be cheaper)
I’d agree with your assessment. I don’t think we’d need the replacement to be the quality that Muzzin provides us necessarily, just a solid guy who could become a second pairing at their peak. Not the top pairing type that Muzzin has been. I think if we are patient, we are going to get that quality from Liljegren and Sandin. But just replace the defensive and physicality side, without giving up mobility.

I’m not even sure who that might be currently.

Or just sign someone like Subban for cheap.

Rielly Brodie
Giordano Liljegren
Sandin Subban
Benn Holl

I thought Kral had a really good camp/pre-season last year. I was surprised he didn’t get any call ups throughout the season, especially towards the end. He’s definitely part of the reason why I wouldn’t be opposed to moving Sandin for a third line center like Rasmussen or Hayton.

Subban’s agility and mobility on the ice are a problem now. He’s still got decent straight line speed, but not the mobility. Combine that with Sandin’s slower feet so far, and you’ve got a bit of a disaster. Sandin’s partner should be someone who skates well.

I didn't think Kral made a bad play in the entire pre-season and also was surprised they didn't do a temperature check on his development with 1-2 games call up.

Because I still believe in Sandin as a long term top 4 D and really wouldn't want to trade him, I would need to get someone with top 6 potential or a right handed D etc..

Rasmussen or Hayton wouldn't be appealing to me.

"There was one guy that was untouchable. Everybody's up for grabs except Nazem Kadri."
Not sure where that quote is from, but I really hope it's not an actual quote, because if it's real, my god, Lou was an even bigger idiot than his tenure suggested, and we dodged an even bigger bullet that I ever could have imagined.

When I watched Kral, idk why but he just reminded me of a young Gunnarsson.

So have him as a 6th or 7th guy, if it doesn't work out no biggie, if it does, worst case scenario we have a much needed point shot on the PP.

Sadly, he’s not even good on the PP anymore. 35 seconds per game last year, 0 points and he was on the ice for more goals against, than for, on the PP!!!

Lou never said it the commentator in the video did. Zero context.

Yep, Subban is an easy pass for me. Can't see anyway there is any interest in him from Dubas.

Looking at players that could be available still I see a possibility to revamp the 2nd line.

Trades:
Nylander for Mangiapane

Calgary gets a better point producer to play on their top line and augment their power play. Toronto gets a younger/cheaper player with 1 extra year of term. Mangiapane is a top defensive forward in the league and also a top 10 5v5 goal scorer over the last 3 seasons.

Engvall+2024 4th (?) for Puljujarvi - not sure what pick capital needs to be added to Engvall to get Puljujarvi, it seemed widely reported Edmonton wanted a 2nd for him this summer

Edmonton moves on from Puljujarvi which both sides want for some reason. They get a replacement player for their 3rd line while saving 750k.

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Mangiapane-Tavares-Puljujarvi
Steeves/Robertson-Kerfoot-Jarnkrok
ZAR/Holmberg/Anderson-Kampf-NAK

Mangiapane and Puljujarvi are both strong contributors at 5v5 and would in theory bring the best out of Tavares with their ability to play off the cycle.

Calgary just signed Magiapane, not impossible but doubtful they move him.
Hard to see a Sutter coached team looking to add Nylander. Just seems like asking for trouble.
