I keep circling back to a Muzzin trade that brings back a 2nd pair RHD that is cheaper.
Mayfield +?

Reilly Brodie
Sandin Mayfield
Gio Liljgren

Essentially two second pairs.
Saves about 4m on the cap.
Lets you add another 3 decent guys and Sandin.

ZAR + Statsny + De Haan could be had.

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Robertson - Tavares - Marner
Jarnk - Statsny - Kerfoot
ZAR - Kampf - Engval
Aube-Kubel Gaudette

Loose a bit of the Muzzin presence on the back end but get a huge addition yo the forward depth.

The only way I see management wanting to move Muzzin this season is in this type of situation -b where Muzzin is replaced by a similarly impactful player. Next summer may be a different story.

This was the summer to in theory move and re structure cap with muzzin or nylander to try and get a useful long term piece with them having 2 years left

I thinknit is too late now and moving them with only 1 year left could be less fruitful and likely more difficult

Simmonds makes 900k, he’s easily buried and when he retires he’s probably taking a league job in diversity and inclusion. We must everyday strive to be more diverse and inclusive, because if we do not, then Nazis.

Wayne would be good at that job, he’s charismatic and respected.

Muzzin starts game one and maybe plays a full healthy season, but if he gets another head injury or is out for a while he can marinate on the LTIR while he collects his money. If so I’d be for renaming it Muzzin Island.

Kylington has to want at least 3.5 and Bread Eater probably wants at least 6, but the Flames can still make moves and can’t afford any more bullshit.

I’ve said before and will ask again - Alex Nylander (750k). Why not let Pittsburgh take a look at the stable of C/D-tier prospects? He’s played a full season (84 games) and is plug and play and if he sucks he sucks, but maybe he won’t.

They're too late to the game on cap dump moves. I think they're too in love with the idea of Muzzin and his play style because they don't spend a lot of resources drafting, signing, trading for this type of player. So they're going to ride the distressed version they have into the ground.

Oh i agree sadly

He was also arguably the best Leafs D in the playoffs. He can look like rubbish all season as long as he brings it during the games that matter most.

I think Muzzin ultimately is moved at some point next summer for a pick.

I would hope for positive return.. if this summers standstill shows anything next year could be even tighter with the players that are expiring

Did you have an idea for trading nylander or muzzin that would actually make the team better?

First off - this does NOT seem like a Dubas signing. But , he did mention finding 'diamonds in the rough' to fill the cracks.

Jake Virtanen has been given a second chance ...whether you believe the verdict or not, he is not guilty AND can move on from it.

Now, Toronto seems less than likely (to be the team) to give him a second chance - because the media storm that would follow.

But, at league min. Jake Virtanen has potential to resurrect his NHL career.

Jake Virtanen has shown repeatedly that he doesn't have it in between his ears to be a professional hockey player.

Simply put, I don't think that changes and I think in Toronto he will get eaten up. It's the last market he should be in.

Strong pass. Money is much better spent on a player like ZAR at this point in my books.

Fair. I'm just too over zealous about adding a winger with size - that mayyy find his niche, flair and drive.

Unless you think Virtanen would have more appeal if he was a LWer because they could at least give him a shot at that second line LW spot.

Otherwise I don’t see the fit. He’s physical but more of a scorer than a checker imo

2 trades:

Robertson to DAL for Stankoven

At first glance this make look like a bad move but the Leafs essentially get the exact same player but 2 years younger and less injury history. It is basically a do-over on Robertson with Robertson seemingly being passed on the LW depth chart by Knies and Bunting probably holding the 2nd top 6 LW spot for a few years. Dallas still has to sign Robertson's brother and this may help them in signing him long term which is why they would be motivated to do it. Dallas' top 4 forward prospects are all right shots so they could use some diversity (Stankoven, Bourque, Johnston, Dellandrea). Stankoven arguably had a better D+1 season than Robertson and won CHL player of the year as a 18/19. Stankoven is also a right shot which the Leafs lack in the pipeline (Knies, Amirov, Hirvonen, Holmberg, Steeves, Minten are all left shots). Stankoven also plays with Minten which will give the Leafs a duo that can grow together - not sure if that really matters. Assuming Stankoven stays in the CHL this coming season his ELC won't expire until the new Nylander/Matthews/Marner contracts are completed. The Athletic also has Stankoven listed as a better NHL prospect

Sandin to ARI for Hayton

Myself and others have proposed this in here many times and it just makes too much sense. Maybe include Kerfoot going to ARI and a pick coming back.

These 2 trades would bolster the Leafs offensive depth, Hayton slides in as 3C with room to grow into 2C in 3 years when Tavares expires. Stankoven marinates for another 1-2 seasons and steps into the lineup with multiple years left on his ELC.

Rather have Robertson, no need to trade him; they can use his help now.
