Note: most significant signings made by Nonis had to be dumped at extra cost - Clarkson, Robidas, Kessel, Gardiner, Lupul and a number of others waived.
I appreciate the detailed rundown. The bolded comment seems a little disingenuous though.

And actually traded for Muzzin and actually signed Brodie and actually traded for and re-signed Giordano and actually found Bunting and actually convinced a big name Toronto boy to finally sign with our team.

There is good and bad with every GM. You just hope the good outweighs the bad. If there was a perfect GM, the same team would win the cup every year.
Yes both GM’s made actual trades. I’m just saying you shouldn’t judge someone based off bad moves that didn’t happen.

You also shouldn't judge a GM on only the moves you disagree with. Seems short sighted.

Really starting to wonder what the plan is with Simmonds. Ever since his wrist injury in that first season against te Canucks, he's really taken a step back. I'd like to see someone like ZAR signed for 1 million, completely replacing Simmonds but I truly wonder if they'd waive Simmonds.

Regardless of what they do, Simmonds shouldn't be a regular in the lineup this season.

I dont think its disengenuous - every big contract he signed ended with us jumping through hoops to get rid of.

Agreed. I think Dubas needs to explore using a couple of prospects to play in the bottom 6. He couldn't possibly hope that Simmonds will come back and contribute. There has to be some glimmer of hope for the Toronto Marlies Graduates.

We have to remember the Leafs were motivated sellers in 2014-15 and 2015-16 partially due to the presence of Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Auston Matthews in the 2015 and 2016 drafts. They were pitching bodies overboard after narrowly losing the McDavid lottery so they could have the best chance at Auston Matthews.

That's not a vote of confidence for Nonis' roster construction, but most pieces who were in their late 20s or could inflate the Leafs point totals in the standings had to go.

It would be nice to see them build a Kid Line and have 3 Marlies make the jump and grow together as a unit. It's not a high priority item, but the Leafs do need some personality beyond the Big 4.

I honestly thought the Gardiner contract ended on good terms - I may have misremembered. I also didn't realize LTIR'ing Robidas/Lupul was "jumping through hoops".

@zeke is this true?

True on gardiner i had mashed up his end with that other trade made with carolina. We didnt pay to get rid of him he just ended an injured shell of himself on the bottom pairing.

But the legend of Robidas Island was definitely us jumping through hoops

Bozak and Komarov also seemed to end fine. I am not trying to say the Nonis era was good. I just don't think you need to create facts to make it look worse.

I also don't think the LTIR was jumping through hoops. The Leafs never took on bonus overages from having players on LTIR so it was a non factor.

You're thinking of 17-18 but we actually got badly outclassed by the Bruins who outscored us by 8 goals and outshot us by 7 shots per game.
nah 18/19 just gotta minus bozak and jvr from it. I still think 17/18 Leafs would have went far if we won game 7 though.

kadri rielly from burke is significant, then all our young studs and better depth players, then add on tavares and muzzin. It was a team with 3 different finger prints on it that was the team to beat if we could get past game 7 and insert kadri back in.

I don't think the historically bad PK carries over to the entire playoffs. 18/19 Leafs demolishes any other version of Leafs seen in the playoffs across last 6 seasons and I can't be convinced otherwise so better to agree to disagree if anyone else does.

There are quite a few promising young Marlies forwards. Robertson, Steeves, Anderson, Douglas, Holmberg. I'd love to see all of them get a good look in preseason.

Bozak/JVR weren’t on the 18-19 team, that was Tavares’ first year with the team.
yeah my bad after all the covid years, 2017-2019 is all one big blend sometimes. point still stands though even if you minus those 2.

I also forgot connor brown was a burke draft pick. Excellent bottom 6 player for us.

Ill have to disagree with you on the very surprising and suspicious and convenient Robidas and Lupul LTIRs.

Simmonds hasn't been good in 7 years. Wrist injuries are curable and that was 1.5 years ago. Dude was on a hot streak before he got hurt. Even if the wrists goes the fact is he still sucks at skating. In another words, he's just trash, he has been for a while

He should have been dropped last year. But leafs and their loyalty

He will clear waivers and no one will care.

ITT: Horrible contracts aren't horrible if they're so horrible that the players break down to the point of being incapable of playing and the team is lucky enough that they can go on LTIR.
