All true. If you look at Simmonds he's actually built more wiry and lean than a classic big bruiser, so he's definitely putting the mileage on faster than even other power forward types without the padding either. Great warrior, hope we see him from time to time but he's probably too broken down to go the full 82 and a playoff run.
I've said it before but I saw him weekly during the summer when I was in college, when he was a King and frequented an establishment I went to. No one knew who he was lol.

I remember thinking his legs and arms were pretty damn skinny but I shook his hand once, definitely felt the power there.

I actually have Brodie as a candidate for a massive decline.

Brodie's game is built around his legs and IQ, neither seem to be declining so he should be good or top 4 level for the duration of his contract.

I don't see Brodie massively declining. He'll hold his contract value until the end. I could see a small decline coming as i've noticed his hands are a bitter stiffer and his skating might take a small step back, but his IQ and positional play are the hallmarks of his game.

Muzzin could completely drop off a cliff, potentially a lot more than he already has. I think it's inevitable in the last year of his deal.

Someone on the trade board suggested trading Muzzin and Knies for Comtois and Kulikov... a non-starter for me... but then I looked in the Ducks, who have Drysdale, signed Klinberg and also have Shattenkirk on the right side.... Maybe Shattenkirk and Comtois for Muzzin and Knies could be interesting.

Comtois had a bad year last year, Covid and an injury, but I think he rebounds, and should make an outstanding winger with Tavares and Nylander.

Shattenkirk gives us a decent RHD, can play PK as well, and while is similar age to Muzzin, isn't regressing the same way.

It allows us to move Kerfoot immediately, and should leave us with nearly $3 mil in cap room.

I appreciate giving up Knies isn't desirable for some, but I think Comtois and him are about equal, but Comtois is further developed, and would be able to help now, where Knies is going to take a few years. The problem could be, Comtois and Bunting could have good years, and then you'd have to sign someone to an extension... so you'd probably want to extend Comtois immediately, before a breakout... he'd probably resist...
Horrible.

Brodie and Giordano have virtually no hard playoff miles on them, they're good candidates for graceful aging curves.

Honestly see zero motivation to trade Muzzin at this point in the offseason (next summer obviously a different story).

He's everything the Leafs need when it comes to playoff performers. I don't care how down he looks over the season - as long as he's rested and ready to go game 1 of the first post season series.

I agree, we don’t need 82 games out of Muzzin we just need him for the playoffs. Even if he doesn’t get injured again next year we will probably give him some serious load management down the stretch.

I agree that I don't see Brodie massively declining. However Muzzin is declining and/or unable to stay healthy and Giordano is going to really decline because he has gotten so immobile. These things have to be taken into consideration. Can you imagine the team somehow getting really good goaltending in 2022-23 along with its productive star forwards yet failing in the playoffs for an entirely different reason: a defense that breaks down because its age catches up to it?

Oh yeah, Brodie isn’t declining physically any time soon with that efficient play style of his, though the quality of his defense seemed to lag a bit last season at various stretches.

Well most players decline due to injury, and one of the biggest predictors of injury is age. Reaction time goes down a bit, and collisions do more damage. In terms of strictly playing hockey he should be fine, but it's not entirely within his control either

Muzzin is a much bigger concern though. He missed like 40 games last year from two concussions and had injuries in the playoffs against Montreal and Columbus. I can't believe they're planning to rely on him again this season

Playing with Rielly can do that to a D man.
He was looking pretty trash when Nick Paul took him to the cleaners in game 7
and that was a 1 v 1play

Brodie wasn't as sharp defensively this year and had a lot of odd brain farts. Only got 2 years left on his deal so even if he declines this year dealing a 1 year cap dump only costs moving 20 picks or so from the 1st round so not the worst case.

I can’t tell if you are saying this seriously or if it’s tongue in cheek here…..

I do wonder what the Price on Patty Kane will be. Im not willing to move Knies.

The reality is we wont be able to re-sign Kane. So for a rental of Patty Kane I would give up a 1st and Sandin with Kerfoot.

Which won't get it done... and I'm not including Niemela or Knies for him. So I think we agree. Not happening.

He be amazing on the Leafs but it's a pipe dream. Even at the dead line. Probably not happening.

Fun to think about but it doesn't fit the timeline to me. We have the big guns. They need to do their part.

It's the guys lower in the lineup which we might have with signings and guys graduating.

Goaltending is the question mark. If it is just solid... every month.. between the 2 of them. We might be in pretty good shape. I'm hopeful but worried.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Brodie's decline in D lined up with the period where both our goaltending sucked and he had to play with Justin Holl...

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Jarnkrok - Kerfoot
Aston-Reese - Kampf - Aube-Kubel

reese signed on a pto

I really hope they try him at Center

Simmonds/Clifford-Z.A.R - N.A.K

Would be a high energy fourth line
