The leafs have been wary of rentals outside of the bubble season. I don't think that will change this season.

If they can make a big move for a player with term, they'll do it. But they don't have the assets to keep up with other teams in the bidding.

A player with term is very different than a player for 3 months.

Let the Bruins blow their load and mangle their cap with carryover bonuses for next year.

I agree a big time rental isn't likely, it's why I believe Henrique is the right acquisition since we get him for more than 1 run. Someone like Meier isn't feasible given our prospect pool

Though, like @BertCorbeau mentioned above, I hope we go the rental route on Barbashev. He's not a big name so he shouldn't cost a lot, but would make our 3rd line a lot tougher to play against

Apparently there's some speculation that the leafs will have a conservative TDL because they just don't like the odds in a stacked Atlantic division and will wait till next season for any big moves.
Wait for next season?

Will Matthews/Nylander re-sign if they bow out of round 1 again? Will they want to stick around after their contract is up? MGMT might have to move them in the summer unless you are ok with them possibly walking for nothing.

Dubas doesn't have a contract. He might be gone if they flame out in the first round. Props to him for being conservative and recognizing this is a tough division, though. Going all in won't guarantee a 1st round win.

I guess my point is that we don't know how many kicks at the can this team has left. A lot of questions in the summer if they disappoint.

Bunting is a player whos playing with grit but hes not a big hittrr 3.55 hit/60... grit doesn't mean hit

Grit is player who will battle hard, rush the net, play hard, battle for every puck and going on place we will be in pain.
Bertuzzi isn't what you're describing. I also don't think Bunting is that.

This is the Bruins all in year. I'm pretty sure the team is going nuts because this is Bergeron's swan song.

Next season will be leafs, an even weaker TB because of the Sergachev extension, and maybe Buffalo. Toronto can easily find it's way out of the Atlantic at least for 1st round.

TB is going into cap hell next year
3 mil in cap space
They need to resign Ross Colton is he with a 1st rd pk + a prospect
He will probably want 3 mil

I don't think TB will trade with us

I totally agree

If we beat TB we will get beat by Boston.
Boston is the Cup favorite this year
Next might not manage the playoffs.

Second place in the division would still make for a very respectable finish. The wait could also end up being rather lengthy if the bar is firmly set at first place or bust. While I might not necessarily mind the team having a conservative TDL, this potentially being the rationale behind it reads a bit too much as management possessing a defeatist attitude towards it all.

Source? It just sounds like you trust random Twitter posts too much.

Way unreliable rumour on twitter but apparently the leafs are into Pavel Buchnevich.

Apparently this was a Chris Cuthbert and Jeff Marek discussion. I'm assuming this is a radio or podcast discussion. I picked it up on twitter.

Ah ok, I hope not. They have wasted too many prime years. If they make no splash and hit another exit, I'm done if Keefe is back next year.

That aside, I hope they grab Schenn. Good fit and a great story.

Buch is available? f*** I wanted him two years ago when the Rangers traded him. What a steal of a trade

To St.Louis-

I do like Engvall, brings a nice element of size and speed. He has just been a bit too vanilla this season, not imposing himself as much as we saw last season.

I think if the Leafs can get Henrique (for Kerfoot +) and Barbashev, that would address some weaknesses:

Bunting-Matthews-Nylander
Jarnkrok-Tavares-Nylander
McMann-Henrique-Barbashev
Holmberg-Kampf-Engvall
ZAR
Knies
Your third line v this, or anything we can cobble together...yes please!

Lines at Saturday's practice:

Bunting - Tavares - Marner
Jarnkrok - Kerfoot - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - Anderson
Aston-Reese - Holmberg - Simmonds
McMann

Boston still with the same goalie who was probably the worst goalie who started his series last season... just have to see the same ulmark in playoff and boston road will be pretty short.

The fact everything going so well right now doesn't mean for me they are a better team than tampa or toronto...

The Blues are in an interesting position. They could essentially sell everyone off for a huge load of assets yet they already have a nice foundation with Thomas, Kyrou, Neighbours and eventually Bolduc and Snuggerud. And to think at one point they had Tage Thompson. I feel like they are always good at picking up an impact forward in the mid-late in the first round. Oshie, Berglund, Perron, Schwartz, Tank, Fabbri, Barbashev (early 2nd) Thompson, Kyrou (early 2nd), Thomas, Neighbours, Bolduc, Snuggerud. They have been in contention for a long time and rarely trade their 1st, they only do it every few years. Those things come in handy.

"Apparently" and "I saw it on twitter" will not cut it, sorry

Keep Engvall + Niemala.

Nylander - Matthews - Buchnevich
Bunting - Tavares - Marner
Jarnkrok - RoR - Engvall
Holmberg - Kampf - McMann/ZAR

Sounds very nice.

I think Timo Meier is the asset to get. Whatever the cost is, should be able to recoup 1/2 or 2/3 in the off-season because of his rfa status. See if we can get nick bonino thrown in as well. Alternatively if you can re-sign meier for less than what nylander will be looking for, you trade him instead.

This team absolutely needs to get tougher to play against. Engvall and Kerfoot are perfect areas to re-distribute their cap for tougher to play against players.

Holl too on the backend. Sure, he's looked serviceable but the team needs some more grit on the backend. Grit that can play hockey.

Sportnet did a great article about hol

-Holl still the d who played the most on 1 of best defensive team in NHL
-no body started most defensive faceoff
-only brodie played a tougher matchup than hol
-lead team with pk min with one lower ( if not lower) pp goal against/60
-was 31 th in the NHL( jan 5) for D-zone denial
-he’s was 11th in the NHL in denials that are immediately followed by a zone exit
-Holl is seventh in the league among D in “exit success on under-pressure dump-in recoveries,” in a clump of names between Jaccob Slavin and Drew Doughty.

I dont know what you really expecting more for a 2M dman
