Is Dylan Strome worth a look. Last year saw him playing with Patrick Kane and dropping 22 goals and 48 points. Daily Face-off has him playing first line C for the Caps. 3.5 mill cap hit and 5/13/18 points this year. Washington is currently sitting 6th for a wild card spot, with the need of climbing over, amongst others: Pittsburgh, Florida and Rangers to grab the final spot. They are an old team.
Would the Leafs willingly part with Kerfoot, same cap hit, plus ???. Would Strome help the team as a 3C, or a LW with Tavares and Marner?

Kid's from Mississauga, but didn't play for the Soo.

Not the biggest fan of him. His skating is poor, he's not good at faceoffs, his consistency has always been questioned, and he's never been very good defensively. He needs strong offensive players for him to produce. He has SIX hits in 24 games... and you think people go nuts over Engvall's size and lack of hitting. Half of his points are on the PP, and assists at that.

Honestly, rather have Kaerfoot.... (if you saw it, you saw it)

Who cares ... hes barely a 40 point player NOW.. he was on a massive pdo heater to start the year but hes shown for a while that hes trending way down.
U want to pay him 4 mil to be a 25 point player on the 3rd line , and give up high tier assets to get him ?? Good thing ur not the gm

A 40 point player, is an ELITE #3C. 30-40 points going forward, given his other qualities, faceoffs, defensively strong, if you can sign someone like that... at a price BELOW $4 mil.... yes, I said below... you have an excellent C group, along with JT, AM and DK, the best in the NHL arguably.

Yes, he's trending down... as expected... his pay, would be trending down, as expected.

But you claimed he was an over the hill, vet, like ones we've had before... I guess like Spezza (who was amazing for his $), and Thornton (who wasn't amazing). Both of those guys were much further down the road, though I'd do the Spezza deal again for someone of his quality. Toews is still capable of 30-40 points in such usage...

How exactly do you think we would find "we need talent that can generate some semblence of offense" such a player?

Honestly, I don't think he costs "high tier assets" either. He's been a good hawks player, and he probably has a choice where he wants to go, and they will be doing him a favour to find a good home.

Kane on the other hand... that's going to cost you premium high tier assets.

and your choice to acquire a 3C is?

What do you think it would take to acquire Toews? Mind you, Chicago will probably only move Toews wherever he wants to go out of respect.

He's got a full NMC, so he's in charge of the process anyway. It wouldn't shock me to see him moved for a 2nd, or 3rd, or similar prospect. It feels like, you've done good for us, we'll do good for you type of thing.

If that’s the cost, I’d 100% add him. I’d even be willing to sign him to say a 3 year deal at a lower AAV.

Yeah, I agree. I think he'd be a terrific fit depending on acquisition cost and the possibility of an extension, but I bet he retires a Chicago Blackhawk. I think he'd have to actually want out for one reason or another. Maybe Kane getting traded would be a catalyst?

In an interview with The Athletic, Toews said this about the rebuild, "At the end of the day, we’re talking about a five-plus-year process, according to Kyle. So that part of it doesn’t sound appealing to me at all. I can’t speak for Kaner, but I definitely feel that the amount of turnover our team has gone through every single year these last three or four years, that’s where it gets really, really draining. And exhausting.

Towes is a risky locker room add imo, on-ice performance aside. Seems like he really needs to be catered to as "the guy", I don't know if that type of personality works when he's #6 on the totem pole especially after the Beach disgrace. Not sure you want him screaming at Matthews to eat vegan food in his ayahuasca tent a month before the playoffs.

Interesting, good to see he's still got a competitive spirit. Thank you Mr. Hund.

I get that some people were completely burnt with the Foligno acquisition, but Toews is just on another level to me. It's very possible that he isn't as good as expected, there's always that chance, but his underlying numbers are vastly superior to where Foligno was.

My only concern will be the price to acquire, especially with 50% retention. A lot of teams are going to want him I think. So it's going to be hard. But maybe Tavares can talk to Toews under the table and force Chicago a bit... maybe... probably not.

Either way, I'd rather take a shot at getting a ton end addition rather than an average one... but since we're cursed, we're doomed no matter what.

Noting as per above, that his salary is actually very small... so the retention in real dollars wouldn't be very high. It's just the Salary Cap accounting $ that is high. Toews salary is $2.9 mil this year... so real salary retained, at the deadline would be ~$300k....

It's more that it ups the value of the player regardless of the amount of money. Maybe the real dollars changes things up a bit but I think any time you retain a good chunk of money, the value goes up.

I'm starting to think an upgrade upon Kerfoot and Holmberg (shift to wing) - is better than trying to force an expensive top4 D trade that may not work. (But this mentality is only happening due to the current solid play of team defense and goaltending...with injured players)

Bunting-Matthews-Nylander
_______-Tavares-Marner
Holmberg-_____-Jarnkrok
Zar-Kampf-Engvall

Rielly-Liljgren
Sandin-Brodie
Giordano-Holl

Murray
Samsonov

Is solid.

Notes:
-Knies/Robertson might fit the bill within top9.
-Find a 3C warrior or 1LW beast.

we need a top 6 winger bad, especially in the playoffs when the hockey is tighter.

Winning streak really changes things doesn't it?

Top 5 team in the league right now.

Let's see if they're a top 5 team in the playoffs!
You need to be successful in the regular season to make the playoffs.

Success in previous regular season doesn't guarantee them a playoff spot this year. They've failed in the playoffs in years past (last year v Tampa had a few interesting calls go against them) but discounting how well they are playing right now with 3 of their top 4 D out because of what has happened in years past is kind of dumb.

The type of defender Chychrun is (high end young top 4 dman with term and a bargain cap hit), I would imagine he is still the Plan A as far as non-rentals go.

If the Leafs were to go the rental route on D, Nick Jensen would be a really good fit (similar type usage to Holl, but is way better) if Washington doesn't turn their season around and sells their upcoming UFAs.

According to CJ we’re not really interested

If Washington continues to struggle, Martha is an intriguing name.

Conor Sheary could be a cheap option too if big names are too pricey.

No leafs dont need soft player
Hes the last type of player we need.. we already tried the over the hill overpayment for a "vet presence"... we need talent that can generate some semblence of offense
Especially on a rental

Sorry but Toews is exactly the type of player need is exactly type of player leafs need.

Guy who can bring depht scoring, physical game, can play every kind of situation in every kind of situation, can step up if someone is injured. Kind of player who can have a huge role during key moment.

- Leafs dont need top 6 skilled foward, they already paying 40M to get it done...

- i dont think they need defencemen with how they play defensivly right now and since 3 year..

They need exactly everything toews bring to a team right now. Depht all around physical foward who will never be affraid to rush the net and pay the price in front the net...

Hayton would be a nice add for sure. I've been hoping for him since before last season started as our 3rd C. I'm higher on Crouse and Chychrun than most but I've watched probably 75% of their games over the last 3+ years. I see a lot of the intangibles that don't show up on stat sheets. Chychrun is better defensively than a lot give him credit for. And tougher too. He hits, clears the crease area and even fights when needed. Crouse has the speed, physicality and the scoring touch to be in the top 6 but probably better suited for the 3rd. The cost to acquire either or both wouldn't be worth it though.
To get both we would have to gut our system.

Any player we target that requires a first + must be able to be extended at a decent cap hit. Meier would be my target but he would cost us knies plus and he would have to take less then his 10 mill QO long term.
