Honestly, Topi alone would be a gross and stupid over-pay.

I know that's not what you are saying at all, but even with a minimal cost to bring in, how much retention is Chicago going to make? Our cap space is tight and bringing in Kane takes away from our pool to bring in someone else as well.

Sorry, I'm just not on it at all, unless Dubas can do some serious wheeling and dealing to bring in other pieces that can be counted on more and fit our long-term, which is what his priority appears to be as well.

Full retention (50%) by Chicago. Won't even be a contention point. Cap room won't matter to them, and since Kane's base salary this season is only 3 mil, and two-thirds of it would have already been paid, you're talking about Chicago being on the hook for only 500k in real dollars with full retention. 500k means nothing to an NHL team (other than Arizona maybe).

That's a fair point, but Kane's cap hit would fit into Muzzin's LTIR and if we're bringing in another expensive forward, then we can ship out Engvall/Kerfoot. But to your point about depth, what if we try:

Bunts-Matthews-Kane
Jarn-JT-Marner
Knies-Nylander-Kerfoot
Holm/Zar-Kampf-Engvall

Wouldn't that give us 3 dangerous two-way lines and a 4th line that is excellent defensively and can give us 5-10 minutes of time in a defensive deployment?
That's almost what I have it as well. The fourth-line is upgraded by the fact it plays less and Holmberg is potentially added to that line. I wouldn't trade for an upgrade because there is no addition that significantly impacts the fourth-line because that line probably gets less than 10 minutes a night.

Bunting - Matthews - Kane
Jarnkrok - JT - Marner
Knies/Bertuzzi/Barbashev - Kerfoot - Nylander
Holmberg/ZAR - Kampf - Engvall

Kane would have to be retained likely by a 3rd team as well.

D is where it gets interesting because I kinda expect McCabe to come over as well in a blockbuster.

Chicago is so weird. I get the need to rebuild but if you have guys like Dach, Hagel and DeBrincat it seems like you already have a decent amount in place.

Baffling decision-making by them. Tanking for Bedard makes all the sense in the world, but why would you try to accomplish that by trading your good young players while hanging on to Kane, Toews and Jones. Completely backwards thinking.

Yeah exactly. They should tank with Dach, DeBrincat and Hagel.

His cap hit is enormous, even at 50% retention it's going to seriously effect other potential moves, that's also a cost

We should be trying to make our bottom 6 deeper so we shouldn't be throwing forwards overboard for cap reasons, we should be trying to add and keep the guys we already have

Engvall can play on a shutdown line and Kerfoot can score a bit, that's still useful when the teams being put together

Get a 3rd team to keep 25% would cost a 5th, at worst a 4th pick...

This is so ugly.

The man is making more money in one year than anyone else would in a lifetime.

Losing? Tough shit. Give the money back or do your damn job.

This is just a pitiful lack of give a crap displayed here and we don’t need it.
Why that is so concerning to me, he’s being watched by a team that supposedly wants him, and that’s the effort he shows? Huge red flag for me, I mean the guy is a H of F stud, but when it goes it goes. Pang this week was quite blunt, saying “there’s nothing left in the tank”. I’m starting to feel red flag on this addition.

This nails it for me too.

Can't even bother to show up against the team you are supposedly trying to impress?

Its only good for fans... leafs staff doesn't need to play against hawks to see kane playing, they probably already watched all kane game on tape.. right now the reality every team already know everything they need to know about player they want and its not 1 game or bad game who will change anything

Interesting reading Chicago's board, they're only expecting to get a 2nd back for Mccabe and a 2nd or 3rd for Lafferty. If their valuation is correct, we might be able to solve all of our needs with a single trade: Laff/Mccabe/Kane for a 1st+2nd. With double retention on Kane and Engvall going the other way, I think the cap works. Sandin won't be happy, but what can you do.

Leafs could package Sandin for another asset. Like Chychrun or Meier.

I can't figure out why I am so anxious and impatient for this years trade deadline.

Possibly it's just the want for the regular season to end and the playoffs to begin

Absolutely not, why do scouts show up at games then? It’s absolutely instructive.

They watch player in live, they watch player in video more than anyone of us... they didn't wait a month before trade deadline to see player they are interest...in particular biggest name on the market... at this time of the year, team are ready for TDL

Team scouting all year long not just come TDL and when they scout a game, they dont scout only 1 player at time

Then why are the scouts even there? It matters and I’d be concerned that he showed zero jam auditioning for a team interested.

What is Kane really going to show that anyone who has watched him play for the past 10 years not already know?

The only due dilligence the Leafs would need to do is get a doctor involved to solve the rumours of the hip issue.

Trade offer rumor...If true really huge

Bouchard, bourgault 1st pick and 2 cap dump (including barrie)
Vs
Karlsson retained

Acquiring Bouchard and a 1st round draft pick apart of the deal for Karlsson would be a good win for San Jose IMO

I wonder if the Leafs are open to dealing Sandin for a young center and then putting their focus on someone like McCabe for the blueline. Someone like Pinto would be interesting in a deal involving Sandin.
